On Friday, January 25, the Oles hosted the Gusties from Gustavus Adolphus College. The Oles set the pace early in the game with a goal at 1:53 in the first period. Erin Baxter (So, Rosemount, Minn.) scored for the Oles with the assist from Jennifer Welch (Fr, Bloomington, Minn.). Gustavus answered back at 12:49 of the first to even the score.

The second period proved to be one filled with tough defense for the Oles. The Gusties put 9 shots on goal compared to the Oles 3. However, excellent defensive play by Lindsay Weier (Fr, Menomonie, Wis.), Melissa Mueller (Fr, Lakeville, Minn.), and goaltender Kerry Rollwagen (So, Mendota Heights, Minn.) kept the Gusties from taking a lead in the second period. The second period was scoreless for both the Oles and the Gusties.

The Oles offense came alive in the third period. The Oles had a total of 11 shots for the period. However, Gustavus also had offensive success when they scored at 6:33 in the third to take the lead 2-1. The Oles stepped up their play and answered back at 12:33. Britny Schultheis (So, Shoreview, Minn.) scored for the Oles with the assists from Baxter and Weier.

Schultheis? tying goal sent the game into overtime where the Oles dominated the play. However, the five-minute overtime period expired before the Oles could put the puck in the net. The game ended in a tie, 2-2. The Oles had a total of 29 shots on goal and Rollwagen had a total of 25 saves. Both Schultheis and Welch had excellent games.

The Oles will play the Gusties again on Saturday, January 26 at 2pm at Gustavus Adolphus College.
