Melius Piano Trio to perform recital Tuesday, April 17, at St. Olaf College
MARCH 29, 2001 — The Melius Piano Trio ? three St. Olaf College music faculty members on violin, cello and piano ? will perform a recital on Tuesday, April 17, at the college.

Memorial service for three St. Olaf College students will be held Wednesday, April 4
MARCH 28, 2001 — A memorial service to mourn the loss of three St. Olaf College students who were killed last week in a car accident is scheduled for Wednesday, April 4, at the college.

Ole Baseball Opens Season
MARCH 27, 2001 — The St.Olaf Baseball team traveled south to Kansas, Missouri, and Texas after completing a sweep against UM-Duluth in the HHH Metrodome at the beginning of the month. The Oles found themselves playing outside for the first time, matched up against tough competition. The Oles went 3-5 on the trip and are 5-5 overall.

Men's Track Hopes to Finish Strong in 2001
MARCH 27, 2001 — Returning placers from the 2000 Championships include seniors Jonathon Pearce, who finished fourth in the 400 meter dash and Mark Bresnan, All-American and School Record Holder.

Women's Track Looking Forward to Challenge in 2001 Season
MARCH 27, 2001 — The 2001 St. Olaf women's track team will be young, but are looking forward to the challenge of a new season. It may be tough to repeat last year?s team success (3rd indoors and 4th in the outdoor MIAC championships), but the goal is always the same -- to finish among the top teams in the conference.

Baseball Will Attempt to Defend 2000 MIAC Title
MARCH 27, 2001 — The St. Olaf Baseball team has their sights set high for the 2001 season. The Oles finished the 2000 campaign with a school record 36 wins, a MIAC title, and an appearance in the Midwest Regional championship game. An experienced player returns at every position, and a group of five juniors will anchor the pitching staff.

Men's Tennis Looking Forward to Another Good Year
MARCH 27, 2001 — The men's team has a great core of returning players. Leading them is senior captain Pete Nau (Cedar Rapids, IA) comes off an excellent 2000 season where he finished second in the conference at number two singles and first at number one doubles.

Women's Tennis Returns Good Core of Players for 2001 Season
MARCH 27, 2001 — The women's team returns nine of twelve players from last year's squad. Seniors Alysaa Derksen and Rebekah VanWieren will lead their squad which looks to contend for a top three finish in the conference.

Fastpitch Will be Led by Strong Seniors
MARCH 27, 2001 — The Oles come into the 2001 season looking to improve on last year's disappointing record. Led by seniors Christina Moses (CF), Andrea Hatleli (2B), Sarah Cherry (LF), Christy Boraas (P, RF), and Amanda Ista (DP, 1B) they bring great leadership and big bats to the field.

Campus mourns death of three students
MARCH 19, 2001 — Three St. Olaf sophomores were killed early Saturday, when the car they were driving was struck by a wrong-way driver south of Springfield, Ill. Christopher A. Hoppe, 19, of Milford, Mass.; Sarah ?Sally? R. Heitman, 20, of O'Fallon, Ill., and Anna K. Bonde, 19, of Livonia, Mich., were traveling to New Orleans to volunteer at an elementary school over spring break.

St. Olaf Manitou Singers performing at national choral directors convention
MARCH 15, 2001 — St. Olaf College?s 100-voice Manitou Singers will perform for more than 6,500 choral directors during the annual American Choral Directors Association national convention Wednesday through Saturday, March 14-17, in San Antonio, Texas.

Alpine Ski Teams Return from Nationals
MARCH 15, 2001 — The alpine ski teams had mixed success at this year's National Championships. Several individuals had outstanding results and both teams did very well in one of the Championship's two events.

Business leaders to explore spiritual values in commerce during first-time conference at St. Olaf
MARCH 15, 2001 — Twin Cities and other area business leaders will explore the role of spiritual faith in the workplace during a first-ever conference at St. Olaf College Thursday, March 29. The conference is sponsored by St. Olaf College?s Finstad Center for Entrepreneurial Studies.

St. Olaf Nordic Skiers Compete at NCAA Championships
MARCH 13, 2001 — Jay Eidem (So., Bloomington, Minn.) and Sonja Bostrom (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.) returned this weekend from the NCAA Division I Cross-Country Skiing Championships in Middlebury, Vermont with the best results ever by a St. Olaf male or female skier.

Daymont Receives All-American Honors
MARCH 12, 2001 — The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field Team sent two individuals to the NCAA Championship meet held last weekend in Osh Kosh, Wisconsin.Competing in her second indoor National Meet sophomore Megan Daymont(Northfield, Minn.) came home with All-American Honors.

Bresnan Places Second at Nationals
MARCH 12, 2001 — St. Olaf senior Mark Bresnan (Indianola, Iowa) finished second in the 800 meter run at the Division III indoor championships in Oshkosh,Wisconsin last weekend, earning eight team points to cap an outstanding season for the men's track squad. Bresnan teamed with junior Corey Dingels to represent the Oles, who finished in a tie for thirteenth place; the top MIAC team in the field.

The Rev. Dr. Christopher Thomforde to be inaugurated as St. Olaf Colleges 10th president
MARCH 9, 2001 — The Rev. Dr. Christopher Meredith Thomforde will be inaugurated as St. Olaf College?s 10th president on Sunday, April 29, in a colorful academic ceremony that will highlight a gala three-day celebration.

Womens Tennis Suffers First Loss to Gustavus
MARCH 8, 2001 — The St. Olaf Women's team , after starting out 2-0, suffered their first loss on March 2nd, to the powerhouse of the MIAC conference Gustavus Adolphus.

Yale University professor to discuss Christianity in secular world at St. Olaf Monday
MARCH 8, 2001 — Gene Outka, Dwight Professor of Philosophy and Christian Ethics at Yale University Divinity School, will discuss religious responses to world politics in a lecture at St. Olaf College Monday, March 12.

Mens Indoor Track and Field takes Second at MIAC Championships
MARCH 8, 2001 — The St. Olaf men's track and field team capped off a season of promising performances with an explosion at the MIAC indoor championships. The Oles scored in seventeen of twenty events to place second, eighteen points behind St. Thomas. Coach Bill Thornton praised his team's effort, noting that the team was projected to finish fourth in the eleven-team field.

Mens Tennis Dominates Luther
MARCH 8, 2001 — The Oles men's tennis team took the court on Saturday, March 3rd to play Luther College at a neutral site in Rochester, MN. The Oles defeated Luther last year, playing in a virtual windstorm, but looked to defeat them indoors and out of the elements and continue their unbeaten streak.

MARCH 7, 2001 — The St. Olaf Band will feature a guest conductor and a St. Olaf College faculty soloist at its annual spring concert Sunday, March 11.

William Kent Krueger to read from latest book at St. Olaf College Wednesday, March 14
MARCH 7, 2001 — Acclaimed author William Kent Krueger will read from his new book Purgatory Ridge on Wednesday, March 14, at St. Olaf College.

Ole Baseball Opens Season with Sweep of UMD Bulldogs
MARCH 5, 2001 — On Sunday, March 4 the Oles opened their 2001 season with a doubleheader against the UMD Bulldogs in the HHH Metrodome. Behind strong pitching from juniors Scott Stadsklev (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Reid Rose (Long Lake, Minn.), the Oles pulled out a 5-4 victory.

Marie Malmin Meyer dies at 102; she taught English for 45 years at St. Olaf College
MARCH 5, 2001 — Marie Helene (Malmin) Meyer taught English for 45 years at St. Olaf College ? the longest term of service for any English faculty member in the college?s 126-year history. She died Saturday, March 3, in Northfield (Minn.) Care Center, at 102.

Oles Finish 5th in MIAC, Megan Daymont is a Double Winner
MARCH 5, 2001 — The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team placed fifth at last weekend?s MIAC Championship meet. The Oles scored 76.5 points in the meet, almost 20 points better than they were projected to score. St. Thomas won the meet, followed by Concordia, Gustavus, Carleton and the Oles.

Male vocal ensemble Cantus, David Hagedorn to premier Hamlin-Mbele collaboration at St. Olaf
MARCH 1, 2001 — The male vocal chamber ensemble Cantus will perform in concert Thursday, March 15, at St. Olaf College with percussionist David Hagedorn. The concert will include the premiere of a newly commissioned work with an African connection, "Songs From Matengo Folktales" ? a collaboration between St. Olaf music faculty member Peter Hamlin and English faculty member Joseph Mbele.

Valhalla Band to perform concert Monday, March 5, at St. Olaf College
MARCH 1, 2001 — The Valhalla Band, a St. Olaf College student wind ensemble, will play its final concert of the year on Monday, March 5.

Humorous Beauty/Beast exhibit featured at Steensland Art Museum
MARCH 1, 2001 — "Beauty/Beast," an exhibit by Vermont architect, sculptor and conceptual artist David Woolf, continues through Sunday, April 1, at Steensland Art Museum, St. Olaf College.
