Ole Women Compete at UMN Parents Day Open

The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team took part in the University of Minnesota Parents? Day Open this past Saturday. No team scores were kept, however the young Olaf team performed very well.

Placing first for the Oles was sophomore Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) who ran a strong 1500 meter race, improving her national qualifying time with a 4:41.32. This time ranks Daymont among the top four in the country. In the 5000 meter race senior co-captain Anne Sateren (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior Brigid Franey (Lexington, Ky) placed second and third with times of 18:43.69 and 18:55.47, respectively. Senior co-captain Janet Hengel (Sartell, Minn.) placed third in the pole vault with a vault of 10'5.25".

Other Oles placing in the top eight were first year Abby Love (Appleton, Wis.) placing fourth in the 800 meter run. Senior Suzanne DePaulo (St. Louis Park, Minn.) placed fifth in the 5000 meter run. Sophomore Leah Dvorak (Elma, Iowa) leaped to a fifth place in the high jump. First year Becky Peterson (Plymouth, Minn.) placed seventh in the 200 meter dash. Finishing in eighth place were first year Brit Carlson (Stillwater, Minn.) in the 3000 meter run and senior Megan Magnall (Waverly, Iowa) in the 5000 meter run.

The St. Olaf relay teams ran very well. The 4x200 meter relay team set a season best time while finishing second. Hengel, Peterson, first year Jennifer Levenhagen (Appleton, Wis.) and Erin Davidson (St. Paul, Minn.) make up the team. The 4x400 meter relay team of Peterson, Love, Daymont and senior co-captain Sara Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) placed fourth with a time of 4:16.00. The Distance Medley relay team of sophomores Traci Bartz (Bemidji, Minn.), Dawn Mielke (Arlington, Minn.), Taryn Weakly (Milwaukee, Wis.) and senior Katie Storlie (St. Louis Park, Minn.) placed fourth with a time of 13:33.52.

The Oles will travel to Collegeville to take on the teams from St. Benedict, Concordia and St. Catherine in a final tuneup meet. The MIAC Championships will be contested the following weekend, also at St. John's University.
