Companydance will celebrate new dance space with concert of original, reconstructed works APRIL 30, 2002 — The official opening of the Dittmann Center for Art and Dance means St. Olaf dancers and audiences will enjoy rehearsal and performance spaces like they've never had before. That's had an influence on the spring concert by Companydance, which this year has more vigor and variety than ever. Tomter and Gimse, renowned musicians from Norway, will perform at St. Olaf on May 8 APRIL 30, 2002 — When two of Norway's most well-known and well-traveled musicians embark on a U.S. tour, where else would they stop but St. Olaf College -- an institution with strong Norwegian roots and a strong program in music performance and education. Violist Lars Anders Tomter and pianist Havard Gimse will perform at the college May 8. Award-winning poets to read, sign books at St. Olaf APRIL 30, 2002 — Award-winning Minnesota poets Ted Genoways and John Minczeski will read from and sign copies of their new books, Bullroarer: A Sequence and Circle Routes, respectively, on Tuesday, April 30, at St. Olaf College.The reading, free and open to the public, will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Viking Theater in Buntrock Commons. St. Olaf Fastpitch team drops two to Auggies APRIL 29, 2002 — The St. Olaf fastpitch team dropped two conference games to Augsburg College on Friday, April 26. The scores were 9-0 and 8-3. St. Olaf to dedicate Dittmann Center during weekend that weaves together art and life APRIL 29, 2002 — The new Dittmann Center is an architectural wonder, a building made over from the former student center at St. Olaf College. It's an artistic wonder as well -- as the public will see during dedication events May 3-5 -- a place that weaves together "art" and "life" by showcasing the visual arts and dance. Manitou Singers and Viking Chorus to perform joint concert at St. Olaf on Sunday APRIL 28, 2002 — The Manitou Singers and the Viking Chorus, both comprised of first-year students at St. Olaf College, will perform their spring concert at Boe Memorial Chapel on Sunday, April 28. Highlighting the performance will be several pieces by St. Olaf College faculty members, including Peter Hamlin and Tom Schnauber. The concert, at 7:30 p.m., is free and open to the public. Manitou Singers, Viking Chorus to perform concert at Boe chapel APRIL 28, 2002 — The Manitou Singers and the Viking Chorus, both comprised of first-year students at St. Olaf College, will present their joint spring concert on Sunday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. at Boe Memorial Chapel on campus. Highlighting the event will be performances of pieces by St. Olaf faculty members, including Peter Hamlin and Tom Schnauber. The concert is free and open to the public. 5K 'Fun Run' open to the community this Saturday APRIL 27, 2002 — The campus recreation program at St. Olaf College is sponsoring the annual Clarence Clausen 5K Fun Run on Saturday, April 27. The event is free and open to the public. The race will start at 8 a.m. at Manitou Fieldhouse, with same-day registration available beginning at 7 a.m. Clausen, who died in 1991 at age 94, was a 1923 graduate of St. Olaf and a longtime history professor at the college. St. Olaf among first colleges in the U.S. to halt trips to Israel APRIL 25, 2002 — In the wake of increased violence in the Middle East, Hamline University in St. Paul and the University of California decided in April to halt student programs in Israel. St. Olaf College, which sends about 650 of its 3,000 students abroad to study each year, made that decision two years ago. Mathematics expert to speak Thursday on 'Erdos Magic' APRIL 25, 2002 — Joel Spencer, a professor of mathematics and computer science at the Courant Institute in New York, will give a lecture on "Erdos Magic" on Thursday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Science Center of St. Olaf College. A former collaborator with the brilliant mathematician Paul Erdos, Spencer will discuss his mentor's Probabilitic Method, Number Theory and eccentric personality. Unfortunately, the Oles lost both games, 15-4 and 10-9. Photo contest portrays student views of off-campus study APRIL 24, 2002 — The 19th annual photo contest for students who take part in domestic and international off-campus study programs is on display in Buntrock Commons. Named after Professor Emeritus of Art Mac Gimse and his wife, Jackie, the display features 35 photos from many lands. Women's tennis loses to crosstown rival Carleton APRIL 24, 2002 — The St. Olaf Women's tennis team competed against crosstown rival Carleton College yesterday April 23 at Bell Field. The Oles lost 7-2 earning one point from 3rd doubles team of Linsay Gorham (Sr. Wenatchee, Wash) and Carrie Wiersma (FY, La Crosse, Wis.) and 5th singles Jennifer Ison (Jr. Urbana, Ill.). Women's track hosts Manitou Classic APRIL 24, 2002 — The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team hosted the Manitou Classic this past weekend, bringing together over 600 women athletes from all divisions of competition. The meet proved to be a success, as many Oles achieved personal best records throughout the day. Baseball team splits doubleheader with Bethel APRIL 24, 2002 — The Ole clubbers could only manage to pull out a split against the Bethel Royals. After winning the first game 11-1, the Oles dropped the second one 5-3. Ole fastpitch splits with Wildcats APRIL 24, 2002 — The St. Olaf College fastpitch team traveled to St. Paul to take on the College of St. Catherine's on April 23rd. The Oles won the first game 4-3 and lost the second 6-1. Daymont named Minnesota United States Track and Field Women's Athlete of the Month APRIL 24, 2002 — St. Olaf College's junior Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) was named Minnesota USTF Women's Athlete of the Month thanks to her multiple national qualifying times. St. Olaf celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month with concerts by students and guests APRIL 23, 2002 — Jazz concerts are more in demand at St. Olaf College, an institution generally known for its rich tradition of choral and orchestral music. Osiecki wins Distinguished Service Award for coaching hockey APRIL 23, 2002 — Women's Hockey Coach Tom Osiecki has recently been awarded the Lake Conference Distinguished Service to Students and Programs award for his continued contribution to hockey and women's athletics in the State of Minnesota. Men's Tennis continues winning ways APRIL 22, 2002 — The Ole men continue to do well in conference play. They defeated the Macalester Scots 7-2 this past Saturday. It was a good competitve match with hard fought points and games. Nature tour, night under the stars highlight Earth Week events APRIL 22, 2002 — St. Olaf will celebrate the 32nd annual Earth Day on Monday, April 22, with a week's worth of "Earth Week" events. On Earth Day itself, a tour of the college's natural lands will begin at 1:30 p.m. by the Big Wetland next to the Skoglund Center construction site. That evening, at 9:30 p.m., Physics Professor Amy Kolan will talk about various constellations. Bring a flashlight, binoculars, blanket and munchies for a "stellar time." Oles end losing streak APRIL 22, 2002 — The St. Olaf softball team, ended an 7 game losing streak on Saturday, when they split with the College of St. Benedicts. The St. Bens Blazers beat the Oles 11-0 in the first game, then the Oles came back and won the second, 4-1. Women's Tennis goes 1-1 over weekend APRIL 22, 2002 — The Ole women defeated Macalester 6-3 and lost to Gustavus 8-1 in two very hardfhout matches. This was the third conference win for the Ole women and brought their record to 3-5. Mens Baseball splits with Saint Marys APRIL 22, 2002 — On Saturday, the Oles split their conference twinbill with the Saint Mary's Cardinals, dropping the first game 8-2 and winning the second 10-3. With the split, the Oles moved to 10-2 in conference play and held onto their one game lead over St. Thomas. St. Olaf grad fights for gender equity at American Express APRIL 21, 2002 — Two women recently launched a class-action lawsuit against American Express Financial Advisors, claiming gender discrimination. The result was a $31 million settlement that will benefit up to 4,000 current and former employees. One of the women, Lois Wisocky, earned a bachelor's degree in economics from St. Olaf in 1997. St. Olaf Band to perform Cathedral Concert on Sunday APRIL 21, 2002 — The 28th annual Cathedral Concert of the St. Olaf Band will be held Sunday, April 21, 3:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Brighton. St. Olaf College places 17th nationally, leads MIAC schools in Sears Cup APRIL 21, 2002 — Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) schools take pride in putting the "student" first in the term "student-athlete." Athletics are still important, however, at MIAC schools -- as evidenced by the strong showing of St. Olaf and others in the Sears Directors' Cup national standings. Seniors, recent graduates in social work earn acceptance to prestigious graduate schools APRIL 20, 2002 — It's not common for social work majors to go straight from college to graduate school, says Mary Carlsen, director of the St. Olaf social work program. But that's exactly what three seniors are doing -- having won a spot in the esteemed programs at Columbia University in New York and Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Two classics students place in Maurine Dallas Watkins Contests APRIL 20, 2002 — Sarah Beaver, a junior from Poway, Calif., and Hilary Lehmann, a sophomore from Mission Hill, S.D., have won first- and third-place prizes, respectively, for Greek translation in the Maurine Dallas Watkins Contests, which is sponsored by Eta Sigma Phi, the national classics honor society for college students. Beaver, who is majoring in classics, ancient studies and Spanish, won first place for Biblical Greek translation. Lehmann, who is majoring in classics and English, won third place for classical Greek translation. St. Olaf has had at least one winner in the prestigious contest every year since 1980. Ole Baseball on top of MIAC standings APRIL 19, 2002 — On Wednesday, April 18, the St. Olaf Baseball team swept the visiting St. Thomas Tommies in a conference doubleheader, winning 2-1 and 5-1. The win moved the Oles into sole possession of first place in the MIAC conference and upped their overall record to 16-8. Early music singers, musicians to perform Friday APRIL 19, 2002 — The St. Olaf Collegium Musicum and Early Music Singers will perform their spring concert, "Music From Germany, 1100-1700," at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19 in Urness Recital Hall. The program includes music by Hildegard of Bingen, Senfl and Schutz. The Collegium Musicum performs on instruments of the period: medieval vielle, Renaissance viols, recorders, sackbuts, crumhorns and cornetts. The Early Music Singers is an ensemble of 14 select voices that performs music of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras. Both groups are directed by Gerald Hoekstra. The concert is free and open to the public. St. Olaf Choir receives its first international recording contract APRIL 19, 2002 — The St. Olaf Choir is undertaking a major recording project with Linn Records of London, England. Works by Charles Ives were recorded in mid-April at Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie, Minn. The recording features The Celestial Country, a cantata representing Ives' early romantic compositional period, and excerpts from his collection of 140 songs. The works will be released on a single CD next December both in Europe and the United States. The St. Olaf Choir is directed by Anton Armstrong. St. Olaf College leads MIAC schools in Sears Cup APRIL 19, 2002 — St. Olaf College is leading the MIAC tied for 17th place with 298 points in the 2001-02 Division III Sears Director's Cup Final. . Points are awarded on each of the institution's finish in up to 20 sports. Christian Explainers to bring South African gospel to St. Olaf APRIL 19, 2002 — Beloved in their native South Africa, the Christian Explainers have recorded three albums and won numerous awards in their native Cape Town. The gospel group will perform at Boe Memorial Chapel on Friday, April 19, at 6:30 p.m. A reception follows the concert, which is free and open to the public. St. Olaf Band to continue Cathedral Concert tradition in New Brighton this Sunday APRIL 17, 2002 — The St. Olaf Band will perform its 28th annual Cathedral Concert this Sunday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Brighton, Minn. The annual concert emulates a 1974 performance the band gave in the bombed ruins of Coventry Cathedral in England. St. Olaf Fastpitch falls to Bethel APRIL 17, 2002 — St. Olaf's fastpitch team has lost their last four games. The Bethel College Royals handed the Oles 7-4 and 4-3 losses on Tuesday, April 16th. St. Olaf Baseball sweeps Hamline APRIL 17, 2002 — On Tuesday, the St. Olaf Baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep against the Hamline Pipers. The 7-4 and 10-5 victories improved the Oles conference record to 7-1 leading into Wednesday's showdown with the first place Tommies. Track and Field fares well at Wartburg Select Meet APRIL 17, 2002 — Traveling across the border to Waverly Iowa, the St. Olaf women?s team competed in ideal conditions at the Wartburg Select Meet on April 13th. Throughout the day, a new school record was set along with two athletes provisionally qualifying for nationals. Christian band Sonic Flood to perform Wednesday at the Pause APRIL 17, 2002 — With a Grammy nomination, two albums to their credit and several No. 1 songs, Sonic Flood is succeeding at spreading its mission -- "to create music that will usher people into the presence of God." The group will perform Wednesday, April 17, at the Pause in Buntrock Commons. Tickets are free for college students and $10 for others; they will be sold starting at 5:30 p.m. Doors open at 6. Think big, work small: Scientists to present exciting discoveries in nanoscience May 3 APRIL 17, 2002 — The third annual science symposium at St. Olaf College will present small ways to solve big social problems, including environmental issues, as nationally known scientists gather to present their research on nanoscience. St. Paul student who 'beat the odds' to attend St. Olaf this fall APRIL 16, 2002 — Lily Moua, a senior at Arlington High School in St. Paul, is the sixth of 12 children of Hmong parents who speak no English -- and who initially objected to her school-related activities. Moua is among five Twin Cities high school seniors profiled in the Star Tribune (Minneapolis) for receiving a "Beat the Odds" award from the Children's Defense Fund-Minnesota. She'll attend St. Olaf College this fall. Softball team drops two non-conference games to Norse APRIL 16, 2002 — The St. Olaf women's Softball team took on Luther college in a non-conference match-up. The Oles couldn't get a their game going and lost 5-1 and 3-1. Oles split against the Scots APRIL 16, 2002 — One day after pulling out a 5-2 come from behind victory, the baseball team was handed their first home loss in three seasons, a 20-3 defeat by the Macalaster Scots. Ole women beat Saint Mary's in first home outdoor match APRIL 15, 2002 — The women's tennis team came away with their second win of the season against Saint Mary?s on Saturday, April 13. The match was the first outdoor match of the season played at St. Olaf?s Carlson tennis courts. The final score of the match was 6-3. Oles drop two to Tommies, then bounce back and beat Scots APRIL 15, 2002 — The St. Olaf Fastpitch team took on the nationally ranked Univeristy of St. Thomas on Friday. Despite their valiant effort, the oles fell 6-0 and 3-0. On Saturday the Oles traveled to St. Paul to take on Macalester College. It was there that the Oles took home their first two conference wins. St. Olaf men's tennis team falls to St. Cloud State APRIL 15, 2002 — On Friday, April 12th, the St. Olaf men's team played their first outdoor home tennis match versus Division II St. Cloud State University. They lost 6-1, but the score does not reflect the competiveness of the match. St. Olaf students raise money for 9/11 relief fund in New York APRIL 14, 2002 — The families of firefighters and medical personnel who lost their lives in New York City on Sept. 11 will get $4,000 in aid, thanks to the Tragedy Relief Program founded by St. Olaf College students in the wake of the terrorist attack. Spinning a yarn with St. Olaf tennis coach Scott Nesbit APRIL 13, 2002 — Knitting, tennis and spirituality play a big role in the life of St. Olaf tennis coach Scott Nesbit, who talked with USA Weekend in April 2002 about how his women's tennis team inspired him to start knitting prayer shawls. Three professors win release time for 2002-03 academic year APRIL 13, 2002 — Several professors at St. Olaf have won released-time grant awards for 2002-03: Mark Allister, associate professor of English and Environmental Studies, is editing Men and Nature: New Perspectives on Masculinity and the Natural World, a collection of essays exploring society's constructs of nature and masculinity. Karen Cherewatuk, associate professor of English, will complete a book manuscript tentatively titled Marriage in Malory, a project that "seeks to uncover in Sir Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur, completed in 1469, the author's and original audience's attitudes toward marriage, adultery and sexual relations." Paul Jackson, assistant professor of chemistry, will complete lab research to better understand the "separations process of reversed-phase liquid chromatography and applying that understanding to the development of environmental analysis methods." Womens track start spring season APRIL 11, 2002 — The St. Olaf Women?s Track and Field team began their outdoor season this past weekend at the Hamline Invitational. Despite the weather, the women proved that they have all the components of a strong track and field team. Religion professor affirms equality of all people under God APRIL 11, 2002 — St. Olaf Professor of Religion Anantanand Rambachan believes Hindu violence against Muslims can't be justified or watched in silence, according to his opinion piece in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, published in March 2002. Ole baseball sweeps Concordia APRIL 10, 2002 — On Tuesday, the Oles improved their conference record to 4-0 with a doubleheader sweep over the Concordia Cobbers. The Oles pulled out a 3-2 comeback win in the first game and a 8-0 victory in the second. Oles sweep the Gusties APRIL 10, 2002 — On Monday, the baseball team opened the 2002 conference season with a doubleheader sweep over Gustavus. In their first home games of the season, the Oles shut out Gustavus 9-0 and 4-0. Cindy Book featured in book on successful college coaches APRIL 10, 2002 — Cindy Book, director of athletics and chair of the athletics department at St. Olaf College, was featured recently in the book 6 Psychological Factors for Success: America's Most Successful Athletic Coaches Reveal the Path to Competitive Excellence, by Stephen J. Brennan, Ph.D. The book, released by Peak Performance Publishing, features 25 college coaches discussing their coaching philosophy on six factors for athletic success: motivation, team cohesion, discipline, mental toughness, mental preparation and communication. Fastpitch team loses to nationally ranked St. Mary's APRIL 10, 2002 — The St. Olaf fastpitch team traveled to Winona to take on number two nationally ranked St. Mary's University for their first conference games. The Oles played tough, but ultimately it was errors that hurt them in both losses, 4-2 and 10-2. Dean and Provost James Pence chairing academic group APRIL 10, 2002 — James Pence, dean and provost of St. Olaf College, has been named chairman of the American Conference of Academic Deans (ACAD). As chair, Pence will lead two meetings a year of the 16-person ACAD board, comprised of former and current vice presidents for academic affairs, provosts, deans and associate deans from colleges and universities throughout the United States. The ACAD currently has 600 members. St. Olaf alum Gretchen Morgenson wins Pulitzer Prize for beat reporting at the New York Times APRIL 9, 2002 — Two St. Olaf alumnae won Pulitzer Prizes for their work at the New York Times, the Pulitzer Prize Board announced April 8. Both Gretchen Morgenson and Carla Baranauckas majored in English at the college and graduated in the late 1970s. St. Olaf men's tennis ends week with two wins, one loss APRIL 8, 2002 — The men's tennis team played three matches the first week of April. They started out with a 7-2 victory over conference opponent, St. Johns, followed by another win over Ripon (6-1) and then fell short to UW-LaCrosse (3-4). St. Olaf again named a top producer of Peace Corps volunteers serving overseas APRIL 8, 2002 — With its values-based mission and strong emphasis on study abroad, St. Olaf has long seen a high percentage of its graduates join the Peace Corps. This year the college ranks third in the nation for the number of its graduates serving in the Peace Corps overseas. Ole women come up with first win versus St. Ben's APRIL 8, 2002 — The St Olaf Women?s Tennis team came up with their first win of the season versus the College of Saint Benedict on Friday, April 5th, 2002 at the Owatonna Indoor Tennis Center. The final score was 6-3. Percussionist and inventor Ron George to perform, conduct residency at St. Olaf APRIL 5, 2002 — Nationally known percussionist Ron George is bringing an instrument of his creation -- one of seven he has invented -- and an entirely unique sound to St. Olaf starting April 8. He'll also be conducting workshops in the Northfield and Minneapolis schools. Fastpitch team comes home happy APRIL 3, 2002 — The Ole Fastpitch kicked off their season March 23rd-March 28th at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Florida. The Oles improved one game upon last year's spring training record with a 5-3 overall finish for the week. Tennis team returns after spring trip APRIL 2, 2002 — The men's tennis team began play on Friday, March 22nd with the four team Jack Swartz Invitational in Deerfield, IL. The second part of the trip took place in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Oles went 3-4 with many extremely close matches. Ole women compete at Nationals APRIL 2, 2002 — Katie Detwiler (FY, Fort Atkinson, Wisc.) and Katie Brentz (FY, Arden Hills, Minn.) traveled to Ohio to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championships, which were held at the University of Miami at Ohio. Both women competed with a high level of intensity which is difficult to do at a post-season meet like nationals. Korteum breaks national record APRIL 2, 2002 — Gabe Korteum (Sr, Andover, Minn.) won the one meter competition at the NCAA championships and also shattered the NCAA Division III record in the process. Five other Oles turned in All-American Honorable Mention performances as well. |
