Ole Womens Tennis Topples St. Benedict
FEBRUARY 28, 2001 — The St. Olaf women's tennis team returned to action on February 23rd to play another conference match at the College of St. Benedict.

Two St. Olaf College guest speakers to discuss Norwegian Resistance during WWII
FEBRUARY 28, 2001 — Famed Norwegian resistance leader Gunnar Sønsteby and historian Magne Skodvin will discuss "Norwegian Resistance Against the Nazis" on Tuesday, March 13, at St. Olaf College.

Oles Top Johnnies in Tennis
FEBRUARY 28, 2001 — Fresh off of their first win, and first match, the Oles took the court to play the St. John?s Johnnies in St. Cloud on February 23rd. The Oles looked to start the season off right by winning their first two conference matches.

St. Olaf Womens Tennis Shuts out Cobbers
FEBRUARY 27, 2001 — The St. Olaf women's tennis team traveled to Moorhead to play their first match of the season versus Concordia College on Saturday, February 17th. #1 singles Rebekah van Wieren won 6-1, 6-4, as did sophomore Jennifer Ison (Urbana, Ill.) winning 6-4, 6-4 at #2 singles.

Ole Mens Tennis Defeats Concordia 6-1
FEBRUARY 27, 2001 — The Oles only senior Pete Nau (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) played #1 singles and won 6- 4, 6-3, while junior Karl Wilbur (Edina, Minn.) won easily 6-2, 6-2 at #2.

Wrestlers Third in MIAC
FEBRUARY 27, 2001 — The St. Olaf wrestlers took third at the MIAC championships, held Saturday at St. John's University in Collegeville. The Oles were led by Alex Morf (So., Mt. Vernon, Iowa) who took second place and will represent the Oles at the national tournament March 3-4 in Waterloo, Iowa.

Ole Nordic Ski Teams Compete in CCSA
FEBRUARY 27, 2001 — This past weekend, the St. Olaf Nordic team competed in their last weekend of Central Collegiate Ski Association competition. These were the last NCAA Division I qualifying races for the men and women's teams, and both teams returned home with excellent results.

ST. Olaf Wins Quadrangular; Megan Daymont Breaks 21Year Old Indoor School Record
FEBRUARY 27, 2001 — The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field Team won the St. Ben's Quadrangular this past Saturday. The Oles scored 214 points, St. Ben's finished in second with 204 points. Most Oles had their season best performances in the final tune-up meet before the MIAC Championships hosted by St. John's this coming weekend.

Renowned Norwegian musicians Kraggerud, Kjekshus to perform at St. Olaf
FEBRUARY 26, 2001 — Internationally renowned Norwegian musicians Henning Kraggerud, violin, and Helge Kjekshus, piano, will perform an Artist Series concert at St. Olaf College on Sunday, March 4.

Internationally renowned St. Paul Chamber Orchestra to perform at St. Olaf College
FEBRUARY 26, 2001 — The internationally renowned St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Nicholas McGegan, will perform at St. Olaf College on Friday, March 2.

St. Olaf Mens Swimming MIAC Champions/Women Third
FEBRUARY 22, 2001 — The Carleton women and St. Olaf men took home top honors following the third and final day Saturday (Feb. 17) at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) swimming and diving championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

FEBRUARY 22, 2001 — Pianist Charles Kemper and violinist Kristin Kemper will present a faculty-guest recital Monday, Feb. 26, at St. Olaf College. The recital is part of a faculty artist series, "Gypsy Music in the Twentieth Century."

St. Olaf Men Lose at Buzzer to Carleton
FEBRUARY 19, 2001 — The St. Olaf College men?s basketball team ended its season in difficult fashion Saturday, losing by two to its cross-town nemesis Carleton College. The Oles led from the opening buzzer but suffered a scoring draught down the stretch, managing only seven points in the final 7:13. Carleton senior Jeff Jensen made a pair of free throws with three seconds left to give the Knights the win 79-77 and a season split with the Oles.

Nordic Ski Teams MIAC Champions
FEBRUARY 19, 2001 — The St. Olaf men's and women's Nordic teams returned home from their competition in Winona, Minnesota this past weekend as MIAC Champions. Both teams dominated Saturday and Sunday's races on the grueling courses of St. Mary's College. The team?s success is displayed by the two-team championships and four individual MIAC champions.

Ole Women Compete at UMN Parents Day Open
FEBRUARY 19, 2001 — The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team took part in the University of Minnesota Parents? Day Open this past Saturday. No team scores were kept, however the young Olaf team performed very well.

Ole Women Fall to Carleton in Season Finale
FEBRUARY 19, 2001 — The St. Olaf College women?s basketball team came up just short on Saturday, dropping its season finale 63-61 at cross-town rival Carleton College. Playing come-from-behind for most of the second half, the Oles brought the game within one with 49 seconds left, but Carleton was able to hold the Oles off until the final buzzer.

Oles Enjoy Big Win Over St. Kate's
FEBRUARY 15, 2001 — After a series of losses, the St. Olaf Women bounced back with a 24 point win over the College of St. Catherine 82-58. Playing everyone on the squad, the Oles had 13 players in the scoring column. The win puts St. Olaf at 8-12 in the MIAC and 10-13 overall.

Classical studies professor to discuss Greek satire, comedy in Feb. 22 lecture
FEBRUARY 15, 2001 — Ralph M. Rosen, professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania, will discuss "The Poetry of Mockery and Abuse in Ancient Greece" on Thursday, Feb. 22, at St. Olaf College.

St. Olaf faculty member Gia Someya-Nordmann dies in traffic accident Monday, Feb. 12
FEBRUARY 13, 2001 — Gia Someya-Nordmann, an instructor in Japanese at St. Olaf College, died Monday, Feb. 12, the result of an automobile accident near Northfield, Minn. She was 38.

Ole Alpine Win at Region
FEBRUARY 13, 2001 — The St. Olaf Alpine Ski Team furthered its quest for a national title by sweeping the Lake Superior Divisional Championships over the weekend. Despite bitter cold temperatures and icy snow conditions both the men and women's team captured first place by a large margin.

Women Skaters drop two to St. Kate's
FEBRUARY 13, 2001 — The Ole women dropped this week's series to St. Kate's despite some strong individual performances.

Oles Upset Augsburg
FEBRUARY 13, 2001 — (Minneapolis)- Kevin Jaunich (So., Delano, Minn.) had 20 points, 14 of which in the second half, to lead the Oles to a 93-78 win over Augsburg. The win completes a series sweep after St. Olaf won on January 15, 82-76 at Skoglund Athletic Center. Ryan Olson added all 17 of his points in the second half for St. Olaf, who had six players in double figures for the first time this season. The victory was the first at Augsburg for the Oles since the 1995-96 season.

Ole Swimmers Split with Carleton
FEBRUARY 13, 2001 — On Saturday, February 3, the St. Olaf Swimming and Diving team competed against their town rival Carleton College. The teams were very competitive, and had several great performances, in fact, the teams and spectators even witnessed pool records broken by both St. Olaf and Carleton participants. On the Women?s side, Carleton defeated the Oles with a final score of 157 to 124. For the men?s competition however, the tables were turned. The St. Olaf men defeated Carleton with a final score of 189 to 105.

Oles Lose Play-off Hopes in Loss to Auggies
FEBRUARY 13, 2001 — In its final home contest of the season, the St. Olaf College women?s basketball team dropped a close one to Augsburg College 58-56. In a game where neither team shot well, free throws became paramount in the second half. The Auggies made only 5 of 17 from the charity stripe after the break but the Oles had some problems as well. With 2.3 seconds left in the game and the Oles down by two, Elisa Hatlevig (Sr., Rushford, Minn.) stepped to the line for two free throws

FEBRUARY 13, 2001 — A highly respected veteran journalist who covers Congress and national politics for McClatchy Newspapers is taking part in St. Olaf College classes this week as a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow.

Women's Track Takes Second at Meeting of the Minds
FEBRUARY 13, 2001 — This past Saturday the St. Olaf Women's Track and Field Team took second place in the Meeting of the Minds hosted by Carleton College. Carleton won the meet with 189 points, the Oles had 182 points and Emory College (Atlanta) finished third with 171 points. The Oles also competed in the "Knowledge Bowl" as a scoring component of the competition.

Oles Fall in Final Home Game
FEBRUARY 12, 2001 — In the final men?s home game of the season, St. Olaf College lost a tough one to the University of St. Thomas 83-67. The Oles celebrated "Senior Day" before the game and those seniors led the team in stretches that put the outcome in question, but the favored Tommies were too much in the end.

FEBRUARY 12, 2001 — He?s narrated it many times before, but when writer and humorist Garrison Keillor presents "The Young Lutheran?s Guide to the Orchestra" at St. Olaf College Sunday, Feb. 25, it will be a very special event.

Oles Lose on the Road to Tommies
FEBRUARY 12, 2001 — The St. Olaf women?s basketball team fell 85-51 to St. Thomas in Saturday?s MIAC action. St. Thomas is tied for the lead at 15-2 heading into the final week of the regular season.

FEBRUARY 12, 2001 — St. Olaf College education faculty member and former Minneapolis teacher, counselor and school principal Larry Zimmerman was recognized as WCCO Radio?s "Good Neighbor" Feb. 7.

University of Michigan philosophy professor to present two Belgum lectures Feb. 22 at St. Olaf
FEBRUARY 9, 2001 — Stephen Darwall, John Dewey Collegiate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Michigan, will discuss "Two Dogmas of Empiricism in Ethics" during two Eunice Belgum Memorial Lectures at St. Olaf College on Thursday, Feb. 22.

Women Tracksters Compete at LaCrosse
FEBRUARY 8, 2001 — The Ole women placed 5th at the LaCrosse Invitational this past weekend. Sophomore sensation Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.), made a provisional qualifying mark in the 1500 M (4:44.13) with her second place finish. This early season performance is within one second of her best time from last year.

Johnnies Top Oles
FEBRUARY 8, 2001 — The red-hot St. John's Johnnies were too much for St. Olaf College tonight, beating the Oles 76-72 at Skoglund Center. St. John's, now riding a nine-game winning streak, jumped out to a 14-5 lead early in the game and looked to be in control.

Oles Fall to College of St. Benedict
FEBRUARY 8, 2001 — The St. Olaf women?s basketball team dropped an 80-46 contest in Wednesday?s MIAC action. With four games remaining, the Oles (7-10, 9-11) are still in the play-off picture and are currently tied with Augsburg in the seventh position.

Nordic Ski Completes Second Weekend of Points Race
FEBRUARY 8, 2001 — Competing in their second weekend of the Central Collegiate Skiing Associations points race, the St. Olaf Nordic ski team returned home with a few of the teams best individual results in recent history.

St. Olaf Choir to perform home concert Feb. 18, concluding 19-city winter tour of Midwest
FEBRUARY 7, 2001 — The St. Olaf Choir will wrap up a successful 8-state, 19-city winter tour with a "home" concert Sunday, Feb. 18, at St. Olaf College.

Ole Women Down Hamline 61-48
FEBRUARY 6, 2001 — The St. Olaf College women?s basketball team controlled the Hamline University Pipers from the tip-off, winning 61-48. The Oles shot well in the second half, but it was their domination on the boards that enabled them to maintain a comfortable lead.

St. Olaf Orchestra to conclude longest domestic tour with home concert Tuesday, Feb. 13
FEBRUARY 6, 2001 — After earning rave reviews from audiences and critics in nine states, the St. Olaf Orchestra will conclude its winter tour with a free, public "home" concert Tuesday, Feb. 13, at St. Olaf College.

Oles Roll Past Macalester
FEBRUARY 5, 2001 — Led by Elisa Hatlevig?s (Sr., Rushford, Minn.) 11 points, the Oles rolled past Macalester College 56-41. Kelly Sweeney (FY, Oakdale, Minn.) followed with seven. St. Olaf has won two out of their last three games and upped their record to 8-10 overall; 6-9 in the MIAC.

Oles Cant Break Losing Streak
FEBRUARY 5, 2001 — Shooting 62.7% from the field, the Cobbers were able to hold off the Oles who shot a respectable 56.1% to win 89-84. The loss puts the Oles at 3-10 In the MIAC and 5-12 overall. The Oles were lead by leading scorer Mike Ludwig (So., Blaine, Minn.) with 25 points.

Oles Give Concordia A Scare
FEBRUARY 5, 2001 — Even after a fantastic 57.7 field goal percent in the first half that put them up 40-30, the Oles weren?t able to hold off the Cobbers, losing 68-76, pushing their record to 7-10 overall and 5-9 in the MIAC. Concordia forced 25 turnovers, stealing the ball 16 times and had a crucial scoring run late in the second half to seal the victory.

Long-time St. Olaf voice teacher Lenore Schmidt dies
FEBRUARY 3, 2001 — Lenore Schmidt, who taught voice to hundreds of students during her 28 years as a St. Olaf College music faculty member, died Friday, Feb. 2, in Northfield Hospital. She was 90.

St. Olaf globalization conference to examine problems resulting from world 'homogenization'
FEBRUARY 2, 2001 — "Democracy and the New Economies" is the theme of St. Olaf College?s first annual Conference on Globalization and Social Responsibility Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16 and 17.

Oles Break Losing Streak
FEBRUARY 1, 2001 — Defeating Bethel College 58-48, the St. Olaf Women broke their 3-game losing streak, setting their record to 7-9 and 5-8 in the MIAC. Shooting only 30.6% from the field, the Oles were still able to manage a win with help again from their defense.

Royals Hold Off Oles
FEBRUARY 1, 2001 — Junior Eric Robertson (Andover, Minn) had 16 points and 12 rebounds in leading the Royals over St. Olaf 67-61. Mike Ludwig (So., Blaine, Minn.) led the Oles with 16 points while Tim Nelson added 14 points and eight rebounds.
