Gustavus bounces Ole women
JANUARY 29, 2004 — The Oles lost a tough one when they hosted the Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday, January 28. Inconsistencies in the Oles' offense and defense, helped Gustavus win the contest 89-60.

Students to combine dance and technology in public presentation
JANUARY 29, 2004 — A performance of dance-technology student projects will be given Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. in Dittmann Studio #1. This work is a culmination of the interim course taught by Anthony Roberts, assistant professor of dance: Dance and the Computer.

Men's hockey gains one point in MIAC standings
JANUARY 28, 2004 — The mens hockey team gained one point from last weekends series with the first place Tommies. The Oles and Tommies faced off for a two game series that included 21 goals. The Oles skated to a 5-5 draw on Friday night at home, and lost a heartbreaker 6-5 on Saturday at St. Thomas.

St. Olaf men fall to Gustavus, 61-50
JANUARY 28, 2004 — The St. Olaf mens team battled in a hard fought game against Gustavus Adolphus. Despite missing several players, the Oles led the game for the first ten minutes, but were unable to regain it after that and fell 61-50.

Swimmers and divers have success at Stevens Point
JANUARY 27, 2004 — The St. Olaf Men's and Women's swimming and diving teams competed in their final invitational before the MIAC championships, when they traveled to Stevens Point, Wisconsin on January 23rd and 24th. The Ole Men finished with 708 points which put them third out of seven teams, and ahead of conference rivals Gustavus and Carleton. The women finished fifth out of nine teams with a total of 453 points ahead of Gustavus and right behind Carleton.

Last minute surge sparks Cardinals past Ole women
JANUARY 26, 2004 — The Oles dropped a close one to the Saint Marys Cardinals on Saturday, January 24. Despite leading much of the game, a run by the Cardinals near the final minutes of play put Saint Marys in a position to fight for the lead. Down by one point, with one minute left, the Oles could not get the shots they needed to win the game and fell 60-54.

Ole men four points shy of victory at home
JANUARY 26, 2004 — The St. Olaf Mens team suffered another tough loss at home. After leading Saint Marys for most of the game, the Oles saw their lead slip away at the very end of the game and lost 61-58.

Former Democratic frontrunner Howard Dean may not be electable as an anti-war candidate
JANUARY 26, 2004 — No anti-war candidate has ever won the presidency, says St. Olaf Associate Professor of Political Science Dan Hofrenning. "Americans are more likely to elect war heros than war protestors," he says. So, how will that trend affect Democratic contender Howard Dean? Ambassador Joyce Leader discusses issues related to peace and justice
JANUARY 26, 2004 — Ambassador to the Republic of Guinea Joyce Leader, recently retired from the U.S. Foreign Service, will speak at 10:10 a.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. During Leaders 22-year foreign service career, she was one of the U.S. State Departments long-term experts on refugee affairs. At 12:30 p.m. in Buntrock Commons Ballroom, Leader will lecture on her years in foreign service.

Gustavus slides past Ole women's hockey
JANUARY 25, 2004 — The Oles traveled to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. on Saturday, January 24 to play the second game in their two games series against Gustavus. Battling back from a 3-0 loss the night before, St. Olaf was determined to come out and play hard. However, a tough Gustauvs team controlled the game as the Oles fell 6-2.

St. Olaf to host symposium on civility and civic dialogue
JANUARY 24, 2004 — "Democracy is a means of living together, despite our differences," said German essayist, novelist and cultural critic Thomas Mann. "It's predicated on the assumption that one can vigorously contest the positions of one's adversary without questioning his or her personal integrity." Toward that end, St. Olaf College will host a daylong symposium called "Creating Dialogues" on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Norwegian-American history collection soon to be available online
JANUARY 24, 2004 — Housed for generations in the basement of the library at St. Olaf College, the Norwegian American Historical Association used to be one of the best-kept secrets on campus. Now, thanks to its collaboration with archivists and historians at the college, NAHA and its Norwegian-American treasures are available online.

Gusties shut out Oles in first game of weekend series
JANUARY 24, 2004 — The St. Olaf womens hockey team and Gustavus Adolphus College battled it out, on Friday, January 23, for the second place position in MIAC standings. The Oles hosted Gustavus in the first game of a two game series on Friday night at the Northfield Ice Arena. Although it was a fast and physical game, the Oles fell 3-0.

Women's hockey coach brings winning ways to a winning team
JANUARY 23, 2004 — Lauded as a legend in Minnesota high school hockey, Tom Osiecki has coached boys and girls at the high school level and been a scout for the Minnesota North Stars professional team. Now he's coaching women's hockey at St. Olaf -- and bringing his winning ways to a group of motivated student-athletes. Coach Osiecki and his team were profiled recently in Star Tribune South.

Concordia slips past men's basketball at home
JANUARY 22, 2004 — The Oles experienced a tough home loss to Concordia College on January 21, 2004. After leading by ten at halftime, the Oles saw their lead fade away, and were unable to come back with a win, as Concordia sliped past the Oles, 68-64.

JANUARY 22, 2004 — The St. Olaf women's basketball team struggled to overcome Concordia College, their strong defense, and exceptional rebounding in a 49-63 loss at home on Wednesday, January 21.

Second half lead slips away as Oles fall to Hamline
JANUARY 20, 2004 — St. Olaf College faced the Hamline University Pipers on Monday, January 19 at Skoglund Arena. The Oles and Pipers traded the lead back and forth, but the Pipers pulled out a last minute victory, passing the Oles 71-69.

Men's basketball win over Hamline, 70-66 in overtime
JANUARY 20, 2004 — St. Olaf made a remarkable comeback Monday, January 19th to beat Hamline University. The Oles scored the last ten points in the final 1:30 of the game to tie the game at 60 points at the end of regulation. After five minutes of overtime play, St. Olaf came away with the win, 70-66.

JANUARY 19, 2004 — The memory and timeless message of Dr. Martin Luther King., Jr., will be celebrated through music in the broadcast special "Lift Every Voice and Sing" on Classical 89.3, the public radio service of St. Olaf College. Recorded live at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the program airs on Monday, Jan. 19, 7 to 9 p.m. (in the Twin Cities metro area) and features a variety of traditional spirituals, contemporary gospel music, choral anthems and newly commissioned works for the occasion.

Women's hockey sweeps Augsburg for third sweep of the season
JANUARY 19, 2004 — The St. Olaf women's hockey team traveled to Augsburg on Saturday, January 17th for their second game against the Auggies. Coming off a Friday night 5-1 win, the Oles went into the game looking for their third conference sweep of the year. With less than 24 hours to recover from previous game, St. Olaf played hard for sixty minutes and game away with the 2-1 win.

Men's hockey sweeps Bethel for fourth consecutive win
JANUARY 19, 2004 — The St. Olaf men's hockey team hosted the Bethel Royals for the second game of their weekend series on Saturday, January 17. Coming off a road win at Bethel on Friday night, the Oles came out looking for the sweep. Although they fell behind early, they used their great powerplay to seal a 4-2 win for the second consecutive night.

Former ambassador to Israel speaks out on peace-making
JANUARY 19, 2004 — Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Samuel Lewis, will speak on the topics of peace-keeping, peace-making and his 31-year career in diplomatic service today in Boe Memorial Chapel at 10:10 a.m. His visit is part of St. Olaf Colleges Interim 2004 World Politics Speaker Series.

Listen and be heard during Northfield's Mainstreet Minnesota meeting
JANUARY 19, 2004 — Minnesota's Speaker of the House Steve Sviggum (R Kenyon) and Representative Ray Cox (R Northfield), both St. Olaf alumni from the class of 1973, will hold a "Main Street Minnesota" meeting in downtown Northfield from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Bagel Brothers, 306 Division Street. Sviggum regularly holds Mainstreet Minnesota meetings in communities throughout the state to discuss legislative issues and to hear from Minnesotans on the issues important to them. The public is invited to attend.

St. Thomas hot shooting passes Ole women's basketball
JANUARY 18, 2004 — The Oles faced the University of St. Thomas on the road on Saturday, January 17th. The Oles were looking for their second win in a row, but St. Thomas dashed that idea, as they came out tough early and won the contest, 78-45.

President Thomforde to speak at historic Norwegian-American Lutheran church
JANUARY 18, 2004 — St. Olaf College President Christopher M. Thomforde, an ordained Lutheran pastor, will speak on "Lordship and Leadership" at the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday, Jan. 18, at Lands Lutheran Church in Zumbrota. Founded 136 years ago by local Norwegian-Americans and B.J. Muus, who also founded St. Olaf College, the church has long had a strong relationship with the college.

"Growing in Christ, Caring in Community, Reaching Out in Service" is the mission of the 800-member congregation, located in a beautiful rural setting north of Rochester, Minn. Thomforde is speaking at the invitation of Lands Pastor Rob Nelson. The president is a frequent guest preacher at ELCA congregations

JANUARY 18, 2004 — The St. Olaf Mens Basketball team let another close game slip by on Saturday, January 17th, falling to St. Thomas 70-59. Both teams came into the game at 2-5 in MIAC play.

Women's hockey continues winning ways with 5-1 victory over Augsburg
JANUARY 17, 2004 — The St. Olaf womens hockey team continued their conference action with a two game series against Augsburg. The Oles hosted Augsburg at the Northfield Ice Arena on the Friday, January 16. The Oles played a solid game all around with great defense, tricky offense and great intensity and came away with the 5-1 win.

Men's hockey on three game winning streak, with 4-2 victory over Bethel
JANUARY 17, 2004 — The St. Olaf Mens hockey team completed in two weekend game weekend series with the Bethel Royals. The Oles, coming off a two game sweep last weekend over Lawrence, continued their winning ways with a 4-2 victory over Bethel on Friday, January 16.

Macalester second half run pulls away from men's basketball
JANUARY 15, 2004 — St. Olaf suffered a tough conference loss to Macalester on Wednesday, January 14th. The game was very close throughout, but the Scots were able to pull away late in the game, with a 73-54 victory.

Twin Cities media laud Gisselman's latest directorial effort
JANUARY 14, 2004 — Calling it "a tricky show on all levels," the St. Paul Pioneer Press described director Gary Gisselman's staging of Pacific Overtures at Park Square Theatre in St. Paul as "graceful" and "impressively solid throughout." The Minneapolis-based Star Tribune praised the production's "amazing pageantry and lively pacing." An artist in residence in the theater department at St. Olaf College, Gisselman is a highly regarded director in the Twin Cities, having staged productions at Chanhassen Dinner Theatre and the Guthrie Theater, where he is best known for his annual direction of A Christmas Carol.

As for Gisselman's latest work at Park Square Theatre, "he and his collaborators have created a visual and aural masterpiece," wrote Star Tribune critic Graydon Royce. "But amid all the display, the director makes the story accessible and vivid. Excellent work.


Asian tour included in Freeman Foundation support for eight faculty/staff projects at St. Olaf
JANUARY 14, 2004 — Five St. Olaf faculty and three staff have obtained support for various projects that will be mentored by members of St. Olaf's Asian Studies Program. This support includes a three-week tour of China and Japan in 2005.

St. Thomas edges women's hockey by one goal
JANUARY 12, 2004 — On Sunday, January 11th the Oles traveled to the St. Thomas Arena to play the second game of their weekend series with the University of St. Thomas. Game two proved to be a physically and mentally challenging game. The Oles fell fell behind by two goals but came back just two goals short of a victory as St. Thomas edged a one goal victory, 3-2.

Award-winning photographer chronicles a family's struggle with HIV/AIDS
JANUARY 12, 2004 — Follow the six-year journey of the Simon family, of rural Lonsdale, as the mother, a daughter and, ultimately, the survivors struggle to cope with HIV/AIDS. On Monday, Jan. 12, at 3:30 p.m., Star Tribune photographer Brian Peterson and nurse, caregiver and family friend Cari Trousdale will chronicle the triumphs and tragedies of Nancy Simon and her daughter, Candace, both of whom lost their lives to the virus. "I don't want my story to die with me. I want the world to know how it ends," Nancy Simon said before her death. Associate Professor of Social Work Mary Carlsen is bringing this touching tribute to St. Olaf College. Her friend Nancy Simon spoke on campus several times. Admission is free and open to the public. The program begins at 3:30 p.m. in the Viking Theater, Buntrock Commons.

Men's basketball wins at the buzzer over Augsburg
JANUARY 12, 2004 — The Oles broke a four game losing streak with a win over Augsburg College on Saturday, January 10th. The score was tied at 51 at the end of regulation, before Matt Schlenker (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) hit the game winning shot at the buzzer, to defeat Augsburg 58-56 in overtime.

Political science chair, 15 Democratic students study presidential politics
JANUARY 12, 2004 — When Dan Hofrenning, chair of the political science department at St. Olaf, wanted his students to get a first-hand look at presidential politics, he decided to take them to where the contest officially begins -- New Hampshire. The group is spending January Interim in the Granite State, listening to stump speeches, interviewing residents and recording their observations in daily journals. JANUARY 12, 2004 — St. Olaf played the Augsburg Auggies on Saturday, January 10, in Minneapolis, Minn. The Oles came up short in the final minutes and lost 73-64.

Men's hockey sweeps weekend series with Lawrence
JANUARY 12, 2004 — The St. Olaf men's hockey team faced Lawrence for second day in a row, for a second non-conference game. The Oles out-shot Lawrence 45-19 in a 6-3 victory. St. Olaf came out flying once again, scoring within the first two minutes.

St. Olaf Opera Workshop teams up with Minnesota Opera, Northfield Arts Guild
JANUARY 12, 2004 — St. Olaf students participating in the St. Olaf Opera Workshop will be coached by pros as they gain access to the resources of the Minnesota Opera in a new collaboration that also includes the Northfield Arts Guild.

Men's hockey shuts out Lawrence, 6-0
JANUARY 11, 2004 — The St. Olaf Men's hockey team posted a convincing win this past weekend, defeating the Lawrence Vikings 6-0 in non-conference play. The Oles got off to a fast start, scoring in the first two minutes of the game.

Women's hockey two goals short of upset
JANUARY 11, 2004 — On Saturday, January 10th the St. Olaf women's hockey team faced off against the University of St. Thomas. The Oles hosted St. Thomas at the Northfield Ice Arena in an action packed game to determine the first place team in the MIAC conference. The Oles fought hard for sixth minutes and fell just one goal short to St. Thomas, 4-3.

JANUARY 9, 2004 — They could have spent January in Europe, Asia, Australia or the Caribbean. Instead, 15 St. Olaf students spent the three weeks before the 2004 U.S. presidential primary in New Hampshire interning on campaigns.

Bethel edges Ole women's basketball by four points
JANUARY 8, 2004 — The St. Olaf women's basketball team traveled to St. Paul, Minn. on Wednesday evening for a game against the Bethel Royals. The Oles had a second half lead, but could not maintain the lead as the Royals slipped by them 67-71.

Men's basketball drops close game to Bethel
JANUARY 8, 2004 — The Mens Basketball team took on Bethel College Wednesday, January 7th. The game was exciting with both teams staying close until the end, but Bethel came away with a 77-68 victory.

Women's basketball six points shy of victory
JANUARY 6, 2004 — The St. Olaf women's basketball team hosted the Saint Benedict Blazers on Monday, January 5. The Oles played hard as both teams exchanged baskets to each hold the lead at various points in the game. Free-throw shooting late in the game enabled the Blazers to come away with the win, 67-62.

Men's basketball takes tough road loss against Saint John's
JANUARY 6, 2004 — The Saint Olaf Mens Basketball Team experienced another tough loss on Monday night against Saint Johns. The Johnnies outscored the Oles in both halves and walked away with a 86-58 win.

Second half shooting streak helps St. Catherine past St. Olaf
JANUARY 4, 2004 — In the first game of the new year, St. Olaf hosted the College of St. Catherine on January 3. Despite an Ole comeback near the end of the game, hot shooting and a streak of 16 points helped St. Catherine win the contest, 69-49.

St. Olaf women's hockey sweeps Connecticut College
JANUARY 4, 2004 — On Saturday, January 3 the womens hockey team notched their second win over Connecticut College at Teco Arena in Fort Myers, Florida. The Oles fought hard and came away with another 1-0 win, for their third consecutive shutout. Goalie, Kerry Rollwagen (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn.), recorded 25 saves in the shutout.

St. Olaf Choir to sing at St. John's church in Northfield
JANUARY 4, 2004 — Enjoy Sunday morning worship at St. John's Lutheran Church, 500 3rd St. W., Northfield, with the St. Olaf Choir. The Ole Choir, conducted by Anton Armstrong, will perform during worship on Sunday, Jan. 4, at 8:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Non-members of the church are welcome.

Women's hockey shuts out Connecticut College in Florida, 1-0
JANUARY 3, 2004 — The St. Olaf womens hockey team traveled to Fort Myers, Florida to play a non-conference game against Connecticut College. The Oles skated to a 1-0 victory on Friday, January 2, 2004 at Teco Arena. The Oles goaltender, Andrea Smith (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) had 20 saves and came away with a shutout.
