Oles open home triangular with a win

The St. Olaf men hosted their traditional early season triangular with Hamline University and Carleton College, the first men's indoor meet hosted in the Tostrud Center. In front of a large crowd of alumni, the Oles posted many great performances and set fieldhouse records. The Oles won the meet with 147 points, Carleton scored 87 and Hamline scored 69.

Mark Sullivan (Sr., West Bend, Wis./West) ran himself into the record books as the second fastest Ole of all time in the 3000 meters with a time of 8.44.26. Evan Sundquist (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) won three events and in doing so set fieldhouse records in all of them. Sundquist jumped 19' 6 ¾" in the Long Jump, 41 feet, seven and ¼ inches in the Triple Jump and 6 feet in the High Jump as well as placing 3rd in the 55 meter high hurdles. Dan Grindstaff (So., Eden Prarie, Minn.) won the 55 meter high hurdles in 8.76 and out leaned teammate Dane Hamann (FY, Flossmoor, Ill/Homewood-Flossmoor) in the 600 yards with a time of 1.17.23 to also earn two fieldhouse records. The Shot Put was won by Peter Cathcart (FY., Lakeville, Minn.) with a put of 43 feet, 11 and ¼ inches. Rounding out the field events John Gensmer (Sr., North Oaks, Minn./Mound View) vaulted 13 feet 10 inches, to earn MIAC Male Field Athlete of the Week honors.

Additional top performances on the track included, Chad Thomas (Sr., Menomonie, Wis.) running 6.79 to win the 55 meter dash, Jesse Horst (FY, Minneapolis, Minn/South) winning the 800 meters in 2.00.20, and Sam Hauck (FY, Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) placing second in 1000 meters with an outstanding time of 2.33.96. Despite winning the meet the Oles are looking to improve as the season progresses.

Next up for the Ole Men is the Carleton Invitational, On Friday, January 31st. The meet begins at 6:30 p.m. with field events, followed shortly with the running events at 6:45 p.m. in the Carleton Recreation Center.
