Oles open at MSU Invite

The St. Olaf men's track team may very well have been able to see a glimpse into the future while competing in the MSU Alumni Open. A number of surprising performances were turned out by numerous first-year students along side their veteran comrades.

Top-notch performances from first-years in the sprints from Tom Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) ran 54.74 in the 400 meters, Dane Hamann, (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) posted a 1.08.95 in the 500 meters.

Sam Hauck (FY, Shoreview, Minn/Concordia Academy) opened his collegiate career with a 4.27.34 in the mile run. Jesse Horst (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South) posted a 2.39.39 in the 1,000-meters and Jason Havey (FY, Colombia, Mo./Hickman) rounded out the young distance performances with a 15.55 in the 5,000 meters.

In the field events the Oles displayed their wealth of strength and depth in both the shot put and the weight throw. Marcus Hanson (Sr. Billings, Mont.) placed 3rd in the shot put with a put of 46 feet 9 inches, while Pete Cathcart (FY, Lakeville, Minn.) posted 44ft and ¾ of an inch in the shot. Justin Patrignani (FY, East Amherst, N.Y./Clarence) put just over 40 ft and threw 27 ft and 9 inches. In addition another First-year Bryan Anderson (Grants Pass, Ore./Hidden Valley) put 34 ft, 4 inches and threw 33ft, 8 inches. Rounding out the weight throwers was Bjorn Sjue (Sr, Oslo, Norway/Limderud) with a toss of 38ft 7 and ½ inches. Evan Sundquist (So. White Bear Lake, Minn.) produced some impressive numbers in the Long Jump 6.11meters and Triple Jump 12.34 meters. In the pole vault John Gensmer (Sr. North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) cleared 13 feet and a quarter inch.

Rounding out the meet with the events on the track were Ryan Noreen (Sr. Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson), Chad Thomas (Sr. Menomonie, Wis) and Matt Johnson, Richfield, Minn.). Noreen ran a 1.06.99 in the 500 meters while Thomas posted a 7.36 in the 60 meters and Johnson ran a 23.75 in the 400-meter dash.

Distance standout performances were posted by veterans Rob Hillard (Sr. Colombia, Mo./Hickman) with a 2.33.64 in the 1,000-meter. Malcolm Richards, So. Minneapolis, Minn./South) in the 3,000 meters posting a 9.02.63. Rounding out the distance crew was Kelly Fulton (So. Billings, Mont.) who ran an excellent 5,000 meters in 15.21.92.

The Oles will spend the week gearing up for the first home meet in the new Tostrud Center. The meet will be their standard triangular with Hamline University and Carleton College. The meet begins at 12:45 with running events starting at 1:45.
