Women's hoops three points from upset

The St. Olaf women's basketball team nearly rallied from a 13-point deficit, but lost to second-place Gustavus Adolphus College 62-59 on Wednesday, January 29 in St. Peter, Minn. The Oles shot 51.7 percent in the second half.

With ten minutes left to play, the Oles went on a 12-0 run to trail the Gusties 53-52 with five minutes and 23 seconds on the clock. The Oles again found themselves down by one point and possession of the ball with 12 seconds remaining in the game. A missed shot and two made free throws gave the Gusties a three-point win. Sara Erickson (Sr, Cambridge, Minn.) was high scorer for the Oles with 20 points, going 3-of-4 from the three point line in the second half. The Oles shot 83.3 percent from three after the break. Liz Mundahl (Sr, Eagan, Minn.) added 11 points, while Jill Johnson (Jr, Butterfield, Minn.) had eight.

St. Olaf was also able to effectively shut down Gustavus?s talented inside game with solid defense, but Gustie guard Angie Peterson was 4-of-7 from the three point line and scored 22 points to keep their offense going.

As a team, the Oles shot 49 percent from the field, while Gustavus shot 45.1 percent. Kristy Larson (So, St. Ansgar, Iowa) led the Oles in rebounds with seven, and Kelly Sweeney (Jr, Oakdale, Minn.) added five. The Oles out-rebounded the Gusties 31-27.

The Oles next play Carleton College, who is currently undefeated at Carleton's West Gymnasium on Saturday, February 1. Game time is 1:00pm. The men?s game is at 3:00pm.
