Women golfers host the first College City Classic
SEPTEMBER 30, 2003 — The St. Olaf Women's Golf team hosted the College City Classic this past Sunday and Monday at Willinger's Golf Club, located just west of Northfield, Minn. Six MIAC colleges participated, including Augsburg, Carleton, Concordia-Moorhead, Gustavus Adolphus, and St. Thomas, along with the Oles.

St. Olaf staff member Kevin Larson has served in the Minnesota National Guard, relatively uneventfully, for nearly 30 years. Now the husband and father of two is scheduled to leave for active duty in Kosovo. Like other Reservists, his tour of duty will be long -- up to a year, he says. And although he's excited, he's feeling homesick already.


Ole women compete at Carleton JV Classic
SEPTEMBER 29, 2003 — St. Olaf finished third in the Carleton JV Classic Invitational on Friday. Mary Krusen (So, Kenai Ala.) took first for the Oles while coming in 12 place overall. Other runners that faired well in the invitational were Katie Souder (So, Green Lane Pa.) placing 13th overall, Jaci Butala (Sr, St paul Minn.) coming in 15th place, Emily Hagen (Sr, Eden Prairie Minn.) coming in 18th place, and Lauren Cassat (Fy, Overland Park Kan.) placing 19th in the Carleton JV Classic.

Oles participate in Carleton Invitational
SEPTEMBER 29, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's tennis team participated in the Carleton Men's Tennis Invitational over at Carleton on Sunday, September 27th. The invitational included St. Olaf, Carleton, St. John's and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. It was a flighted format for singles and doubles. Our singles line-up was Ted Nagel, Tom Nagel, Ross Bidlingmaier, Mike Matsuura, Patrick Marsolf, and Tom Wampler. Our doubles line-up was Ted and Tom Nagel, Chase Donaldson and David Harris, and Bryon McDonald and Mike Matsuura. Ted Nagel won his flight at number one singles and the Nagel twins won their flight at number one doubles.

Women finish fourth at Roy Griak Invite
SEPTEMBER 29, 2003 — St. Olaf competed to a fourth place finish in the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota on Saturday. The team was led by a pack of sophomores and first year students. Lindsay Boetcher (So. Eau Claire Wis.) came in first for the Oles by finishing in 22nd place, followed by Erin Weier (Fy, Faribault Minn.) placing 26th overall, and Stephanie Block (Fy, Minnetonka Minn.) coming in 30th place. Other top scorers for the Ole women were Erin Bengtson (So, Flowermound Texas) who placed 31st overall, Kezia Manlove (So, Rapid City S.D.) coming in 33rd place, Larisa Nordstrom (So, Des Moines Iowa) placing 35th overall, and Sarah Estill (So, Shoreline Wash.) placing 40th in the Roy Griak Invitational.

Oles play at Gustavus
SEPTEMBER 29, 2003 — The St. Olaf women's tennis team participated in a tournament over at Gustavus on Friday, September 26th and Saturday 27th. Two Oles (Jamie Brau and Emily Eggert) played in the I.T.A. (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) tournament and seven Ole's (Michelle Wiersma, Carrie Wiersma, Liz Klein, Lauren Benson, Libby Douglas, Sarah Pray, and Jorie Steffen) participated in the Fall Invitational for a team's number four and lower ranked players. All the players competed in singles and doubles.

Workshop by professional cellist to address music injuries
SEPTEMBER 29, 2003 — Minnesota Orchestra cellist Janet Horvath will present her two-hour workshop ?Playing (less) Hurt? at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, in Urness Recital Hall at St. Olaf College. The workshop, which addresses injury prevention for musicians, is based on her book of the same name published in 2002. The workshop is free and open to the public.

?Musicians face many challenges: a highly competitive environment, performance anxiety, demanding repertoire, years of solitary practice and awkward postures,? says Horvath. ?The hectic pace of rehearsals and performances added to this mix often results in the very real risk of pain an injury.? Her workshop will address these unique health issues as they relate to a variety of instruments and different parts of the body.


Men's soccer celebrates homecoming with impressive win
SEPTEMBER 29, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's soccer team had not played a home game since August 29th when the faced Luther. The Oles responded to a large and enthusiastic crowd by notching a convincing win over St. Thomas, 3-1.

Volleyball splits two games over Homecoming weekend
SEPTEMBER 29, 2003 — It was a big Homecoming weekend for St. Olaf volleyball as they hosted two MIAC matches in two days. Friday night the Oles played five games against the College of Saint Benedict, and took a tough loss 3-2. The Oles came back on Saturday afternoon when they hosted Concordia and pulled out a 3-1 victory.

St. Olaf Orchestra to rehearse alongside professional musicians
SEPTEMBER 28, 2003 — As the St. Olaf Orchestra prepares to go on its annual fall tour, the ensemble will get a rare opportunity to practice alongside the Minnesota Orchestra this Saturday afternoon in a "side by side" rehearsal at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. "The students are very excited," says conductor Steven Amundson.

St. Thomas gives women's soccer their first conference loss
SEPTEMBER 28, 2003 — The St. Olaf women?s soccer team faced one of their biggest conference opponents on Saturday, September 27th at St.Thomas. The Tommies scored early and often, as the Ole women faced their first loss in conference play, with a 5-1, final score.

Urban journalist fascinated, amused by small-town football rivalries
SEPTEMBER 28, 2003 — When the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune set out to discover the heart of small-town college football, the newspaper found no better example than the friendly rivalry between St. Olaf and Carleton colleges, where the annual football faceoff has now become the Cereal Bowl, courtesy of Malt-O-Meal, Northfield's second-largest employer.

Wind Chime Memorial to be dedicated Homecoming weekend
SEPTEMBER 28, 2003 — During Homecoming and Family Weekend, on Sunday, Sept. 28, St. Olaf will dedicate a newly constructed wind chime memorial tower commemorating young people whose lives were cut short while they were students at the college. The tower is made from forest salvage, trees that lived their lives and died naturally in place ? an appropriate element for a student memorial. The memorial will house more than 100 individually tuned wind chimes, each bearing the name of a student who died during his or her time at St. Olaf.

Family finance expert to discuss how marketers target children
SEPTEMBER 27, 2003 — A 1987 graduate of St. Olaf College, Nathan Dungan grew up with what he calls the "share, save, spend" philosophy -- the idea that any person, or household, should think about philanthropy and prudence first, before going out shopping. Dungan's new book, Prodigal Sons and Material Girls: How Not to Be Your Child's ATM, has drawn attention from CBS News, Time magazine, Business Week, the Star Tribune and other media for its hard-hitting -- and potentially unpopular -- message. America's young people have become obsessed with money and status, Dungan says, and marketers are playing into children's greed. Dungan will be on campus during Homecoming and Family Weekend to discuss his book, the reaction to it and what parents can do to keep their children grounded and grateful for what they have. St. Olaf drops Homecoming game to Saint John's
SEPTEMBER 27, 2003 — The St. Olaf football team lost its second straight game to #2 nationally ranked Saint John's University, 45-6 in MIAC action on Saturday, September 27th. A Homecoming crowd of over 5,000 watched the game at Manitou Field.

The Hill is alive with music this weekend
SEPTEMBER 27, 2003 — Homecoming and Family Weekend features two days of music-making on the Hill. The St. Olaf Band, conducted by Timothy Mahr, presents its annual "Collage" concert this evening at 7:30 p.m. in Skoglund Center Auditorium. Sunday, at 2:30 p.m., a special family weekend concert features St. Olaf College?s Manitou Singers, Viking Chorus and the Norseman Band performing in Skoglund Center Auditorium.

Volleyball falls to Gustavus in three games
SEPTEMBER 25, 2003 — The St. Olaf volleyball team traveled to St. Peter on Wednesday, Sept. 24 for a match against Gustavus. The Oles played hard, but fell to the Gusties, in three games, 30-28, 30-20, and 30-28. St. Olaf played with Gustavus' big front row attack and made a strong push in game three but it came too late.

Women's soccer undefeated in MIAC conference, 2-0
SEPTEMBER 25, 2003 — On a blustery day on their home field, the St. Olaf women?s soccer team won their second conference game of the season against Gustavus, 2-1. This win keeps the Oles undefeated in conference play at 2-0, and 4-4-0 overall.

Men's soccer undefeated in MIAC with win over Saint Mary's
SEPTEMBER 24, 2003 — The men's soccer team entered their game with Saint Mary?s on Sunday, with a perfect record in the MIAC. The Oles were dominant from the start, dictating the pace and type of game that was to be played. Saint Mary?s put up some scoring opportunities early, as the Oles adjusted to the rarely seen three-forward attack they were facing. St. Olaf played tough and shutout Saint Mary's 2-0.

Antarctica's Jacobel Glacier named after St. Olaf professor
SEPTEMBER 24, 2003 — The United States Board on Geographic Names, acting on a recommendation of the United States Geological Survey, has named an Antarctic glacier the "Jacobel Glacier" in recognition of St. Olaf Professor of Physics Robert W. Jacobel who has conducted research in Antarctica for the past 15 years.

Women's soccer shutsout Saint Mary's, 5-0
SEPTEMBER 23, 2003 — After two weekends on the road, the St. Olaf Women?s soccer team welcomed the chance to play their first conference game of the season at home. On Saturday, September 20th, the Oles shutout Saint Mary?s 5-0 to start off their conference season undefeated.

Ole men runners place fourth at St. Olaf Invitational
SEPTEMBER 23, 2003 — The Ole harriers returned to their home course for the first time since competing at the nationals meet last November and placed fourth out of a field of 14 teams. They faced some tough competition, including Mankato State (ranked 19th nationally in Division II), as well as top MIAC teams St. Thomas, Carleton, and Saint John?s. Mankato State outpaced the competition to finish 1st with 32 points, while St. Thomas and Carleton finished close behind with 53 and 63 points respectively. The Ole men had 109 points for a fourth place finish.

Tenor David Lee Brewer teams with St. Olaf Gospel Choir
SEPTEMBER 23, 2003 — Morning Chapel at 11:10 a.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel offers a service of music with David Lee Brewer, internationally-known tenor, and the St. Olaf Gospel Choir. Brewer has sung with opera companies worldwide including Lyric Opera Cleveland, Houston Grand Opera, Opera Monte Carlo, the Deutsche Nationaltheater in Weimar Germany, Lyric Opera of Chicago and Seattle Opera and has appeared with many prestigious symphonic ensembles.

Faculty recital to celebrate music by women composers
SEPTEMBER 22, 2003 — A solo piano recital featuring music by 18th to 20th century women composers from a variety of countries will be performed by Associate Professor of Music Nancy Paddleford on Monday, Sept. 22 at 8:15 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall. Composers on the program are Marianna D'Auenbrugg, Grace Welsh, Amy Marcy Cheney Beach, Cecile Chaminade and Grazyna Bacewicz.

Women finish second at Ole Invite
SEPTEMBER 22, 2003 — St. Olaf finished tied for second place with Carleton College in the St. Olaf Invite Saturday. The team was led by Kezia Manlove (So, Rapid City S.D.) who finished 14th place overall, chased by Lindsay Boetcher (So, Eau Claire Wis.) placing 16th overall, Sarah Estill (So, Shoreline Wash.) coming in 18th place, and Erin Bengtson (So, Flowermound Texas) placing 23rd overall. Other Oles who had strong races for the team were Marit Grorud (Sr, Fremont Neb. ) coming in 24th place, Erin Weier (Fy, Faribault Minn.) coming in 26th place, and Larisa Nordstrom (So, Des Moines Iowa) placing 27th in the St. Olaf Invite.

Ole women golfers have good showing at Luther
SEPTEMBER 22, 2003 — The St. Olaf women's golf team traveled to Decorah, Iowa this weekend to compete in the Luther Invitational at Oneota Golf Course. Out of the four MIAC schools present, the Oles placed second. The team finished the one day 18 hole event with a with a 373, to place tenth out of 14 teams.

DeLaitsch leads Ole golfers in Carleton Invitational
SEPTEMBER 22, 2003 — The Men's Golf team competed at the Carleton Fall Invitational this weekend at the Northfield Golf Club. The team finished the 36 hole event with a score of 648, to finish fourth out of ten teams. Leading the way for the Oles with his impressive play for a second straight week was Brian DeLaitsch (FY, Owatonna, Minn.) who fired a 77 the first day, followed by a two over par 74 the second day. DeLaitsch's 7 over par total of 151 earned him a third place finish out of over 50 golfers in the field.

Outdoor blues concert to feature father, three sons
SEPTEMBER 22, 2003 — Talk about a blue Monday: The Clayton Miller Blues Band, featuring brothers Clayton, Cole and L.J. Miller and their father, Larry Miller, who plays bass, will perform Monday, Sept. 22, at 8 p.m. on the plaza on the south side of Buntrock Commons. The band, whose youngest member is only 9 years old, has played with legendary bluesman B.B. King and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. In case of rain, the event will move indoors to the Pause, and tickets will be $5. The outdoor event will be free.

Professor emeritus of art reflects on sculptor Granlund's legacy
SEPTEMBER 21, 2003 — The death of sculptor Paul Granlund saddens many Minnesotans who were moved by the sculptor's work -- but none more, perhaps, than Professor Emeritus of Art Mac Gimse, who shared a friendship with the sculptor and was responsible for bringing some of his work to the St. Olaf campus.

Oles come back, but fall to Augsburg
SEPTEMBER 20, 2003 — St. Olaf came back from a 13-0 deficit in the second quarter, by scoring 24 unanswered points, against Augsburg on Saturday afternoon. The Oles took an 18-13 lead at halftime as both teams came out in the third quarter scoring six more points. Augsburg rallied in the fourth quarter, posting twelve straight points, to extend the lead to 31-24, the eventual final score.

The Last Five Yearsdebuts in Kelsey Theater
SEPTEMBER 20, 2003The Last Five Years, a musical by Jason Robert Brown, produced by FiveGuys Theatre Co. and student-directed by Matt Trucano ?06, makes its Minnesota debut. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. in Kelsey Theater, Speech Theater Building. The musical traces the falling in and out of love of 20-somethings in the 21st century. Tickets are available at the door ($3, students, faculty and staff; $6, public).

Faculty member receives 'best adviser' award from political science honor society
SEPTEMBER 19, 2003 — Associate Professor of Political Science Charles Umbanhowar, Sr., has helped shape St. Olaf's Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science honor society chapters into one of the best in the nation. His "Best Chapter Adviser of 2003" award holds special significance for Umbanhowar as this is his final semester before retirement.

Assistant professor of economics to address Minnesota Education Summit
SEPTEMBER 19, 2003 — Terry Fitzgerald, a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and, as of last year, an assistant professor of economics at St. Olaf College, will deliver the keynote address at the 2003 Minnesota Education Summit. His topic: "The Minnesota Economy: What Happened in 1959?" Fitzgerald will examine the relationship between the economy and schools. Men's soccer gets Gustavus, 1-0 in double overtime
SEPTEMBER 19, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's soccer team started their conference play this past week with a game against Gustavus. Both teams were scoreless during regulation, forcing the game into overtime. During the second overtime, the Oles held on with one goal, to shutout Gustavus 1-0 double overtime.

St. Olaf Music Department to celebrate 100 years with series of morning concerts
SEPTEMBER 18, 2003 — The St. Olaf College Department of Music will share its talents and gifts with the public as it celebrates its centenary this year. On Thursday, Sept. 18, at 11:30 a.m., the Community Time Centennial Concert Series will debut in Urness Recital Hall, Christiansen Hall of Music. This all-Grieg recital will feature the beautiful melodies of Norway's most important composer, including "Grieg Songs" by St. Olaf Department of Music chair and tenor Dan Dressen and pianist Sonja Thompson, an assistant professor at Augsburg College; and "Grieg Sonata for Cello and Piano" by cellist and Associate Professor of Music David Carter, along with pianist and Assistant Professor of Music Kent McWilliams. Other themes in the monthly series will include five centuries of music, Valentine's Day, globalization and music of the United States. The series is held during the campus's "Community Time," a deliberate break during the workday every Thursday for people to get to know each other and appreciate the talents and diversity on campus.

Illustrator L.K. Hanson gallery talk, exhibit
SEPTEMBER 16, 2003 — Minneapolis Star Tribune illustrator, writer and St. Olaf alumni Larry K. Hanson presents a gallery talk at 4 p.m. in Dittmann Center. Hanson?s exhibition, "If It?s in by Noon, It?s Art by Five," currently on exhibit in the Dittmann Center, illustrates the creativity and demands of journalism and visual art. Hanson is a 1966 St. Olaf graduate and has worked at the Minneapolis Star Tribune for the past 25 years.

Lawrence sends men's soccer home scoreless
SEPTEMBER 16, 2003 — A day after a tough road loss to UW- Oshkosh, the St. Olaf men's soccer team traveled to Appleton, Wisconsin for a game against Lawrence University. The Oles were ready to play tough, but another day of poor playing conditions found the Oles shutout by Lawrence 2-0.

Men's soccer falls to UW-Oshkosh
SEPTEMBER 15, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's soccer team travelled to Wisconsin for a game against University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday, Sept. 13. Conditions at game time were windy and rainy, creating a swamp-like effect on the field. The Oles realized they were going to have to adjust their style of play to meet the challenge of the conditions, but it was too late, as the Oles fell 5-0.

SEPTEMBER 15, 2003 — After two weekends on the road in Wisconsin, the Ole women's soccer team compiled a 1-3 record. They returned home ready to begin conference play on Saturday, September 20th, when they host Saint Mary's at 4:00 p.m.

Grieg recital kicks off morning concert series to celebrate St. Olaf music department
SEPTEMBER 15, 2003 — ?Concerts in the middle of the day break up the stress and monotony of the day,? says Kent McWilliams, organizer of a new morning concert series celebrating 100 years of St. Olaf's Department of Music. The series starts this week with a performance of the music of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg.

Women's cross country finishes in top 3 at Carleton Invitational
SEPTEMBER 15, 2003 — The St. Olaf women raced in the Carleton Early Invitational on Sept. 13th. The Oles finished third out of six teams, being nudged out of second place by host Carleton by just one point. The top five runners for the Oles were separated by only 18 seconds, and the top seven runners by 26 seconds. Finishing in the top five spots for St. Olaf were Kenzia Manlove (So, Rapid City S.D.), Erin Weier (Fy, Faribault Minn.), Lindsay Boetcher (So, Eau Claire Wis.), Larissa Nordstrom (So, Des Moines Iowa), and Brenna Bray (So, Stillwater Minn.).

SEPTEMBER 14, 2003 — The St. Olaf Men's golf team traveled to Sauk Center, Minnesota this weekend for the Saint John's Fall Invitatinoal held at Greystone Golf Course. The Ole men shot a 318-324=642 to finish seventh out of sixteen teams. The highlight of the tournament was Brian DeLaitsch's (FY, Owatonna, Minn.)perfect 8 iron shot on the par-3, 145 yard 17th hole, right into the cup, for his first ever Hole-In-One.

Professor of Philosophy, essayist and former boxer Gordon Marino argues in a new "Boxing" column in the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune that it's time to pay attention again to this misunderstood and overlooked sport.

St. Olaf wins first annual "Cereal Bowl"
SEPTEMBER 13, 2003 — St. Olaf football team amassed 491 yards of total offense in their 40-16 victory over Carleton Saturday afternoon. The Oles jumped to a 20-0 first quarter lead on the heels of two Brian Senske (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) touchdown passes. The victory was the seventh straight win for St. Olaf over Carleton and the first win the in Malt-O-Meal sponsored "Cereal Bowl."

St. Olaf and Carleton meet in Cereal Bowl
SEPTEMBER 13, 2003 — One of the oldest rivalries in college football continues when St. Olaf College and Carelton College meet in the Cereal Bowl on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. ? the Oles' first home game of the season. Fans will receive free cereal compliments of the Malt-O-Meal Co. of Northfield. The halftime program will feature a tribute to the undefeated Ole football team of 1953.

Golf pro, women's coach, St. Olaf graduate to coach men's golf as well
SEPTEMBER 12, 2003 — St. Olaf College has named its women's golf coach and sports information director as coach for the men's golf program. Le Ann Finger, a 1985 alumna of the college, is also a tournament-winning golf professional who recently shot a hole-in-one.

Ancient art form incorporates modern themes in show at St. Olaf
SEPTEMBER 12, 2003 — "Layers of Meaning" is the next art show in St. Olaf's Dittmann Center. It features eight American artists and their fascinating, modern perspectives on an ancient art form.

St. Olaf student composer featured at 9-11 tribute in Minneapolis
SEPTEMBER 11, 2003 — "Christine's Lullaby," composed by St. Olaf sophomore Carl Schroeder to honor the youngest 9-11 victim, will be featured at the 2nd annual 9-11 Tribute Concert, Our Community Remembers, tonight at 7 p.m. at the Lake Harriet Bandshell in Minneapolis. This year's program will be hosted by Amelia Santaniello of WCCO 4 Television and her husband, Frank Vascellaro of KARE 11 Television. The concert is free and open to the public. St. Olaf appoints new head of alumni and parent relations
SEPTEMBER 10, 2003 — Roz Eaton-Neeb is a dynamic addition to the leadership of St. Olaf College. A St. Olaf alumna with a Ph.D. in education, she is helping her staff members focus on what they do best. Her relationship-building skills should prove especially helpful for reaching out to parents and alumni. She is also a Minnesota native who is glad to be back home.

Oles settle for 1-1 tie with Carthage
SEPTEMBER 9, 2003 — Carthage poised to earn their first victory. From beginning to end the Oles had their way with the Carthage Redmen, passing at will and dominating possession and scoring opportunities. Unable to take advantage of a handful of opportunities in the first half, St. Olaf settled for a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods.

SEPTEMBER 9, 2003 — The St. Olaf Women?s Golf Team opened the 2003 season this weekend at Wildflower Golf Course near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. The Ole women played in the 18-hole Cobber Open on Friday, followed by the 36-hole Concordia Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the Ole golfers shot a record team score, 356, the lowest that Coach Le Ann Finger has seen in her six years as head coach.

Ole men golfers open fall season with 4th place finish in Wisconsin
SEPTEMBER 9, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's golf team competed at the Edgewood College Fall Classic Invitational over the weekend and finished in fourth place with a team score of 640. The Oles shot a 315 the first day at The Meadows of Six Mile Creek Golf Course in Waunakee, Wisconsin. The team fired a 325 on the second day of play, to finish fourth place out of eleven teams.

Slow start dooms Ole men's soccer in Whitewater
SEPTEMBER 8, 2003 — After two solid performances on the road, the St. Olaf Men?s soccer team was left wondering what could have been. The Oles played hard but dropped a close game against UW-Whitewater, 2-1 on September 6, 2003, in non-conference action.

Acclaimed French horn artist returns to St. Olaf for alumni recital and masterclass
SEPTEMBER 8, 2003 — Acclaimed French horn Virtuoso Sharon Moe, a 1964 graduate of St. Olaf College, will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, in Urness Recital Hall on campus. Accompanying Moe will be acclaimed pianist Xiayin Wang. A two-hour French horn masterclass will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, in Urness. Both events are free and open to the public.

The recital will include a Beethoven sonata, Elegy for Mippy 1 by Leonard Bernstein, The Harmonica Player by David Guion, The Lord?s Prayer by Albert Hay Malotte, City Nights by Keith Textor, Rachmaninoff?s Vocalise and Morceau de Concert by Camille Saint Saëns.

SEPTEMBER 7, 2003 — The St. Olaf football team opened the 2003 season on the road, falling to Luther College 23-10 in Decorah, Iowa.

Women's soccer starts season with 4-1 victory
SEPTEMBER 5, 2003 — A victory over Luther College was something that the seniors on this year?s St. Olaf women?s soccer team had never done before they walked onto Rolf Melby Field on Friday, August 29th. After an early goal by Luther, the Oles were immediately placed in a situation where they had to come from behind but that?s exactly what they did winning the game 4-1.

St. Olaf to host Carleton in first ever "Cereal Bowl"
SEPTEMBER 5, 2003 — One of the nation?s oldest rivalries in college football will continue Saturday, Sept. 13, when St. Olaf College and Carleton College compete in their annual contest. This year?s event is being dubbed the Cereal Bowl in honor of Malt-O-Meal Co. participation. The hot and cold cereal manufacturer, which has a plant in Northfield, will donate cereal to all attendees. The game will be played at St. Olaf?s Manitou Field in Northfield at 1 p.m.

Men's Soccer settle for 0-0 tie in season opener
SEPTEMBER 5, 2003 — The Ole men?s soccer team kicked off their 2003 season at home against Luther College on Saturday. Luther College, a team with NCAA National Tournament appearance last season, was the first of 8 extremely tough non-conference opponents for the Oles this season. The Ole men dominated, but had to settle for a 0-0 tie in the opening game of the season.

Longtime college football rivals to meet in Cereal Bowl
SEPTEMBER 2, 2003 — The 84-year-old football rivalry between neighboring St. Olaf and Carleton colleges will see a new element this year when Northfield's Malt-O-Meal Co. pitches in to help create the first Cereal Bowl on Saturday, Sept. 13. Free Toasty-O's and the like will be handed out to fans, and the winning team will continue its tradition of marching downtown to Bridge Square. The 1 p.m. game will be played at Manitou Field at St. Olaf.
