Saint Mary's slides by Oles in final minutes

The St. Olaf Women?s Basketball team lost to MIAC-opponent Saint Mary?s University on Saturday, as the Cardinals scored the games last six points and defeated the Oles 61-56 at Skoglund Athletic Center. The Oles led by as much as eight points in the second half and were up 56-55 with 1:20 left in the game.

Kristy Larson (So, St. Ansgar, Minn.) played well for the Oles inside with a season-high 13 points and collected eight rebounds. Sara Erickson (Sr, Cambridge, Minn.) added 11 points and Mayme Cupkie (Sr, Owatonna, Minn.) six rebounds in the loss.

Saint Mary?s went on a 14-6 run at the end of the first half to lead 26-22 at the halftime break. The Oles started out the second half on a 13-3 run, and led 37-29 with 12:30 remaining in the game. There were a total of 18 lead changes in the contest. The Cardinals out-rebounded the Oles 38-36, and had one more turnover. Both teams shot 44 percent from the field in the second half, but the Oles shot 32.3 percent from the field in the first half compared with the Cardinal?s 40.7.

St. Olaf travels to St. Peter on Wednesday, January 29 to play Gustavus Adolphus College at 7:30 p.m.
