Student composition to help kick off alumni choir's 20th season
October 27, 2010
St. Olaf student Stanford Scriven '11 has composed a new choral work that will be premiered by Magnum Chorum during the alumni choral ensemble’s joint concert with the St. Olaf Choir October 30. The performance will initiate the 20th season for Magnum Chorum, an ensemble founded by St. Olaf alumni.
Scriven’s piece, called Hidden in Light, is based on text by English poet Frances Havergal (1836–1879). “This is Stanford's most lush composition yet,” says Associate Professor of Music Christopher Aspaas '95, conductor of Magnum Chorum. “It balances beautiful melodic flourishes with lush and powerful harmonies.”
Last year Scriven earned recognition for composing a piece, Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, that was performed during the 2009 Christmas Festival and broadcast nationally on the Performance Today radio program.
