National Public Radio to feature St. Olaf Choir on 'Pipe Dreams'

Elizabeth Child
July 6, 2003

National Public Radio will air the St. Olaf Choir's recording of "The Celestial Country," composed by Charles Ives, on Saturday, July 6, at 9 p.m. (Central Daylight Time) as part of "Pipe Dreams." The contata reflects Ives' early romantic style and is uniquely American in its optimism and eclecticism. Program host Michael Barone will contrast the music of Ives and the composer's Yale University professor Horatio Parker, both of whom shaped the American music tradition at the turn of the 20th century. If you miss the NPR broadcast, you can hear it online at Minnesota Public Radio; it is "Pipedreams" program No. 0326.

The St. Olaf Choir's rendition of "The Celestial Country" is featured on a CD of the same name released earlier this year on the London-based Linn Records label. On the CD, the St. Olaf Choir also sings "Silence Unaccompanied," a song cycle created from Ives works. The CD will be available domestically in August from St. Olaf Records. Call 888-232-6523.
