St. Olaf graduate joins Foreign Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? United States Secretary of State Colin Powell recently swore in Briana L.M. Saunders (St. Olaf class of 2000) of Edina, Minn., as a junior officer in the United States Foreign Service. Briana was sworn in with the 112th A-Class Junior Officers at the Department of State. She will serve her first tour of duty in Mumbai, India.

Briana earned her bachelor?s degree from St. Olaf in economics, and her master's in international economic policy from American University, Washington, D.C. In a written statement, Briana said, "My reason for joining the Foreign Service is a desire to make a real impact, wake up every day to new challenges and to be involved in our nation's diplomacy during this critical time in history."

Junior Officers serve their first two-year tour in one of 162 countries where the United States has representation around the world.
