Ole Fastpitch Drops Doubleheader to Macalester
APRIL 30, 2001 — The Ole fastpitch team fell to Macalester College in Saturday?s MIAC action, 3-1 and 5-4. With the bases loaded, two outs and the game tied 1-1 in the sixth inning; the Scots picked up two runs to secure a 3-1 win in the first game.

Mens Tennis Defeats University of St. Thomas
APRIL 30, 2001 — After suffering a close loss to Division II opponent Minnesota State University earlier in the week, the St. Olaf men's tennis team took on the University of St. Thomas. The Oles lost a heartbreaker of a match the previous year to the Tommies 3-4 in a very emotional match. Knowing that the match was very important to their playoff hopes, the Oles came prepared.

Judy Stromayer Named Sports Information Specialist
APRIL 30, 2001 — Judy Stromayer will become the Sports Information Specialist at St. Olaf College. Stromayer will continue her role as coordinator of outdoor recreation and will teach in the physical education department as well.

Ole Baseball Dominates Luther College
APRIL 30, 2001 — The Oles came out on top Sunday, April 29 with a sweep over the Luther Norse. The games served as the final doubleheader against the Oles for Luther's long-standing coach, Paul Solberg, who is in his final season as the head coach. The afternoon games were followed by a barbecue put on for both teams by the parents.

St. Olaf Womens Tennis downs Nebraska Wesleyan
APRIL 30, 2001 — The St. Olaf women?s tennis played another great match against visiting Nebraska Wesleyan. The Oles took the match 6-3 and upped their record to 12-5 overall.

Womens Track and Field Third at Macalester Invite
APRIL 30, 2001 — The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team competed at the Macalester Invite this past Saturday. Though strong winds were present throughout the day the Oles still competed well and many of the women had personal best performances. The Oles placed third in the team competition with 91.5 points.

Christopher M. Thomforde installed as St. Olaf Colleges 10th president
APRIL 29, 2001 — Christopher Meredith Thomforde was inaugurated as St. Olaf College?s 10th president in an historic and colorful academic ceremony today at the college.

St. Olaf to honor Oxford professor, administrator during annual Honors Day
APRIL 27, 2001 — The Rev. Dr. Ralph Waller is an internationally renowned theologian, a distinguished teacher and an acclaimed administrator at Oxford University in Great Britain. On Friday, May 4, he will become an alumnus of St. Olaf College, when the college presents him with an honorary doctor of humane letters degree in recognition of his many services to St. Olaf students and faculty as head of Oxford?s Harris Manchester College.

Ole Fastpitch Loses, Ties against Pipers
APRIL 27, 2001 — The St. Olaf College women?s fastpitch team picked up a loss and a tie in a home doubleheader against the Hamline University Pipers. The Oles lost the first game in an 11-7 slugfest. The second game returned to a trend as fans saw their third extra inning game in as many doubleheaders at Mabel Shirley field and darkness forced an end to a 4-4 ballgame after nine innings.

Ole Baseball Sweeps Auggies
APRIL 27, 2001 — The Oles collected two wins against the Augsburg Auggies when they combined for 23 runs and 25 hits in the double-header.

St. Olaf Women's Tennis 1-1 at Mankato Indoor Tournament
APRIL 27, 2001 — The St. Olaf Women's tennis team participated in the Mankato indoor tournament on April 21. The Oles dropped their first match to the University of North Dakota, and took home a win over Minnesota State-Mankato.

Oles Take Two from the Scots
APRIL 25, 2001 — After coming off two tough losses this past weekend, the St. Olaf baseball team fired back strong winning both games of the double-header versus Macalester College. The Oles used the wind to their advantage by putting up a total of 44 runs and 11 homeruns. In game one, the Oles won 25-7, and in game two, 19-9.

St. Olaf Brass Night concert scheduled for Monday, April 30

APRIL 24, 2001 — Plautus? ancient Roman comedy Pseudolus, which inspired the modern Broadway hit A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, will be presented at St. Olaf College Friday and Saturday, April 27-28, as part of the inauguration of St. Olaf President Christopher Meredith Thomforde.

Two Tough Losses for Ole Fastpitch
APRIL 24, 2001 — The St. Olaf College women?s fastpitch team lost two tough games today to the College of St. Benedict. The Blazers won the first game 3-1, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth to down the Oles. The second game went ten innings before the Oles fell by a 4-3 score.

APRIL 23, 2001 — In Saturday?s MIAC action the Tommies struck early, scoring all of their runs in the first three innings, to take a commanding lead en route to a 6-0 win. St. Thomas (11-1) has a share of the MIAC lead with St. Mary?s University (11-1).

Music faculty member Mary Ellen Childs one of five in nation awarded residency for composers
APRIL 23, 2001 — St. Olaf College music faculty member and Minneapolis composer Mary Ellen Childs has received a "New Residencies" award from Meet the Composer Inc. The three-year residency, one of only five awarded nationally in 2001, supports partnerships among composers, professional arts institutions and community-based organizations.

Ole Men's Track and Field at Kansas Relays
APRIL 23, 2001 — The St. Olaf men's track and field team took advantage of strong competition and ideal weather last week at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence. The Oles garnered several season-best performances and one national qualifier during the four-day competition that featured many of the nation's strongest schools in each of the NCAA divisions as well as several premier junior colleges.

Manitou Track and Field Classic
APRIL 22, 2001 — The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team hosted the 7th annual Manitou Classic this past Saturday. Over 700 women athletes competed for 24 teams. The Oles placed 8th, with 45 points. The University of St. Thomas won the meet and Luther College placed second with 107 and 97.5 points respectively.

Oles Lose Two to Cardinals
APRIL 22, 2001 — The St.Mary's Cardinals handed the visiting Oles their first two losses of the conference season in a doubleheader played Saturday in Winona.

Kurt Anderson named Head Coach of Mens and Womens Soccer
APRIL 20, 2001 — NORTHFIELD, MINN ? April 19, 2001 St. Olaf College announced today that Kurt Anderson will become the head coach of its women?s soccer program in addition to his responsibilities as head coach of men?s soccer. Anderson, currently in his 12th year as men?s soccer coach and among the top 50 Division III soccer coaches in winning percentage, will oversee both programs beginning this fall.

Softball Splits against St. Kates
APRIL 19, 2001 — The St. Olaf College fastpitch team split its home doubleheader against the College of St. Catherine today. St. Kate?s overcame an early St. Olaf lead in the first game to force extra innings, but the Oles finally prevailed 5-4 in the eleventh inning. The Wildcats beat the Oles 8-3 in the second game, shortened to six innings due to darkness.

APRIL 19, 2001 — Strong pitching and well executed defensive play allowed the Oles to collect two wins against Gustavus, extending their conference win total to eight games.

St. Olaf 13th in Sears Directors' Cup
APRIL 19, 2001 — St. Olaf College is ranked 13th in Division III for the Sears Directors? Cup. St. Olaf is the only MIAC school to make the top 25.

APRIL 19, 2001 — Three St. Olaf College jazz bands and the Percussion Ensemble will perform their annual spring concerts Thursday, April 26, Friday, April 27, and Sunday, April 29, as part of the inauguration of new St. Olaf President Christopher Meredith Thomforde.

LaManna Named MIAC Player of the Week
APRIL 18, 2001 — St. Olaf junior catcher Dan LaManna (South St. Paul, Minn.) led St. Olaf to an 8-0 record last week, including six conference wins. In conference play, LaManna was 12-21 (.571) with six runs scored, 14 RBI and five doubles. LaManna slugged .810 for the week and fielded 1.000 behind the plate.

APRIL 18, 2001 — Warm weather welcomed the Oles for their home opener against the Bethel College Royals. The Oles received solid contributions from both offensive and defensive sides and were able to complete the two game sweep. With the victories, the Oles remained undefeated since their return to Minnesota and are in sole possession of first place in the MIAC standings.

APRIL 17, 2001 — St. Olaf and Carleton college students and professors and other Northfield residents learned how to be better teachers of William Shakespeare works, saw a production of the Shakespeare comedy Twelfth Night and heard papers about Shakespeare at a recent two-day colloquium focusing on history?s most famous playwright.

APRIL 11, 2001 — The Oles extended their winning streak to six games with their sweep over the Hamline Pipers. While the Oles captured a 5-0 victory in the opener, the offense pounded out fourteen hits enroute to a 17-4 win in the second game.

Ole Baseball Comes from Behind to Top UW-River Falls
APRIL 10, 2001 — After opening their conference season on Sunday with two wins against Carleton, the Oles continued their winning ways with a sweep of UW-River Falls in two tightly contested non-conference games. Junior Co-Captain Brian Sprout (Lake City, Minn.) dominated Falcon pitching and led the offensive attack in the opener by knocking in six runs enroute to an 8-4 victory. In the second game, the Ole bats remained dormant until the final stanza when Kevin Quame's (Jr., Benson, Minn.) bases loaded double brought in three runs and gave the Oles the 5-3 come-from-behind win.

Ole Men's Tennis Upended by Gustavus
APRIL 10, 2001 — St. Olaf Men's tennis team traveled to Rochester to play a "home" match last Saturday, April 7th, to host the defending MIAC champion Gustavus Adolphus. Due to the unpredictable Minnesota spring weather, the match was held indoors, which did not help the Oles in their quest to knock off the defending champs.

Concert Band Cavalcade scheduled April 20 at Normandale Community College, Bloomington
APRIL 10, 2001 — The Minnesota Symphonic Winds, a Twin Cities concert band, and the Norseman Band of St. Olaf College will appear together in a first-ever collaboration on Friday, April 20, at Normandale Community College.

Mens Track and Field 7th at Norse Relays
APRIL 9, 2001 — Only one week after an impressive season-opening performance in Atlanta, the St. Olaf men's track and field team stumbled in Saturday's Norse Relays, hosted by Luther College. The Oles felt their depth would boost their standing in the relay-dominated meet, but despite a few outstanding performances they could muster only a seventh-place finish in the fourteen-team field.

APRIL 9, 2001 — We apologize for the editorial error announcing the passing of Russell E. Adamson ?51 as Russell E. Anderson. Russell E. Adamson starred in basketball, football and baseball. He was captain and an All-MIAC selection in all three sports. Adamson was a member of the Hall of Fame.

Oles Dominate Carleton in MIAC Baseball Opener
APRIL 9, 2001 — In the opening series of the 2001 MIAC season for St. Olaf, the Oles came out hot beating the Carleton Knights 14-0 in the first game and 11-0 in the second. Because of recent warm weather and a mixture of rain, the Cannon River covered Carleton?s field and forced Sunday's game to be played in Dundas.

Womens All-Lutheran Track and Field Meet at Augustana
APRIL 9, 2001 — The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field Team competed in the All-Lutheran Track and Field meet hosted by Augustana in Sioux Falls, South Dakota this past Saturday. Despite the incredibly windy conditions the Oles had strong performances throughout the meet.

Fastpitch Falls in Doubleheader to Gustavus
APRIL 9, 2001 — The Oles opened MIAC play falling to Gustavus by scores of 8-5 and 2-1 (nine innings). The Oles held the lead in the first game until the fifth inning, when the Gusties rallied from a 5-4 deficit, and four unearned runs, to claim an 8-5 win.

APRIL 6, 2001 — Jessica Ward, a senior physics major at St. Olaf College, is one of 70 college students who presented results of her scientific research during the annual "Undergraduate Research Posters on the Hill" event March 29 in Washington, D.C.

A tragic loss, and the question that follows
APRIL 5, 2001 — The chapel service was full on March 26. The pastor noted that for many students, the recent spring break was not a time of relaxation, but a time of grief and pain. Others returned to St. Olaf in ignorance, only to discover that three of their classmates were dead. Five friends had been headed to New Orleans when their vehicle was hit by a drunken driver traveling on the wrong side of the highway. Only two survived.
