On April 28, 2003, the St. Olaf Department of Classics held its second annual competition for the Groton Endowed Academic Award in Greek, and its third annual competition for the Loomis Endowed Academic Award in Latin.

The eight students who participated in the Greek contest were asked to translate at sight a passage from Epictetus. The nine students in the Latin contest were asked to translate at sight a passage from Livy. Both contests had a one-hour time limit.

First place in Greek ($300) went to Hilary J. C. Lehmann ?04 (Mission Hill, S.D.). In second place ($200) was Marquis S. Berrey ?03 (Galesburg, Ill.), who graduated with distinction in classics one month later. Third place ($100) went to Julia L. Kelto ?04 (Williamsburg, Mich.). Honorable Mention went to Sarah L. Beaver ?03 (Poway, Calif.).

First place in Latin ($300) went to Christopher A. Schifani ?05 (Albuquerque, N.M.). Second place ($200) again went to Berrey. Third place ($100) went to Katharine A. Monson ?04 (Beresford, S.D.). Keeley Esterhay ?06 (Englewood, Colo.) received honorable mention.

The endowed award in ancient Greek was established by St. Olaf Department of Classics Chair Anne Groton. The endowed award in Latin was created by Kenneth and Kathleen Loomis and their son, Stephen Loomis ?97.
