Oslo International Summer School earns honor

More than 60 years after the founding of the Oslo International Summer School (ISS), St. Olaf College continues to maintain strong ties with the program and houses its North American admissions office. Earlier this fall, the University of Oslo honored the ISS with the recognition of “the Best Learning Environment” in its entire educational system at its annual University Fest.

In attendance to receive the honor was Torild Homstad ’71, the North American administrator of the ISS and a visiting assistant professor of Norwegian at St. Olaf. University Fest commemorates the founding of the University of Oslo in 1811, when Norway remained under control of the Danish crown. It is the largest and oldest institution of higher education in the country.

The ISS was established in the years after World War II as a way to enhance students’ perspectives on the world and understanding of changes in the context of global citizenship and community. St. Olaf has been involved in the program since its inception.
