Nordic Ski Completes Second Weekend of Points Race

Competing in their second weekend of the Central Collegiate Skiing Associations points race, the St. Olaf Nordic ski team returned home with a few of the teams' best individual results in recent history. Most notably, sophomore Jay Eidem's (Bloomington, Minn.) 5th place finish in Sunday's 15 kilometer skate race displayed the great improvement the team has gained in the past year. The other top performances came from the women's team in junior Sonja Bostrom's (St. Paul, Minn.) eighth place finish in Sunday's skate race, and junior Kevin Hochtl's (Vail, Co.) ninth place finish in Saturday's classical race.

Overall, both the men's and women?s teams had a successful weekend. Bostrom added an 11th place finish in the 5 kilometer classical event. Senior Margie Tilman (St. Louis Park, Minn.) was 15th in the classic race and 13th in the skate. Senior Dawn Youngren (Roseville, Minn.) posted 13th and 15th places, sophomore Hillary McCulloh (St. Cloud, Minn.) skied to finishes of 12th and 16th, and first-year Sarah Florell (Alexandria, Minn.) with 34th and 33rd place finishes.

Hochtl added a 15th place in the skate race on Sunday. His performances were followed by senior Fred Kueffer's (Shoreview, Minn.) 13th place classical race and 24th in the skating event.

Sophomore Alec Steward (Duluth, Minn.) was 21st and 22nd, while sophomore Nate Christopherson (St. Paul, Minn.) finished in 11th and 27th. First-year John Giese (Mora, Minn.) placed in 22nd and 31st, senior Brent Carlson (Stillwater, Minn.) was 27th and 29th, and sophomore Kevin Johnson (Wayzata, Minn.) placed 25th in the classical event.

This weekend the Oles travel to Marquette, Michigan to compete in the third weekend of the Central Collegiate Skiing Associations points race, where the team will continue their pursuit of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in March.
