Wisconsin Lutheran pulls away from Oles with late game free-throws
DECEMBER 31, 2003 — The St. Olaf Mens Basketball team traveled to Thousand Oaks, California to play in the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Holiday Tournament. On Tuesday, December 30th, the Oles returned to play, taking on Wisconsin Lutheran in the consolation game. The Oles nearly pulled off remarkable comeback, but lost 75-67.

St. Olaf to 'strike up the band' on tour of Mexico in January
DECEMBER 31, 2003 — Thanks to a visionary minded St. Olaf graduate, and the organizing skills of St. Olaf Band manager Rich Erickson, the St. Olaf Band will be spreading music in many ways during its January tour of Mexico.

Instrument donations during St. Olaf Band tour to help Mexican village
DECEMBER 31, 2003 — Thanks to an idea from St. Olaf alum David Brye, and the initiative of St. Olaf Band Manager Richard Erickson, St. Olaf College has collected 36 instruments from all over the country to donate to a village in Mexico. According to a story in the Star Tribune, three recent St. Olaf graduates with music degrees will spend months in Mexico getting the village band started.

St. Olaf men's basketball fall to Cal Lutheran in holiday tourney
DECEMBER 30, 2003 — The St. Olaf Mens Basketball team traveled to Thousand Oaks, California to play in the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Holiday Tournament. The tournament was hosted by California Lutheran, with three other teams, Wisconsin Lutheran, Rockford College, and St. Olaf participating. On Monday, December 29th, 2003 the Oles opened the tournament taking on a tough California Lutheran team. Despite holding the Kingsmens leading scorer to five points, the Oles fell 67-50.

Religion professor helps assemble peaceful anti-war group every Saturday
DECEMBER 24, 2003 — Only days after Sept. 11, 2001, anti-war activists began to peacefully assemble every Saturday at noon on Bridge Square in downtown Northfield. They continue the weekly vigil to this day -- whatever the weather. "We represent the new face of the peace movement," said St. Olaf Assistant Professor of Religion Phil Stoltzfus, an organizer of the group, in a recent article in the Star Tribune. People for Peace and Goodwill, an outgrowth of the vigil, is unique to the Northfield area, Stoltzfus says. He also has brought St. Olaf students to PPG meetings to observe.

Beloved former St. Olaf President Sid Rand died Dec. 16, 2003

DECEMBER 17, 2003 — Sidney A. Rand, 87, who served St. Olaf College as president for more than 16 years, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at Northfield Hospital. A story honoring Dr. Rand appeared in the Dec. 19 edition of the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune. A funeral service was held at Boe Memorial Chapel on campus Dec. 23.

Carleton nips St. Olaf women by seven points
DECEMBER 11, 2003 — The St. Olaf Oles hosted the Carleton College Knights on December 10. Despite a strong comeback in the second half, the Oles came up short, 69-76.

Men's basketball falls to Carleton
DECEMBER 11, 2003 — The men's basketball team experienced a tough home loss on Wednesday, December 10, 2003. The Oles played a close game with cross town rival Carleton, but fell to the Knights 62-50 at Skoglund Arena.

Enjoy an evening of chamber music
DECEMBER 10, 2003 — St. Olaf music faculty Charles Gray, Andrea Een and David Carter offer an evening of string chamber music. The concert, at 7 p.m. in Christiansen Hall of Music, Urness Recital Hall, is free and open to the public.

Battle of the Bands
DECEMBER 10, 2003 — Hear and see student bands audition on Dec. 10 in the Pause in Buntrock Commons from 7 to 10 p.m. as they vie for the honor of being opening band for St. Olaf?s spring concert. St. Olaf vs. Carleton double-header basketball is always exciting
DECEMBER 10, 2003 — Catch the St. Olaf vs. Carleton double-header basketball game at Skoglund Center on Wednesday night. The women play at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men at 8:00 p.m. Played in front of packed stands, these are always exciting games.

Professor publishes three works on sociology of death, dying
DECEMBER 10, 2003 — Professor of Sociology Michael R. Leming, an expert on death, dying and bereavement, had three books published in fall 2003.

Two of his articles -- "Religion and the Mediation of Death Fear" and "The History of the Hospice Approach" -- appeared in Handbook of Death and Dying, a two-volume set for which Leming also served as a co-author. In addition, along with George E. Dickinson he co-authored the 2004-2005 Annual Editions: Dying, Death, and Bereavement.

The author of numerous scholarly works, Leming has taught at St. Olaf College since September 1975.


Senior dance students perform their work in 'sevendances'
DECEMBER 10, 2003 — On Dec. 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. in Kelsey Theater (Speech-Theater Building) the St. Olaf College Dance Department presents "sevendances," a concert showcasing the work of senior students Kate Bronson, Elise Ericksen, Denise Gagner, Leah Gross, Seth McNaughton and Mary Clare Zabinski. Also, Minneapolis choreographer Emily Johnson will present a work performed by senior Allison Lorenzen.

The concert is free and open to the public (the program is the same both nights).


Womens hoops, four points away from upset
DECEMBER 9, 2003 — The Oles travelled to Gustavus for their third conference game on Monday, December 8th. Although they put up a tough fight, the Oles came up short, losing 70-74.

Hot shooting helps Gustavus past Oles
DECEMBER 9, 2003 — The St. Olaf Men?s Basketball Team experienced a tough loss Monday, December 8, to Gustavus. The Gusties shot the lights out in Skoglund arena, connecting on 64.4% of their shots, including a blistering 66.7% from behind the arc, while the Oles struggled to get the ball in hoop, and fell 86-49.

Women's hockey undefeated in MIAC conference play
DECEMBER 9, 2003 — The St. Olaf women's hockey team traveled to St. Cloud on Sunday, December 7th for the second game of a weekend series against the College of St. Benedict. The women skated to a 1-0 victory to sweep the weekend series and remain a perfect 4-0 in MIAC conference play, in a three-way tie for first place.

Women's hockey keeps home winning streak alive
DECEMBER 8, 2003 — The women's hockey team hosted Saint Benedict on Saturday, December 6th. The Oles treated the home crowd to a 4-2 win to keep the Oles undefeated in conference play.

Men's hockey takes tough loss on the road at Saint Mary's
DECEMBER 8, 2003 — St. Olaf traveled to Winona, Minn. for their second conference game against Saint Mary's. The Cardinals came out flying and never gave up an early lead, and held on for a 6-1 win.

Saint Mary's too much for Ole women
DECEMBER 7, 2003 — The St. Olaf women's team travelled to Saint Mary's University in Winona, Minn. on Saturday, December 6th in search of their first season win. The Cardinals, however, took control of the game early and sailed past the Oles 82-62.

Men's hockey wins MIAC home opener, 5-3
DECEMBER 6, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's hockey team played their first home conference game against Saint Marys. The Oles, knowing how important it is to win at home, set the tone for the MIAC season with a strong 5-3 victory over Saint Marys.

Have yourself a merry little (tuba) Christmas!
DECEMBER 6, 2003 — Local tuba, sousaphone, euphonium and baritone players are invited to join St. Olaf student musicians in Buntrock Commons Crossroads for the fifth annual Merry Tuba Christmas, directed by St. Olaf music faculty Paul Niemisto. Registration is at 1 p.m.; rehearsal from 1:30-2:30 p.m.; and a performance, free and open to the public, at 3 p.m.

St. Olaf Bookstore offers book signings and more during Christmas Festival
DECEMBER 5, 2003 — Meet the authors! An annual event during the Christmas Festival is an opportunity for concert-goers and the general public to meet visiting authors at the St. Olaf Bookstore, located in Buntrock Commons lower level. On Dec. 5 at 6 p.m., children?s author Erik Brooks (The Practically Perfect Pajamas) will sign copies of his latest book Octavius Bloom and the House of Doom. On Dec. 6 at 6 p.m., St. Olaf graduate Nathan Dungan will be on hand to sign his book Prodigal Sons and Material Girls: How Not to Be Your Child?s ATM designed to help parents shape their children's financial habits. On Dec. 7 at 2 p.m., children?s author Gwenyth Swain will sign her latest book Wonder as I Wander.

Annual Christmas Fest may be heard in person, on the air
DECEMBER 5, 2003 — The 92nd annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival, "Awaken Our Souls, O God of Hope," features more than 500 student musicians from the St. Olaf Choir, St. Olaf Cantorei, Manitou Singers, Viking Chorus, Chapel Choir, St. Olaf Orchestra. Performances in Skoglund Center Auditorium are at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 4, 5 and 6; and, at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 7. The college?s public radio service, Classical 89.3 WCAL in the Twin Cities (88.7 KMSE in Rochester, Minn.), will broadcast this year?s Christmas Festival concert live at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 7. Classical 89.3 also will air a 90-minute Christmas Festival concert on Dec. 24 at 9 a.m. and Dec. 25 at 1 p.m.

Men's hockey gets first win
DECEMBER 4, 2003 — Two days after Thanksgiving, the men's hockey team traveled to northern Wisconsin to play their annual non-conference game against the Northland College Lumberjacks. The Oles ended a four game losing streak on Saturday night, with a convincing 5-2 win over the Northland Lumberjacks.

Commitment to international education keeps St. Olaf atop college rankings
DECEMBER 3, 2003 — St. Olaf College has emphasized international education for more than a half century. Since the mid-1990s, it also has consistently ranked No. 1 among baccalaureate colleges in the United States for the number and percentage of students it sends abroad. DECEMBER 3, 2003 — St. Olaf College retains its position as the No. 1 bachelor of arts institution in the United States in both number and percentage of students who study off-campus, according to the Institute of International Education. The Star Tribune featured the news.

Men's basketball wins home opener over Martin Luther 76-59
DECEMBER 2, 2003 — The St. Olaf Men?s Basketball team rebounded from a tough loss Saturday with a victory over Martin Luther College Monday, December 1 at Skoglund Arena. After leading by seven at half time, the Oles were able stretch their lead and come away with a win, 76-59.

Men's basketball drops conference opener to Concordia
DECEMBER 1, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's basketball team traveled to Moorhead, Minn. for the conference opening game against Concordia. The Cobbers started quickly, and then had to rally in the second half to come away with the 12-point victory, edging out the Oles 80-68.

Former prime minister of Norway to address upcoming Peace Prize Forum

DECEMBER 1, 2003 — Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, former prime minister of Norway and director-general of the World Health Organization from 1998 to 2003, will speak at the 16th annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum to be held at St. Olaf in February. Former President Jimmy Carter also will be a keynote speaker.

Concordia stops women's basketball in MIAC opener
DECEMBER 1, 2003 — Two days after Thanksgiving, the Ole women traveled to Moorhead for their first conference game of the season. The team tried to catch up to the Cobbers, who led the whole game, but the Oles fell 71-49 in MIAC conference action on Saturday, November 29.
