Golf pro, women's coach, St. Olaf graduate to coach men's golf as well
AUGUST 27, 2003 — St. Olaf College has named its women's golf coach and sports information director as coach for the men's golf program. Le Ann Finger, a 1985 alumna of the college, is also a tournament-winning golf professional who recently carded her second career hole-in-one.

'Sing for Joy' to sponsor hymn festival in downtown Minneapolis
AUGUST 24, 2003 — Every week, thousands of public radio listeners across the country tune in to "Sing for Joy" -- produced on the St. Olaf campus by Classical 89.3 WCAL -- to hear scripturally based music and related commentary. "Sing for Joy" host and St. Olaf Pastor Bruce Benson, along with organist and music director John Ferguson, will allow listeners to participate in a hymn fest Sunday, Aug. 24, that celebrates the program's true essence. The event, free and open to the public, will take place at 7:30 p.m. at St. Olaf Catholic Church in downtown Minneapolis. St. Olaf to host picnic for Northfield community
AUGUST 20, 2003 — Save the date! The College Relations division at St. Olaf College is hosting a community-wide picnic for Northfield residents on Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., featuring food catered by Bon Appetit and the toe-tapping music of String Fever, a local bluegrass band. The "back to school" celebration is being coordinated by communications specialist David Gonnerman, who is reachable at 507-646-3015. Children and families are welcome. The College Relations division, headed by Vice President Jan McDaniel, includes the Center for Lifelong Learning, Classical 89.3 WCAL and the offices of Church Relations, Marketing Communications and Music Organizations.

Wisconsin man turns to St. Olaf for expertise on Hardanger fiddle
AUGUST 15, 2003 — The national instrument of Norway, the Hardanger fiddle, is enjoying an unprecedented revival in the United States, particularly in the Upper Midwest. St. Olaf Professor of Music Andrea Een, who single-handedly made St. Olaf the only college or university in the country to offer Hardanger lessons, befriended a Wisconsin fiddle maker who has joined her in spreading the sweet Hardanger music.

Faculty member explores lives touched by cancer
AUGUST 13, 2003 — St. Olaf Assistant Professor of Dance Anthony Roberts is exploring issues surrounding cancer and how it affects lives through a project that will include multiple 15- to 30-second videotape clips of St. Olaf faculty and staff whose lives have been touched by cancer.

?In essence, I plan to explore through movement, text and video projection, issues surrounding the loss of my brother, Tom, who died of cancer in 2001,? says Roberts. This exploration will culminate in a work to be presented in April 2004, in the Dittmann Center at St. Olaf College. ?I intend for the project to be an educational vehicle, as well as an emotional journey,? he adds.

St. Olaf graduate joins Foreign Service
AUGUST 12, 2003 — WASHINGTON, D.C. ? United States Secretary of State Colin Powell recently swore in Briana L.M. Saunders (St. Olaf class of 2000) of Edina, Minn., as a junior officer in the United States Foreign Service. Briana was sworn in with the 112th A-Class Junior Officers at the Department of State. She will serve her first tour of duty in Mumbai, India.

Briana earned her bachelor?s degree from St. Olaf in economics, and her master's in international economic policy from American University, Washington, D.C. In a written statement, Briana said, "My reason for joining the Foreign Service is a desire to make a real impact, wake up every day to new challenges and to be involved in our nation's diplomacy during this critical time in history."

Junior Officers serve their first two-year tour in one of 162 countries where the United States has representation around the world.

St. Olaf baseball coach, former Ole athlete named athletics director
AUGUST 7, 2003 — St. Olaf baseball coach Matt McDonald has been named director of the college's athletics program, which includes more sports than any other MIAC school. An alumnus who lettered three years in football and four years in baseball, McDonald replaces Cindy Book, who served in the post for five years.

AUGUST 5, 2003 — Matt McDonald has been named the new athletic director at St. Olaf College. Cindy Book, who has held the position for the past five years, has decided to return to coaching as an assistant volleyball coach, and will remain the department chair of the Recreation, Physical Education and Athletics department.
