First-year student named national Equestrian of the Year
DECEMBER 31, 2002 — Hillary Hoffman, 18, a first-year student at St. Olaf from Hastings, Minn., has been named the 2002 U.S.A. Junior Equestrian of the Year. Her award, called the Meredith Memorial Trophy, will be presented in mid-January in Lexington, Ken., at the U.S.A. Equestrian Annual Meeting. Hoffman has won numerous awards, including every reining/stock seat equitation class for which she's been eligible as a youth rider. This is her third nomination for U.S.A. Junior Equestrian of the Year.

St. Olaf Band to mark century of touring with premiere of works by women composers
DECEMBER 30, 2002 — Works by noted Minnesota composers Libby Larsen and Mary Ellen Childs will be featured on the St. Olaf Band's "Centennial Tour" of the Midwest and New York City this winter.

2001 Christmas Festival concert to re-run on Twin Cities Public Television
DECEMBER 24, 2002 — If you missed it last year, you have another chance to see the Twin Cities Public Television production of the 2001 St. Olaf Christmas Festival concert, Christmas at St. Olaf. DECEMBER 20, 2002 — Matt Schlenker had his fifth career double-double coralling 15 points and 13 rebounds as St. Olaf downed Crown College 81-66 Friday night at Skoglund Athletic Center.

Women's hockey shuts out Hamline
DECEMBER 13, 2002 — On Tuesday, December 10, the St. Olaf women's hockey team matched up against the Hamline Pipers at the Coliseum in St. Paul. After losing to the Pipers earlier in the season, the Oles put in 5 goals on a total of 57 shots on goal to win 5-0.

An evening of jazz with St. Olaf music faculty
DECEMBER 12, 2002 — St. Olaf jazz faculty will offer an evening of great entertainment tonight at 9 p.m. in the Pause. Featured performers are Marty Hodel on trumpet, Scott Kallestad on saxophone, Kevin Clements on bass, Eric Hanson on drums, Dave Hagedorn on vibes and Keith McCutchen on piano.

DECEMBER 12, 2002 — The St Olaf wresting team met the Cornell College wrestling team in Iowa Wednesday, December 11 at 7:00 pm for a dual meet. To reduce travel time, both schools met in New Hampton, Iowa at the high school for the match. The Oles defeated Cornell 31-24 in an exciting match-up.

DECEMBER 12, 2002 — While the Oles once again improved their offensive effort, they were unable to come up with a win against Carleton Knights, and slipped 78-64.

DECEMBER 11, 2002 — Kevin Jaunich scored 18 points, going 8-for-10 from the field, in the Oles 75-72 overtime win over Carleton Wednesday night at Skoglund Athletic Center.

String chamber music recital features music by Brahms and Beethoven
DECEMBER 11, 2002 — At 8:15 p.m. in Studio A of the Hector Skifter Radio Building, an eight-member student string chamber ensemble will play the music of Mendelssohn, Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Beethoven.

Men's hockey falls to Northland
DECEMBER 11, 2002 — In a game the Oles felt they should have won, the men's hockey team fell to the Northland Lumberjacks 4-2, giving the Oles their first loss at home thus far in the season.

Scandinavian heritage celebrated with a Norwegian Christmas service
DECEMBER 10, 2002 — A Norwegian Christmas service will feature Norwegian Christmas hymns, prayers, the Christmas Gospel, and two Norwegian students describing their Christmas traditions during chapel at 11:10 a.m. The Norwegian Christmas Choir and the Lars Skjervheim Spelemannslag, led by music faculty member Andrea Een, will also perform during the service.

Oles fall to Gusties
DECEMBER 10, 2002 — The St. Olaf men's basketball team shot just 30.1 percent from the field in a 77-63 loss to Gustavus in St. Peter Monday night. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak and was the first MIAC loss for the Oles (5-2, 2-1).

Women's Basketball battles undefeated Gustavus
DECEMBER 10, 2002 — The St. Olaf Women?s Basketball team hosted undefeated Gustavus Adolphus College on Monday, Nov. 7. The Gusties experienced backcourt and tough inside game proved to be too much for the home team, with the final score being 73-56.

A visiting Japanese ensemble shares its music and rituals with the community
DECEMBER 9, 2002 — Taiko, traditional Japanese ensemble drumming, was part of daily life and rituals in the earliest Japanese communities. It has become a dynamic performance art form. Mu Daiko, a taiko group from Theater Mu in Minneapolis, will give a free demonstration and instruction in Japanese taiko drumming in Urness Recital Hall at 9 a.m. and a performance in The Pause in Buntrock Commons at 7 p.m. Tickets ($5) for the performance are available at the door. Mu Daiko appears in several Southern Theater productions and in a family concert with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in early December.

Women's hockey skates to 3-3 tie
DECEMBER 9, 2002 — The St. Olaf women's hockey team traveled to St. Cloud to play game Two of the two game series with the College of Saint Benedict, which ended in a 3-3 tie.

Women's basketball slip to Cardinals
DECEMBER 9, 2002 — The St. Olaf women's basketball team struggled offensively Saturday, leading to a 60-44 loss against Saint Mary's University.

Student body at St. Olaf becoming increasingly diverse
DECEMBER 9, 2002 — The youngest of 10 children, and one of only three who finished high school, Lee Vang, a Hmong woman who was born in Thailand, is among many students on campus who enlarges the pool of what was once considered a "typical" St. Olaf student.

German Advent service to include readings, music and more
DECEMBER 9, 2002 — Be sure to come to Boe Memorial Chapel this morning at 10:10 a.m. for a German Advent service, observed at St. Olaf for over 40 years. This special chapel service will feature performances by a German choir comprised of St. Olaf students and faculty members. Readings about German Christmas customs will be presented by German exchange students.

Exhibit honoring architect, alum Ed Sovik on display
DECEMBER 8, 2002 — An exhibit featuring the work of architect Edward Anders Sovik runs through Dec. 8 in Dittmann Center, Flaten Art Museum. Founder and chairman of the architectural firm now known as SMSQ Architects in Northfield, Minn., Sovik led his firm in the design and renovation of several hundred churches and other building projects across the country before his retirement in 1994. A St. Olaf College graduate (1939) and distinguished alumnus who designed several of the college?s buildings, Sovik?s distinctive style has modernist roots, a Scandinavian influence and durability. The exhibition includes sketches, videos featuring Sovik, photos of his buildings and more.

Book signings among campus events during Christmas Fest
DECEMBER 8, 2002 — In conjunction with the 2002 Christmas Festival, the St. Olaf Bookstore has invited local and regional authors to campus for book discussions and signings. St. Olaf writer-in-residence and English professor Jim Heynen will sign his books The Boys? House and Cosmo Coyote and William the Nice today (Friday) from 6 to 7 p.m. Author Joan Oliver Goldsmith will sign How Can We Keep From Singing, Music and the Passionate Life on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 6 to 7 p.m. Author Lise Lunge-Larsen will sign The Race of the Birkebeiners and The Troll With No Heart in His Body and Other Tales of Trolls From Norway on Sunday, Dec. 8 from 2 to 3 p.m. On Dec. 8, the St. Olaf Band will make its annual contribution to the Sunday worship service at 10:30 a.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel.

Traditional Norwegian meals available during Christmas Fest
DECEMBER 8, 2002 — Visitors to St. Olaf College may take part in a number of other special events during the annual Christmas Festival, including a traditional Scandinavian Christmas smørgasbord meal. Bon Appetit will serve traditional Norwegian meals during the Scandinavian Christmas Smørgasbord. The smørgasbord will be served in the Black and Gold Ballroom of Buntrock Commons from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6; from 3:30 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6; and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. The price is $17.75 per person. The Scandinavian buffet also will be served (along with traditional dining hall fare) in Stav Hall of Buntrock Commons from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-7, and from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. The price is $13.50 per person.

Men's basketball beats SMU for fourth straight
DECEMBER 7, 2002 — The St. Olaf men's basketball team won their fourth straight game, defeating Saint Mary's 79-69 Saturday in Winona, Minn. Four players reached double figures for the Oles (5-1, 2-0) in the victory.

It's a Tuba Christmas offering!
DECEMBER 7, 2002 — Tuba and euphonium players, both St. Olaf student-musicians and musicians from the Northfield community, will gather in Buntrock Commons Crossroads at 3 p.m. for a fun afternoon of rehearsing and concertizing. The tuba concert is free and open to all!

Marketing, 'making lists' more important to private colleges
DECEMBER 6, 2002 — St. Olaf College long has prided itself on placing among the top colleges and universities for the percentage and sheer number of its students who study abroad. So when the Chronicle of Higher Education left the college off its recent list of top baccalaureate institutions, the oversight -- later corrected -- had a major effect.

Lilly Endowment to help prepare students for lives of worth and service
DECEMBER 6, 2002 — A nearly $2 million grant to St. Olaf College by the Lilly Endowment -- one of three such grants given to colleges and universities in Minnesota -- will help sustain and expand efforts to prepare a new generation of leaders for useful roles in church and society through mentoring, additional courses and hands-on work.

Christmas Fest signals beginning of holiday season
DECEMBER 6, 2002 — The 91st annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival continues tonight in Skoglund Center Auditorium and runs through Sunday, Dec. 8. The theme for the 2002 festival is "Ris?n With Healing in His Wings." As the St. Olaf Orchestra sounds its first notes and the massed St. Olaf choirs sing timeless melodies that offer messages of peace and healing, everyone involved in the creation of the Christmas Festival hope the music and message will inspire and uplift. The Collegiate Chorale offers songs of peace and comfort
DECEMBER 6, 2002 — Collegiate Chorale, a women?s ensemble of students, faculty and staff directed by AntonArmstrong, will sing in Boe Memorial Chapel this morning at 10:10 a.m. The ensemble will offer songs of peace, comfort and reconciliation, ranging from "Torah Orah," a Hebrew folk song, and Hadyn?s "Dona Nobis Pacem" to "Let There Be Peace on Earth" and "Hope for Resolution," a celebration of diversity which intertwines a European chant melody and an anti-apartheid song in Zulu from South Africa.

Oles fall to Luther
DECEMBER 2, 2002 — The St. Olaf women's basketball team lost 57-41 to Luther College on Tuesday, November 26. Sara Erickson (Sr, Cambridge, Minn.) led the Oles with 16 points, and Jill Johnson (Jr, Butterfield, Minn.) added ten.

Oles wrestle to tough losses in Augustana Duals
DECEMBER 2, 2002 — The St. Olaf wrestling team competed in the Augustana Duals, losing tough matches to Augustana, William Penn, and Upper Iowa University

Swimming and diving team competes with nation's best
DECEMBER 2, 2002 — The men's and women's swimming and diving team participated in the Minnesota Invitational this past November 22nd-24th. The annual meet features Division I programs from across the country, and St. Olaf was one of three Division III programs invited to compete.

Oles win third straight
DECEMBER 2, 2002 — St. Olaf scored the first 22 points of the second half on the way to a 84-71 win over Northwestern in a non-conference game Monday night in St. Paul. Tim Nelson and Mike Ludwig had 19 points each to lead the Oles.
