"The Viol is My Delight" is the theme of the 41st Viola da Gamba Society of America (VdGSA) conclave occurring this week at St. Olaf. The conclave, which concludes Aug. 3, is hosting more than 100 musicians and offers programs for beginners and veterans who play the viola da gamba, or viol. The instrument first appeared in the late 15th century and was one of the most popular instruments in Renaissance and Baroque music. A variety of concerts featuring guest musicians, free and open to the public, will be offered throughout the week. Soprano Judith Nelson performs today in Urness Recital Hall at 4 p.m., followed by Julie Elhard and Erica Rubis at 5 p.m., also in Urness Recital Hall. On Saturday, Aug. 2, there will be an informal student concert at 7:15 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall.
