Emily Uzzell
January 27, 2003

Records were set as the St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team hosted the first meet in Tostrud Center Friday, Jan. 24.The triangular with Carleton, Hamline, and St. Olaf allowed many to walk away holding a Tostrud record. The Oles dominated the meet, with 168 points. Carleton had 98 and Hamline 71. Senior Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) provisionally qualified for nationals in both the 800-meter race and the 1500-meter race. Teammate Emily Uzzell (Sr., Norfolk, Neb.) also broke the school record in the 20 lb. weight throw.

In the field events, Uzzell led the throws as was third in the weight throw and second in the shotput. First-year thrower Mary Schmidt (St. Louis, Mo.) finished in 5th in the shotput. Elizabeth Ghandour (FY, Madelia, Minn.) and Marla Nelson both placed in the pole vault, finishing 3rd and 5th respectively. Nelson also placed first in the triple jump with teammate Ida Jensen (FY, Fort Calhoun, Nebr.) finishing second. In the jumps, Caitlin Groh (FY, Waseca, Minn.) and Leah Dvorak (Sr., Elma, Iowa) worked with each other. Groh finished first in long jump with Dvorak second. In high jump, Dvorak finished third and Groh placed sixth. Look for this pair to remain constant with one another.

The track events were just as exciting as the field events. Melissa Botzet (So., Fairmont, Minn.) lead the young sprinting squad as she finished 2cd in the 55-meter dash and first in the 200-meter dash, while also running in the 4x400. First-year Emily Peterson (FY, Wilmette, Ill.) lead the hurdles wher she finished 5th in both the 55- prelims and the finals. Kari Koos (FY, Leavenworth, Wash.) finished first in the 400-meter with teammate Becca Trombley (FY, Eau Claire, Wis.) finishing second. Koos also took first in the 1,000-meter race. Larissa Nordstrom (FY, West Des Moines, Iowa) finished first in the 600-meter race with Jenna Barke (FY, Roseville, Minn.) finishing 3rd. Daymont's finish in both the 800 and 1500 meter races also set a pace for fieldhouse records. In the 5K, Lindsay Boetcher (FY, Eau Claire, Wis.) took first place and set the pace for the other Oles.

The Oles also took first in all three relay events. The 4x200 team of Ghandour, Botzet, Nelson, and Kaitlin Cutter (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn.) finished first. In the DMR, the all first-year team of Sarah Estill, Barke, Nordstrom, and Boetcher finished first. While the 4x400 team of Trombley, Daymont, Ostrowski, and Koos took the baton across the line first.

The Oles will rest this weekend, but will return to action on Saturday, February 8th when they will travel to the co-ed Saint Mary's Invitational. Watch for the Oles to continue to improve on these performances and qualify even more individuals for conference and nationals.
