Promoting peace in Columbia
OCTOBER 31, 2003 — Delegates from the Lutheran World Relief campaign for Columbia, "Give Peace a Place," will be in Buntrock Commons, Norway Room, at 9 a.m. as part of a Midwestern educational tour designed to enlighten Americans about the on-going humanitarian struggle in Columbia, emphasizing its impact on women and children and highlighting ways in which organizations and communities of faith can help build peace in Columbia. St. Olaf announces major U.S.-Norway conference, Oslo Summer School administrator honored
OCTOBER 31, 2003 — At the recent U.S.-Norway Forum St. Olaf announced a major conference on American-Norwegian relations that the college will host in 2005. Also at the event, Norwegian Ambassador Knut Vollebaek presented the prestigious Ambassador?s Award to a past administrator of the Oslo International Summer School?s North American Admissions Office, which is located at St. Olaf.

Renowned Bible expert to lecture on cross-cultural context of Biblical times

OCTOBER 31, 2003 — Dr. Bruce J. Malina is perhaps the nation?s leading expert on using the modern social sciences to gain a deeper understanding of the Bible within its social context. He will present a lecture about the multi-cultural Bible at St. Olaf Nov. 6.

Volunteer Network Halloween party open to everyone
OCTOBER 30, 2003 — Bring your pre- and elementary-school children to the St. Olaf Volunteer Network Halloween party on Thursday, Oct. 30, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Black and Gold Ballroom of Buntrock Commons. Children should come in costume and with a bag for prizes. Various student organizations will sponsor such children?s activities as face painting, a mummy race and a cakewalk. Slightly scary halloween skits will also be performed by St. Olaf Students. Adult supervision is recommended for younger children, but not required. After the party, children are invited to go trick-or-treating in the student dormitories.

OCTOBER 30, 2003 — Jeffrey Frank, a senior editor at The New Yorker, and Diana Crone Frank, a linguist and Danish novelist, will visit St. Olaf on Monday, Nov. 10, to discuss The Stories of Hans Christian Andersen which the Franks edited and translated. The talk, free and open to the public, is at 7 p.m. in Buntrock Commons, Sun Room.

Chapel service to feature Russian choral ensemble
OCTOBER 29, 2003 — Daily chapel at 10:10 a.m. offers a unique service of Russian religious and folk music by Archiglas, an internationally known a cappella choral ensemble from St. Petersburg, Russia. Archiglas toured in Europe under the name "Neva-Russicum" for many years, however, after its first North American tour in 1998, the group reorganized and took on the name "Archiglas" (which means "outstanding voice"). Ensemble members include soprano Natalia Lebed who is studying opera at the Conservatory for Music in St. Petersburg ; mezzo-soprano Anastasia Zabolotskaya, who specializes in church music and conducts in one of St. Peterburg?s the most beautiful cathedrals; and, bass Alexey Goloviznin who has also studied piano and conducting at the St. Petersburg music conservatory and sings regularly at Trinity Cathedral of Alexsander - Nevsky Monastery. Archiglas is directed by baritone Dimity Vorobjev, who studied at the Conservatory for Music in St. Petersburg and conducts at the National Music Theater of Belarus.

Women's soccer fall short in double overtime
OCTOBER 29, 2003 — The St. Olaf women's soccer team suffered a disappointing loss on Saturday, October 25th to Concordia College. The Oles traveled the approximately 4 hours to Moorehead to fall to the Cobbers 4-3 in double overtime.

St. Olaf Choir to perform free, all-Mozart concert with Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra
OCTOBER 28, 2003 — The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra will perform Mozart's Requiem with the St. Olaf Choir in a free performance on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel at St. Olaf College.

Alum helping GOP win votes on college campuses nationwide
OCTOBER 28, 2003 — "Young Republicans have been an untapped resource," says Eric Hoplin, a St. Olaf alumnus who recently was elected chairman of the College Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C. A native of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Hoplin and his work were featured recently in the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune.

OCTOBER 27, 2003 — The St. Olaf volleyball team faced some of the nations best this weekend as they traveled to Whitewater, Wisconson for the Warhawk Invitational tournament. Friday the Oles lost to Central College 3-1, and also lost 3-1 to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Saturday St. Olaf fell to St. Norbert College, 3-0 and then fell to UW-Whitewater, 3-0.

Renowned Trinidadian writer Earl Lovelace at St. Olaf, Nov. 3, for rare reading
OCTOBER 27, 2003 — Trinidadian novelist, playwright and short-story writer Earl Lovelace will give a public reading at St. Olaf College on Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. Lovelace is one of a distinguished range of Trinidadian writers who have contributed richly to literature in English over the past 50 years. His visit to St. Olaf is a rare chance to hear his work as it was meant to be heard.

St. Olaf Orchestra concludes fall tour at St. Olaf
OCTOBER 27, 2003 — After performing in North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Minnesota, the 92-member St. Olaf Orchestra, conducted by Steven Amundson, returns to St. Olaf following its fall concert tour. The ?home? concert will be presented this evening at 8 p.m. in Skoglund Center Auditorium.

'Business and the Liberal Arts' will begin dialogue among students, alums
OCTOBER 27, 2003 — "Resolving Economic and Moral Dilemmas" is the title of the first Business and the Liberal Arts Forum at St. Olaf College, an event that organizers hope will occur annually. Sponsored by the Center for Experiential Learning, the event will be held Monday, Oct. 27, from 3:30 to 7 p.m.

Orchestra caps off tour with 'home' concert
OCTOBER 27, 2003 — The St. Olaf Orchestra, which Time magazine recently called ?one of the best college orchestras in the nation,? will perform at Skoglund Center auditorium on Monday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. The concert, which is free and open to the public, concludes the St. Olaf Orchestra?s five-state fall tour that featured performances in five Montana cities (Billings, Cut Bank, Missoula, Great Falls and Glendive) and five cities in Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota between Oct. 18 and 26.

The program includes Roman Carnival Overture by Johannes Brahms, Medea?s Meditation and Dance of Vengeance by Samuel Barber and An American in Paris by George Gershwin.


Organ recital will feature improvised symphony
OCTOBER 26, 2003 — Improvisational organist John Schwandt ?96 will perform an organ recital on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. The recital will include organ works of J.S. Bach, William Bolcom, John La Montaine and Marcel Dupré. In addition to accompanying his audience on two hymns, Schwandt will play a special set of choral preludes by a variety of St. Olaf composers. Especially unique to this recital will be an improvised organ symphony based on themes submitted at the recital by St. Olaf Music Faculty John Ferguson and Timothy Mahr. The performance, part of ?The Centennial Concert Series? commemorating the 100th anniversary of the St. Olaf Music Department, is free and open to the public.

Concordia stops Oles 2-0
OCTOBER 26, 2003 — The Oles travelled to Moorhead on Saturday for an important MIAC conference matchup with Concordia College. Concordia adapted better to the freezing gametime temperatures and beat the Oles 2-0, gaining their second conference win of the season.

Ole Football routs Macalester, 47-14
OCTOBER 25, 2003 — The St. Olaf football team put together back-to-back wins with their 47-14 victory over the Macalester Scots on Saturday afternoon at Manitou Field.

St. Olaf Orchestra caps off five-state tour with free home concert
OCTOBER 24, 2003Time magazine has called the St. Olaf Orchestra "one of the best college orchestras in the nation." The fall's "home concert" on campus -- played for parents, professors, peers and the public, and coming off an adrenaline-filled tour -- is always one of the ensemble?s best performances of the year. It will be Monday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m.

Silent film fun to include organist, classic Chaplin flick
OCTOBER 24, 2003 — Improvisational organist John Schwandt ?96 will perform as a theater organist, accompanying the classic Charlie Chaplin silent film, The Kid, on Friday, Oct. 24 at 10 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. Schwandt will begin the Friday event with a musical demonstration of theater organ music, followed by his live, improvised accompaniment to the silent film. Chaplin?s first full-length movie, The Kid was released in 1921 and stars Chaplin and Jackie Coogan (Hollywood?s first childhood star, who later played Uncle Fester on ?The Addams Family? TV show). The performance, part of ?The Centennial Concert Series? commemorating the 100th anniversary of the St. Olaf Music Department, is free and open to the public.

Buchanan, Strossen to square off in debate on civil liberties
OCTOBER 23, 2003 — Two of the nation's foremost authorities on civil liberties -- conservative Patrick Buchanan and liberal Nadine Strossen -- will square off in a debate on the topic at St. Olaf College on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. Tickets for the public are $5, and space is limited.

Volleyball wins third conference game in a row
OCTOBER 23, 2003 — It was a solid victory for the St. Olaf volleyball team as they went on the road Wednesday night to defeat the College of St. Catherine. The Oles controlled the momentum of the entire match and swept the Wildcat's in three games. It was a well-rounded effort by St. Olaf as they focused on their side of the floor and pushed the pace all night long.

Noted historian to speak on freedom in post-9/11 America
OCTOBER 23, 2003 — "No idea is more fundamental to Americans' sense of themselves as individuals and as a nation than freedom," says Eric Foner, DeWitt Clinton Professor of American History at Columbia University. Foner will speak at St. Olaf College on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. The public is welcome.

Volleyball defeats Hamline in five games
OCTOBER 21, 2003 — The St. Olaf volleyball team returned to action on Saturday afternoon for a conference game against Hamline. Coming off a Friday night victory over conference leading St. Thomas, the Oles were full of energy when they stepped onto the court Saturday afternoon. The team channelled their energy into another MIAC victory, defeating Hamline in five games, 3-2.

Oles fall to Wheaton in non-conference matchup
OCTOBER 21, 2003 — The Oles played solid soccer on Monday, but lacked the scoring power to overcome a talented Wheaton team. After defeating Macalester over the weekend, Wheaton continued their momemtum by defeating the Oles 2-0 at St. Olaf.

'Ghost file' documents unexplained phenomena on campus
OCTOBER 21, 2003 — Every institution has its ghosts, but St. Olaf has a file devoted to various ghostly sightings and experiences across campus. Over the years, a few students and employees have experienced strange phenomena in a variety of older academic buildings and residence halls. A "ghost hunter" even visited St. Olaf in fall 2003.

Johnnies stop men's soccer roll, 2-1
OCTOBER 20, 2003 — The Oles were handed a tough loss by Saint John's team on Saturday afternoon. With their home crowd in the stands, Saint John's responded by grinding out a 2-1 victory over the Oles.

Men's cross country finishes tenth at Jim Drews Invitational
OCTOBER 20, 2003 — The Ole men's cross country team traveled to LaCrosse, Wis. on Saturday, Oct. 18 to battle with some of the best teams that Minnesota and Wisconsin have to offer. Surrounded by beautiful bluffs on the Maple Grove Country Club golf course the Oles managed to race to a tenth place finish in the highly competitive meet, out of 17 teams.

Network for women in higher education to present annual conference at St. Olaf
OCTOBER 20, 2003 — 'Thriving, Not Just Surviving' could be the goal of almost anyone in the workforce these days. But it's a particular challenge for women in higher education, where budgets are tightening and leadership ranks are still dominated by men. Former Catalyst President Sheila Wellington, a nationally recognized expert on women in corporate America, will present the keynote speech at a two-day conference on how women in higher ed can "thrive, not just survive."

Football sails past Hamline, 43-13
OCTOBER 20, 2003 — The St. Olaf football team snapped a four-game skid, thumping Hamline 43-13 in a rare evening MIAC game at Griffin Field in St. Paul. The Oles scored 20 unanswered points before Hamline cut the advantage to 20-7 midway through the second quarter. St. Olaf led 30-13 at the half.

Layers of Meaning on display in Flaten Art Museum
OCTOBER 18, 2003 — "Layers of Meaning," a new exhibit in the Flaten Gallery of the Dittmann Center at St. Olaf College, features artists from across the country who use pick-up double weave in their contemporary work. The exhibit, which runs through Oct. 18, is accompanied by a video of the artists talking about their creations. Museum hours: M,T,W,F 10 a.m.?5 p.m., Th 10 a.m.?8 p.m., weekends 2?5 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

St. Olaf Student Congregation celebrates its golden anniversary
OCTOBER 18, 2003 — Young Lutherans learn lessons of church leadership firsthand by participating in the student congregation at St. Olaf. Although the group attracts fewer members than it did 50 years ago, the passion for worship and service remains vigorous and vital to this day.

Women's soccer pulls out close win in double overtime
OCTOBER 18, 2003 — The St. Olaf women's soccer team battled from behind in the last five minutes of play this weekend against the College of St. Catherine's. It took one overtime period before the Oles were victorious with a 3-2 win.

Volleyball bumps off conference leading St. Thomas
OCTOBER 18, 2003 — The St. Olaf volleyball team traveled to St. Paul on Friday night to face St. Thomas, the number one team in the MIAC. St. Thomas came into the eving match undefeated in conference play. With a young team on the floor, the Oles played well and pulled off a huge conference upset, defeating the Tommies in four games.

Internationally known blues singer, pianist, educator to perform
OCTOBER 16, 2003 — Almeta Speaks is renowned as a blues singer, television host and producer, educator and pianist. She will perform and present an "interdisciplinary reflection on the blues," along with several faculty members, during a residency in October at St. Olaf.

Executive coach, author, former youth worker to speak at chapel service
OCTOBER 16, 2003 — "Answering a call takes persistence, discipline and stamina," writes John P. Schuster, an executive coach, trainer and speaker, in his latest book, Answering Your Call: A Guide for Living Your Deepest Purpose. Schuster will speak during the St. Olaf chapel service on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. All daily chapel events are open to the public.

St. Olaf to host NCAA Division III wrestling championships in 2005
OCTOBER 16, 2003 — The NCAA has announced that the 2005 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship will be on the campus of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. The competition will be held in the St. Olaf Tostrud Center Fieldhouse. The connecting Skoglund Center Fieldhouse will be setup with workout and warmup mats throughout the championship.

Volleyball falls to Bethel, 3-1
OCTOBER 16, 2003 — The St. Olaf volleyball team fell short of a victory Wednesday night in their battle with Bethel College. The Oles started by winning the first game, 30-26, but then lost the next three games. The loss drops the Oles to 2-5 in MIAC conference play and 11-12 overall.

Men's soccer win close game at Hamline
OCTOBER 16, 2003 — On a chilly afternoon in St. Paul, MN., the Oles defeated Hamline by a narrow 1-0 margin. The Oles dominated Hamline but scored only a single goal, which came off a first half penalty shot.

Brush up on your classical Greek A, B, C's at lecture by SUNY professor
OCTOBER 16, 2003 — The St. Olaf College Dept. of Classics is sponsoring a free public lecture on Thursday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Holland Hall 501. John J. Peradotto -- the Andrew V. V. Raymond Professor of Classics Emeritus at State University of New York-Buffalo, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus and Benedict Distinguished Visiting Professor at Carleton College this fall -- will give an illustrated talk entitled "The Greeks Revolutionize the Alphabet."

Women's soccer sail past Hamline, 3-0
OCTOBER 15, 2003 — The St. Olaf women's soccer hosted their last home game of the regular season and picked up a big conference win over Hamline University, 3-0. If the Oles can finish first or second in the conference, they will play at home again, in post season play.

Three world-class Minnesota organizations to create historic 'anechoic' choral recording
OCTOBER 15, 2003 — A collaboration among St. Olaf College, 3M and the Wenger Corp. will produce an 'anechoic' -- or echo-free -- recording of the St. Olaf Cantorei, an 80-voice ensemble conducted by Professor of Music John Ferguson. The result could aid the design of concert halls and churches. Ferguson welcomes that: "Anything that can provide further insight for those people who attempt to design rooms that work musically is greatly appreciated," he explains.

Auschwitz survivor to speak about Nazi Germany
OCTOBER 15, 2003 — Henry Oertelt, a surviver of Auschwitz concentration camp, will speak about his experiences in Nazi Germany and death camps from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Viking Theater of Buntrock Commons.

Political scientist, 'radical' historian to speak about current events
OCTOBER 14, 2003 — Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Boston University, Howard Zinn is best known for his unique, down-to-earth perspective of history, chronicled in his book A People's History of the United States. Zinn will give a free public lecture at St. Olaf on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

St. Olaf's Upward Bound receives additional grant
OCTOBER 13, 2003 — The TRIO/St. Olaf Upward Bound program, in existence since 1990 and funded by the U.S. Department of Education, has been awarded an additional $100,000 under the Participant Expansion Initiative. As a result of this supplemental funding, the program, directed by Heather Campbell ?90, will now be able to add 20 students to the 67 currently enrolled. Upward Bound, one of the three pre-college Educational Opportunity Programs located at St. Olaf, is a year-round college-preparatory program for low-income students whose parents have not earned four-year baccalaureate degrees.

Bethel, rain spoil St. Olaf football game
OCTOBER 13, 2003 — The St. Olaf football team suffered its fifth loss of the season to 12th ranked Bethel College 33-7 before a packed house at Manitou field on Saturday afternoon October 11.

Women place seventh at Dan Huston Invite
OCTOBER 13, 2003 — St. Olaf traveled to Waverly, Iowa for the Dan Huston Invitational at Wartburg College. The team finished seventh out of twelve teams in the 4K race and fifth out of eleven teams in the 6K race. This earned the Ole women a fifth place finish overall out of eight schools, an impressive feat considering the teams top ten runners were at Pre-Nationals.

Macalester hands Oles first conference loss in men's soccer
OCTOBER 13, 2003 — The Oles travelled to Macalester on Friday night to battle for first place in the MIAC. Going into the game, both Macalester and St. Olaf had undefeated records in conference play. Macalester senior midfielder Nathan Knox notched a hat-trick Friday night, as Macalaster defeated the Oles 3-1 in front of a large crowd in St. Paul, Minn.

Women's soccer falls to Macalester, 2-1
OCTOBER 13, 2003 — In gale force winds and driving rain, the St. Olaf women?s soccer team fell to Macalester College 2-1 on Saturday, October 11th. The loss brings the women's record to 3-2-1 in conference and 6-6-1 overall. The Oles face their next opponent, Hamline University, for their last home game on October 14th at 4:00 p.m.

Ole women finish third at NCAA III Pre-National meet
OCTOBER 12, 2003 — St. Olaf sent ten runners to the NCAA III Pre-national meet on Oct. 10 at Hanover College. The Oles finished third out of sixteen teams participating.

Hagedorn releases new jazz CD, performs in Twin Cities
OCTOBER 12, 2003 — Assistant Professor of Music and renowned percussionist Dave Hagedorn, who is giving jazz a higher profile at St. Olaf College, has released a new CD, Solid Liquid, on the Artegra label.

Brain injury expert to speak at St. Olaf
OCTOBER 10, 2003 — Dr. Robert Karol, director of neuropsychology for Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital, will speak at St. Olaf College on Friday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m. in the Viking Theater. The colloquium, "Behavioral dyscontrol after acquired brain injury: An applied treatment perspective," is offered in connection with the St. Olaf Department of Theatre?s production of The Man Who, which runs through Oct. 15.

Prestigious Fiske Guide names St. Olaf a 'best buy'
OCTOBER 8, 2003 — Lists of the "best" colleges and universities in the United States are abundant -- and highly subjective. That's why St. Olaf College administrators consider it a particular honor to be cited as a "best buy" in the Fiske Guide to Colleges, which is produced by an internationally known education writer.

Acclaimed blues singer, pianist, educator Almeta Speaks to speak and sing at St. Olaf

OCTOBER 8, 2003 — It's hard to know which "handle" to use when describing Almeta Speaks. She's an internationally renowned singer and pianist, and a "gutsy blues singer" who also has been hailed as a musician of "extraordinary versatility and passion." Speaks will be performing and lecturing during an upcoming residency at St. Olaf College.

Artist in residence presents session at theater conference
OCTOBER 8, 2003 — Theater Artist in Residence Dona Werner Freeman attended the National Education Theatre Association conference in Minneapolis, Oct. 2-4. She presented a session for theatre educators focusing on building ensembles for casts and classes.

St. Olaf and Wells Fargo to offer college-financing tips
OCTOBER 8, 2003 — "The future is now." Parents of grade schoolers contemplate that fact as they start to save for their children's college education. "The Future Is Now" will also be the theme of a breakfast seminar being sponsored by Wells Fargo and St. Olaf College -- and featuring Barbara Lundberg, vice president and dean of enrollment, and Katharine Ruby, director of financial aid at the college. Other speakers will include an account executive from Wells Fargo's education financial services division. Oles compete in the MIAC Championships
OCTOBER 8, 2003 — The Ole mens golf team competed in the always competitive MIAC Championships this past weekend held at Bunker Hill Golf Course (Coon Rapids, Minn). Unlike the previous years where cold wet weather dampered play, the weekend saw mild temps and little wind which made for a great golf action. The Oles had hopes of moving up in the MIAC standings after last years disappointing eighth place finish but were unable too, finishing with another disappointing season and droping to ninth place in the MIAC. Gustavus Adolphus captured their second straight championship with stellar play on the second day to beat Saint Johns Universtiy and St. Thomas who were also in contention for the title.

Men's soccer shutout Simpson in non-conference battle
OCTOBER 6, 2003 — The Oles boosted their overall record to 5-4-2 with a solid 2-0 victory over Simpson College on Sunday afternoon at Rolf Mellby field, in a non-conference game.

OCTOBER 6, 2003 — Eight St. Olaf employees took part in the Oct. 5 Twin Cities Marathon. Principal Gifts Officer John Kilbride posted the fastest time of the group at 3:26:25. Assistant cross country coach Sara Daymont, herself a star runner at St. Olaf in the 1990s, was the fastest woman at 3:47:42. Other St. Olaf runners were College Librarian Bryn Geffert (3:31:21), Microcomputing Consultant Steve Rholl (3:36:52), Buntrock Commons Director Tim Schroer (3:48:59), Assistant Track Coach Dick Daymont (3:47:41), Classical 89.3 Host Melissa Ousley (3:53:26), Professor of Biology Kathleen Shea (3:53:35) and Instructor in Spanish Joan Odd (5:26:54).

Ole men play in I.T.A and Midwest Open tennis tourney
OCTOBER 6, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's tennis team participated in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and Midwest Open tennis tournaments the weekend of October 3rd-5th at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.

Ole Men Runners Take 2nd at Midwest Long & Short Course Challenge
OCTOBER 6, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's cross-country team traveled to Colfax, Wisc. on Friday, Oct. 3 attempting to win the overall Long & Short Course Championship for the third consecutive year. The Oles did not accomplish that goal, but did run well, finishing a close 2nd with 82 points, compared to 1st place Eau Claire's 73 points. The meet, jointly hosted by UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire is the only one of the year for the Oles when the squad is split into two groups, one running the 5000 meters and the other running the standard 8000 meters. The overall scores are totaled up based on the points scored by the top three finishers for a team in each race.

Arizona State University professor presents two Belgum lectures
OCTOBER 6, 2003 — The 25th annual Eunice Belgum Lecture series features Margaret Urban Walker, Lincoln Professor of Ethics, Justice, and the Public Sphere at Arizona State University. Walker will present two related lectures on forgiveness and moral repair. The first lecture is today at 3:30 p.m. in Holland Hall 501; the second is Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Holland Hall 501. The Eunice Belgum Memorial Lectures were established by friends and family to honor Eunice Belgum, a 1967 St. Olaf graduate. The annual lecture series is sponsored by the St. Olaf College Philosophy Department.

Women's soccer defeats Simpson in overtime
OCTOBER 6, 2003 — After 20 seconds of overtime play the St. Olaf women's soccer team defeated Simpson College 5-4 on Sunday, October 5th.

Music professors to perform works of Bach at Northfield church
OCTOBER 6, 2003 — A St. Olaf College faculty concert celebrating the music of Johann Sebastian Bach will be presented at the First United Church of Christ in Northfield on Monday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. by Andrea Een and Theo Wee. The concert will include works for violin, viola, organ and piano by this master of the Baroque period.

Women's cross country runs to sixth at Midwest Challenge
OCTOBER 5, 2003 — St. Olaf raced to a sixth place finish in the Midwest Challenge in Colfax, Wisconsin on Friday. The team was led by sophomore Jenny Ingebritsen (So, Bloomington Minn.) who finished in 23rd place, followed by Rebecca Peterson (Sr, Mountain Lake Minn.) placing 25th overall, and Jenna Barke (So, Roseville Minn.) coming in 38th place.

Colorado nips men's soccer, 3-1
OCTOBER 4, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's soccer team suffered a non-conference loss on Saturday, October 4, when they hosted Colorado College. Despite the Oles solid play, the fell to Colorado 3-1.

Women's soccer ends in 1-1 tie, after double overtime
OCTOBER 4, 2003 — The St. Olaf women's soccer team took on the College of St. Benedict on October 4th on their home turf, Rolf Mellby Field and tied the Blazers 1-1 in double overtime.

St. Olaf honors Dominick Argento, one of five honorary degrees to be bestowed this year

OCTOBER 4, 2003 — Minnesota?s Dominick Argento is one of the 20th century?s preeminent composers for the voice. His list of operas is unsurpassed by any American composer both for its quantity and the number of works that have entered the repertoire of major opera companies. On Oct. 9, St. Olaf College added one more honor to his long list of accomplishments.

St. Thomas stops Ole Football, 27-9
OCTOBER 4, 2003 — The Ole football team gave up four second half touchdowns, as they lost to St. Thomas 27-9 at O?Shaunessey Stadium in St. Paul, Minn. The Tommies rallied from a 3-0 halftime deficit to win infront of their Homecoming crowd on Saturday afternoon.

Volleyball sweeps Augsburg, 3-0
OCTOBER 2, 2003 — The St. Olaf volleyball team took their game on the road Wednesday night and brought home another MIAC victory. The Oles, now 9-8, beat Augsburg College in a three game match.

Bethel shutout by women's soccer, 6-0
OCTOBER 2, 2003 — The Oles bounced back from their disappointing loss to St. Thomas to pick up another conference win against the Bethel Royals. The Oles won 6-0 at the Royals home field on Wednesday, October 1st.

Men's soccer remains undefeated at home
OCTOBER 1, 2003 — It was an all-around solid effort by the Oles at home Tuesday afternoon, as they shutout Bethel, 4-0. The Oles played stifling defense all game, allowing Bethel only a couple scoring opportunities.
