Former baseball coach Jim Dimick named to Minnesota Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame
OCTOBER 31, 2004 — Former St. Olaf College baseball coach and Professor Emeritus Jim Dimick was part of the inaugural class of the Minnesota Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame inducted on Oct. 30 in Minneapolis. Dimick is one of two college coaches recognized along with 10 high school coaches.

Volunteer Network offers a Halloween party for area children
OCTOBER 28, 2004 — The Volunteer Network student organization at St. Olaf College is sponsoring a pre-Halloween party for pre-school and elementary-school-aged children from Northfield and surrounding communities. The party will take place in Ytterboe Hall from 4 to 6 p.m. with free parking in the Buntrock, Rand and Skoglund lots. Children should come in costume and bring along a bag for prizes. There will be activities such as pumpkin and face painting, cookie decorating, a limbo contest, "fishing" for prizes and of course, costume judging. After the party, children are invited to go trick or treating in the residence halls.

Peace and Justice sponsors special screening of "Unconstitutional: The War on Our Civil Liberties"
OCTOBER 28, 2004 — A special screening of a controversial new documentary "Unconstitutional: The War on Our Civil Liberties" from the director of "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism" and "Uncovered" will be shown in Buntrock Commons, Viking Theater at 7 p.m. This new documentary provides the facts and stories that illuminate the truth behind the USA Patriot Act and other Bush administration policies, with testimony from those affected by these changes. This 65-minute film is free and open to the public.

Professor of Religion John Barbour will give public reading from new book
OCTOBER 28, 2004 — John Barbour, professor of religion at St. Olaf College and author of "The Value of Solitude: The Ethics and Spirituality of Aloneness in Autobiography," is part of the Fall 2004 Meet the Authors Series. Paul Wellstone's greatest strength and his Achilles heel, writes St. Olaf Professor of Political Science Dan Hofrenning in an opinion piece in the Star Tribune. Anthony Roberts Reprises multimedia dance piece 'Swing a Club: Facing Cancer'
OCTOBER 28, 2004 — Swing a Club: Facing Cancer, a multimedia dance piece that brings to life themes of struggle, support and letting go, will be performed Nov. 4 through Nov. 6 in St. Olaf College's Dittmann Center, Wagner/Bundgaard Studio One. All performances, free and open to the public, begin at 7:30 p.m. Audience members are invited to stay for a post-performance discussion each evening to ask questions, make comments or share their stories and experiences with cancer.

Film star Leonardo DiCaprio to visit St. Olaf College
OCTOBER 27, 2004 — Leonardo DiCaprio, film star from "Titanic" "Catch Me if You Can" and the upcoming "The Aviator" will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Buntrock Commons, Black and Gold Ballroom. The movie star has been speaking at campuses across the country on the topic "Voting for the Environment." This event is free and open to the public.

OCTOBER 27, 2004 — The star of the film Titanic and the upcoming The Aviator, about the legendary Howard Hughes, will turn his attention to politics in a speech tonight at St. Olaf College. Movie star Leonardo DiCaprio has been speaking at campuses across the country on behalf of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry on the importance of students "voting for the environment."

OCTOBER 19, 2004 — Wendell Arneson, professor of art at St. Olaf College, will have a solo-show "Charting Time and Place" featuring 20-plus new paintings (or "what I did on my summer vacation") at the Groveland Gallery in Minneapolis (25 Groveland Terrace).

Norwegian tuba soloist, Oystein Baadsvik, to give recital at St. Olaf College
OCTOBER 19, 2004 — Oystein Baadsvik, one of the best tuba soloists in the world, will give a recital at St. Olaf College on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 8:15 p.m. in Christiansen Hall of Music, Urness Recital Hall. Jorgen Larsen, pianist, will join Baadsvik in this recital.

Baadsvik, of Norway, started playing the tuba at the age of 15 and began his international career with two prizes at the prestigious Concours International d' Execution Musicale (CIEM) in Geneva in 1991. He released his first CD shortly after that and in 2003 his latest CD "Tuba Carnival" for tuba and strings, was released. Baadsvik also composes music and conducts many of his own orchestral concerts. This recital is free and open to the public.


"Perpetua," to be first theater production of the year at St. Olaf

Julia Kasdorf to give bookreading at St. Olaf College
OCTOBER 15, 2004 — The Fall 2004 Author Series "Meet the Authors!" presents Juia Kasdorf, poet and writer of non-fiction, in a bookreading from "Eve's Striptease," on Friday, Oct. 15, 2 p.m., at St. Olaf College, Buntrock Commons, Viking Theater. Kasdorf is also author of "Sleeping Preacher."

Perpetua opens St. Olaf Theater fall season

OCTOBER 14, 2004 — The St. Olaf College Theater Department opened its fall season Oct. 13 with Perpetua, an original new work by playwright Vincent Delaney and directed by Karen Peterson Wilson, an associate professor of theater at St. Olaf. Performances run through Saturday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Haugen Theater, with 2 p.m. matinee performances on Saturday and on Sunday, Oct. 17.

St. Olaf Choir makes beautiful music with VocalEssence in Minneapolis
OCTOBER 13, 2004 — When the St. Olaf Choir combined forces with VocalEssence at Orchestra Hall, the result was a "glorious program," according to Star Tribune reviewer William Randall Beard. VocalEssence has strong St. Olaf connections. Director Philip Brunelle sits on the college's Board of Regents, Associate Director Sig Johnson conducts the Manitou Singers on campus and choir members include Director of Academic Research and Planning Jo Beld.

John Kilbride named to head advancement at St. Olaf
OCTOBER 13, 2004 — John Kilbride has been named vice president for advancement at St. Olaf College. A 1987 alumnus of the college, Kilbride will oversee alumni and parent relations, annual giving, planned giving, principal gifts and stewardship.

Fair Trade Coffee to be topic of lecture
OCTOBER 12, 2004 — Timothy and Andrea Bruns from European Roasterie, will speak in support of Fair Trade Coffee on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 8 p.m., in Buntrock Commons, Viking Theater. Fair trade means an equitable and fair partnership between consumers in North America and producers in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Rock the Vote Festival to be held at St. Olaf College
OCTOBER 11, 2004 — St. Olaf College's Buntrock Commons parking lot will be the site of the Rock the Vote Festival from noon to 5 p.m. The festival, promoting awareness and enthusiasm for the upcoming election, will include music by four bands, tents and activities. The public is welcome.

Longtime college football rivals to meet in second annual Cereal Bowl
OCTOBER 9, 2004 — One of the nationıs oldest rivalries in college football will continue Saturday, Oct. 9, when St. Olaf College and Carleton College compete in their annual contest. This yearıs event, during St. Olaf Homecoming, is the second annual Cereal Bowl, honoring of Malt-O-Meal Co. participation. The company, which has a plant in Northfield, will donate cereal to all attendees. The game will be played at St. Olaf on Manitou Field at 1 p.m. In addition to the Cereal Bowl, the game also features the induction of seven alumni into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Accessibility is child's play for alumna who creates local playground

Senate Higher Education Budget Division hearing to be held at St. Olaf
OCTOBER 5, 2004 — The public is encouraged to attend a Minnesota Senate Higher Education Budget Division hearing that will be held at St. Olaf College on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. The hearing will take place in the Buntrock Commons, Sun Ballroom and feature testimony from students and faculty members from Carleton and St. Olaf Colleges. Senate Higher Education Committee will hold budget hearing at St. Olaf
OCTOBER 5, 2004 — On Tuesday, Oct. 5, the Senate Higher Education Committee will begin a six-campus "listening tour" throughout Minnesota with a public hearing at St. Olaf College. Students and faculty from St. Olaf and neighboring Carleton College will testify at the event. The hearing begins at 2 p.m. in the Sun Ballroom of Buntrock Commons. Karen Solgard to present Norse fiddle concert at St. Olaf College
OCTOBER 3, 2004 — Karen Solgard will present a Norwegian Hardanger fiddle concert on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. in the Christiansen Hall of Music, Urness Recital Hall. In addition to playing the fiddle, Solgard will sing, tell stories and invites audience participation in her lively program. Free and open to the public.

Nursing student earns national scholarship
