Viola da Gamba conclave features a week of music, concerts
JULY 31, 2003 — "The Viol is My Delight" is the theme of the 41st Viola da Gamba Society of America (VdGSA) conclave occurring this week at St. Olaf. The conclave, which concludes Aug. 3, is hosting more than 100 musicians and offers programs for beginners and veterans who play the viola da gamba, or viol. The instrument first appeared in the late 15th century and was one of the most popular instruments in Renaissance and Baroque music. A variety of concerts featuring guest musicians, free and open to the public, will be offered throughout the week. Soprano Judith Nelson performs today in Urness Recital Hall at 4 p.m., followed by Julie Elhard and Erica Rubis at 5 p.m., also in Urness Recital Hall. On Saturday, Aug. 2, there will be an informal student concert at 7:15 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall.

Senior Mandy Erdmann is world champ in two lumberjack events
JULY 30, 2003 — The world's premier lumberjack event, held July 25-27 in Hayward, Wis., drew two competitors from St. Olaf College -- and both performed exceptionally well. Mandy Erdmann defended her world championship title in the boom run for the fifth straight year and excelled in other events.

Staruch, Hansen and Wee to perform in upcoming Minneapolis recital
JULY 27, 2003 — Classical 89.3 Top of the Day and Evening Song host Steve Staruch features prominently in the recital "Viva Viola," music for viola, clarinet and piano. Staruch, a violist who studied at Oberlin and the Eastman School of Music, will perform Mozart?s Kegelstatt-Trio (Trio in Eb for Piano, Clarinet and Viola) and Max Bruch?s Nachtgesang (from Acht Stücke) with Karen Hansen, clarinet, and Theo Wee, piano. Hansen is a freelance clarinetist and executive director of the Center for Lifelong Learning at St. Olaf. Theo Wee is professor of music, organ and piano at St. Olaf. The recital, free and open to the public, is today at 3 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 4801 France Avenue South in Edina.

'Sing For Joy,' produced by Classical 89.3, to present hymn festival in downtown Minneapolis
JULY 24, 2003 — Every week, thousands of listeners across the country tune into the radio program "Sing For Joy," which St. Olaf College produces and distributes nationally through its public radio service, Classical 89.3 WCAL. For the first time, on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, "Sing For Joy" invites the public to participate in its program by attending "Home, Harvest & Healing: A Sing For Joy Hymn Festival," at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 215 S. Eighth St., in Minneapolis at 7:30 p.m.

St. Olaf to host 20th annual Hardanger fiddle celebration
JULY 23, 2003 — AmeriKappleik, the 20th anniversary gathering of the Hardanger Fiddle Association of America (HFAA), will take place July 23 to 27 on the campus of St. Olaf College. The five-day event will feature public concerts and dances, jam sessions and lectures related to the violin-like Hardanger fiddle, often called "the national instrument of Norway." Among the featured performers will be Andrea Een, an associate professor of music at St. Olaf and winner in 2002 of the prestigious St. Olav's Medal, bestowed by the king of Norway. President Thomforde to preach at evening service
JULY 17, 2003 — The public is invited to participate in the daily morning and evening worship services held during the Conference of Worship, Theology and the Arts (July 14-18). Worship is at 8:15 a.m. St. Olaf College President Rev. Dr. Christopher Thomforde, an ordained minister in the ELCA, will preach, and the Adult Women?s and Bell Choirs will perform. Evening worship at 8:30 p.m. features the Lutheran Book of Worship Evening Prayer, and the Treble and Handbell Choir will perform. Both services are in Boe Memorial Chapel.

St. Olaf students receive money for peace-justice study
JULY 15, 2003 — Four St. Olaf students will be studying about peace and justice in Russia, Mexico, Honduras, and Minnesota this summer with support from the Kloeck-Jenson Endowment for Peace and Justice.

Annual worship conference to emphasize finding God in daily life
JULY 14, 2003 — In the commonplace experience of our lives, God is made known to us, theologians believe. "Blessed is the Ordinary" is the theme of this year's week-long conference on worship, theology and the arts, held every year at St. Olaf College. Extraordinary musicians, artists, scholars and theologians -- including John Yarrington, Richard Wallace, Alice Parker, Mary Lou (Mel) Bringle, John Ferguson, Philip Quanbeck, Jerry Evenrud and Kristen Kvam -- will use the ordinary moments and routines in our daily world to enrich and vitalize worship services for the "Ordinary Time" of the church year, to deepen theological insights and to inspire new eyes and ears for art and music. JULY 14, 2003 — The public is invited to participate in the daily morning and evening worship services held during the Conference of Worship, Theology and the Arts (July 14-18). The opening worship service is at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. Richard Wallace, professor at Luther Seminary and member of the Association for Theological Field Education and the ELCA-affiliated Conference of International Black Lutherans, preaching. Environmental studies major awarded Udall Scholarship
JULY 10, 2003 — St. Olaf student Megan Gregory (class of 2004) is one of 80 U.S. students to be awarded a Morris K. Udall Scholarship this year. Gregory, a biology/environmental studies major, is the first St. Olaf student to receive this award. The scholarship is for college sophomores or juniors in the current academic year ?who have outstanding potential and who study the environment and related fields." The scholarship includes a $5000 award and a trip to a conference of Udall Scholarship Award winners in Arizona this August. Gregory has previously been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship.

JULY 9, 2003 — The St. Olaf Department of Classics held annual competitions in Greek and Latin this past April, allowing students to test their facility with translation on sight.

Star runner Megan Daymont wins prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship
JULY 8, 2003 — Four-year letterwinner and recent St. Olaf College graduate Megan Daymont, among the most notable athletes St. Olaf has ever produced, is one of 29 women to be awarded a spring NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

Mandy Erdmann 04 to defend her world title in the ESPN Great Outdoor Games
JULY 8, 2003 — Mandy Erdmann ?04 just keeps rolling along. A four-time world champion and gold medalist in the women?s boom run (she set the boom run world record of 15.57 seconds), and second in the world in women?s professional log rolling, Mandy will defend her title in the annual ESPN Great Outdoor Games on Sunday, July 13. The women?s boom run event begins at 11 a.m. and can be seen on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC Sports. Mandy will also compete in the women?s log rolling event on Saturday, July 12 at 9:30 a.m. The Great Outdoor Games, in which top international athletes match up in 20 events across four sport disciplines, runs July 10 through 13.

During the school year Mandy, a La Crosse, Wis. native who has been competing since 1989, practices log rolling in the St. Olaf pool with freshman and fellow competitor Doug Goodmundson from Wayzata, Minn. Doug, who also will participate in the ESPN Great Outdoor Games, will compete in the men?s boom run on Sunday, July 13 at 8:30 a.m. Doug placed fifth in the 2002 Great Outdoor Games.

National Public Radio to feature St. Olaf Choir on 'Pipe Dreams'
JULY 6, 2003 — National Public Radio will air the St. Olaf Choir's recording of "The Celestial Country," composed by Charles Ives, on Saturday, July 6, at 9 p.m. (Central Daylight Time) as part of "Pipe Dreams." The contata reflects Ives' early romantic style and is uniquely American in its optimism and eclecticism. Program host Michael Barone will contrast the music of Ives and the composer's Yale University professor Horatio Parker, both of whom shaped the American music tradition at the turn of the 20th century. If you miss the NPR broadcast, you can hear it online at Minnesota Public Radio; it is "Pipedreams" program No. 0326.

The St. Olaf Choir's rendition of "The Celestial Country" is featured on a CD of the same name released earlier this year on the London-based Linn Records label. On the CD, the St. Olaf Choir also sings "Silence Unaccompanied," a song cycle created from Ives works. The CD will be available domestically in August from St. Olaf Records. Call 888-232-6523.


Megan Daymont earns NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
JULY 6, 2003 — St. Olaf graduate, Megan Daymont, ('03, Northfield, Minn.) has been selected by the NCAA as a winner of an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. The NCAA has awarded 58 postgraduate scholarships of $6,900 each to 29 men and 29 women who participated in spring sports, which included baseball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, rowing, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, outdoor track and field and women's water polo. Daymont is one of 58 student-athletes awarded this scholarship from across all three divisions, and the second St. Olaf student-athlete to earn this prestigious award in the past two months.

St. Olaf student and singer/songwriter Paul Christianson '05 will perform live on the Cities 97 (97.1 FM) ?Acoustic Sunrise? program Sunday, July 6. Christianson and his band had most recently performed alongside Smashmouth at Camp Jeep in Virginia.
