Members of the St. Olaf Band, conducted by Timothy Mahr ’78, embarked on a two-week study tour of Japan earlier this year. In addition to their performance schedule, students completed a course led by emeriti faculty members Pat Quade and Mac Gimse that examined Japanese culture and history.

Students spent the first two weeks of Interim on campus, splitting time between the rehearsal room and the classroom, where Quade and Gimse helped equip students with the tools to learn from the culture and aesthetic experiences they encountered.
