The St. Olaf College women?s basketball team came up just short on Saturday, dropping its season finale 63-61 at cross-town rival Carleton College. Playing come-from-behind for most of the second half, the Oles brought the game within one with 49 seconds left, but Carleton was able to hold the Oles off until the final buzzer. The win completes a season sweep of St. Olaf, the first in Carleton women?s basketball history.

Carleton led for most of the first half as it shot 50% to St. Olaf?s 28%. Timely baskets as well as good rebounding allowed the Oles to keep it close, rallying both times Carleton opened a big lead. Carleton took a five point advantage into halftime, leading 29-24.

The Knights widened their lead in the second half, seeing it climb to 11 at one point before St. Olaf began another rally. The Oles responded with a 9-1 run, putting the score at 49-46 and leaving them within striking distance for the rest of the game. Carleton?s free throw shooting made the difference down the stretch, as they made five of six in the last three minutes to complete the victory. St. Olaf shot 57% in the second half, and held the Knights to 39% shooting after the intermission.

Carleton?s Bridget Seegers led all scorers and rebounders with 15 and 8 respectively. Renee Willette added 14 for the Knights, followed by St. Olaf?s Lisa Eidenschink (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and Liz Mundahl (So., Eagan, Minn.) with 12. In the final game of her Ole career, Elisa Hatlevig (Rushford, Minn.), St. Olaf?s lone senior, scored 11 points on 5 of 10 shooting and grabbed 7 rebounds.

St. Olaf finishes the season eighth in the MIAC with an 8-13 record in the conference; 10-14 overall. Carleton will continue into the MIAC playoffs, where they won a tiebreaker with the College of St. Benedict to earn the second seed. The Knights end their regular season with an 18-3 MIAC record, 20-4 overall and will host a second round play-off game at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21 at West Gym.
