February 13, 2001

On Saturday, February 3, the St. Olaf Swimming and Diving team competed against their town rival Carleton College. The teams were very competitive, and had several great performances, in fact, the teams and spectators even witnessed pool records broken by both St. Olaf and Carleton participants. On the Women?s side, Carleton defeated the Oles with a final score of 157 to 124. For the men?s competition however, the tables were turned. The St. Olaf men defeated Carleton with a final score of 189 to 105.

The St. Olaf women?s and men?s medley relay teams contributed to a great start for the Oles. The Ole women?s 200 medley relay team of Chrissy Soule (SR, Mound, MN), Anna Guenther (SO, Minneapolis, MN), Emily Taylor (SR, Edina, MN) and Liz Hathaway (FR, Lincoln, NE) came into the wall 1st with a time of 1:55.66. For the Ole men, the 200 medley relay team of Jake Hvistendahl (FR, Minnetonka, MN), Eric Palmer (FR, Roseville, MN), Adam Garrett (FR, Cannon Falls, MN) and Bo Connelly (JR, Hutchinson, MN) won the race in a time of 1:40.19. The St. Olaf back and breaststrokers proved to be very competitive. On the women?s side Soule came in 1st in the 100 back with a time of 1:03.79 while teammate, Liz Hathaway, finished in a close 2nd with a time of 1:04.32. In the 100 breaststroke, the Ole women took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. Guenther came in 1st with a time of 1:10.82, Kate Nygaard (SO, Littleton, CO) came in 2nd with a season best time of 1:11.23, and Rachel Sattler (SO, Madison, WI) came in 3rd with a time of 1:11.53. On the men?s side Hvistendahl captured1st place honors in the 100 backstroke finishing with a time of 54.10. In the 100 breaststroke Eric Palmer came in 1st with a time of 1:04.16 and teammates Ryan Lussenden (JR, Morris, MN) and Chris Jacobsen (JR, St. Paul, MN) finished in 2nd and 3rd places respectively with times of 1:04.52 and 1:04.57. Next, in the 200 butterfly St. Olaf took 1st place finishes on both sides, once again. Sonia Karimi (SO, Rochester, MN) came in 1st for the women with a time of 2:19.17. For the men?s team, Pat Marzolf (FR, Maple Grove, MN) finished 1st with a time of 2:06.11, and teammate Adam Garrett was not far behind as he finished 2nd with a time of 2:06.45. Chrissy Soule pulled off a second 1st place finish for the Ole women in the 200 backstroke. Soule finished with a time of 2:16.43. Lussenden picked up a 1st place finish for the men in the 200 breaststroke by coming into the wall with a time of 2:19.97. Teammates Tom Dow (JR, Poway, CA), and Eric Palmer came in for the 2nd and 3rd place finishes. Dow finished in 2nd with a time of 2:20.29 and Palmer took 3rd with a time of 2:23.89. Adam Garrett swam his way to another great 1st place finish in the 100 butterfly. Garrett finished the event in a time of 53.47, and teammate Mark Lykins (SR, Nisswa, MN) came in 2nd with a time of 56.47. The St. Olaf Men?s 400 freestyle relay team of Thomsen, BJ Brent (SO, Ankeny, IA), Garrett, and Connelly captured the final win of the meet for the Oles by coming in 1st with a time of 3:17.67. Perhaps the biggest highlight of the meet for the Oles came from senior diver, Gabe Kortuem (Andover, MN). Gabe took first place honors on both the 1 meter and 3 meter boards. Kortuem broke the Carelton pool record and St. Olaf school record on the 1 meter board finishing with a score of 330.80. On the 3 meter board Kortuem?s final score was 299.25. Both of these scores also surpass the NCAA Division III qualifying standard for the national competition

The Oles next formal competition is the Conference meet where they will be competing against all of the teams in the MIAC conference. The meet will be held at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center on February 15, 16, and 17th. There will be a prelims session, which starts at 10:30, and a finals session, which starts at 7:00, each day. This is an exciting meet for all of the teams involved, and for the first time ever both the men and women will be competing together, instead of each gender competing on separate weekends.
