The Carleton women and St. Olaf men took home top honors following the third and final day Saturday (Feb. 17) at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) swimming and diving championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

Carleton held off challenges from Gustavus and St. Olaf to repeat as MIAC women's champion. The Knights finished with 739 points, compared to 700 1/2 for the Gusties and 675.5 for the Oles. Carleton picked up first-place finishes Saturday in four events. Maroya Spalding, who won the 500 free on Thursday and 200 free on Friday, took top honors in the 1650-yard freestyle in 17:47.90. Marie Marsman also claimed her third individual title of the meet when she won the 100 freestyle in meet-record 52.31 time. Angie Soucek repeated as conference 3-meter diving champ, winning the event with a meet and MIAC record 524.65 score. Carleton also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:33.47 - a meet and conference record as well as an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying time.

St. Olaf, which had its 20-year string of men's conference championships snapped a year ago by Gustavus, turned the tables on the Gusties with a slim 27-point margin of victory, 847 1/2 to 820 1/5. The Oles, who went into the final day of competition 35 points behind Gustavus, received first-place finishes Saturday night in three events. Jake Hvistendahl (FY, Minnetonka, Minn.) won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.16. Tom Dow (Jr., Poway, Ca.) took the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.01 and Gabe Kortuem (Sr., Andover, Minn.) placed first in 3-meter diving with a meet and conference record 599.30 score.
