Collage concert by St. Olaf Band to have guest conductor from Wales

by Sandra Gilderhus
October 9, 2004

The St. Olaf Band, conducted by Timothy Mahr, will present their annual Collage concert on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m., in Skoglund Center Auditorium as part of the Homecoming festivities. The featured guest conductor will be St. Olaf Band alumnus Bruce Perkins, leading the band in Philip Sparke's "invictus."

The program will also include works associated with former conductor of the St. Olaf Band Miles (Mity) Johnson, as a tribute to his legacy; a recent work "and in this dream there were eight windows" by St. Olaf Band conductor Timothy Mahr. This piece was premiered last October at Orchestra Hall. The program also includes an early work by F. Melius Christiansen, the founder of the music department and the St. Olaf Band. Christiansen's "First Norwegian Rhapsody," was written for, and performed during the band's tour to Norway in 1906. The concert is free and open to the public.
