Oles Swim by Tommies
JANUARY 31, 2001 — On Friday, January 26, the St. Olaf Swimming and Diving team hosted the men?s and women?s teams from the University of St. Thomas at Skoglund Pool. All of the swimmers and divers were happy to be back in their home pool- this was their second home meet of the season. The Ole teams? continued hard work and dedication gave its rewards once again in Friday night?s meet. Both the men and women?s teams proved to be tough competitors, and came away from the meet with another conference win. The final score for the men?s side was St. Olaf 129 points and St. Thomas 61 points. On the women?s side the final score was St. Olaf 131 points and St. Thomas 79 points.

German pastor who crusaded against Nazi persecutionwill be focus of chapel service
JANUARY 31, 2001 — The son of a German pastor will talk about his father?s public defiance to Nazi persecution of Jews during a talk at St. Olaf College on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Mens Hockey Swept by Bethel in Weekend Series
JANUARY 31, 2001 — The St. Olaf men?s hockey team returned to MIAC action this past weekend with hopes of making a late playoff run. However, those hopes were greatly diminished as the Oles were swept by Bethel College by scores of 6-2 on Friday night and 5-4 on Saturday night. After the weekend series, St. Olaf now moves to 7-11-1 (3-6-1 MIAC) on the season. Up next is a two game series with the University of St. Thomas on Friday and Saturday night. Friday night?s game is in Northfield and Saturday?s game is in St. Paul. Both games begin at 7 pm.

Ole Wrestlers Fourth at MIAC Duals
JANUARY 29, 2001 — The St. Olaf wrestlers finished fourth in the MIAC Team Dual Meet Tournament on January 26-27 at Augsburg College. The Oles posted strong wins against Carleton and St.Thomas, but lost to nationally ranked Augsburg , St. John's and dropped a tough match to Concordia. The Oles continue to miss two top wrestlers out of the lineup due to injury, and had to forfeit two weight classes in every match.

Basketball Games Rescheduled due to Threatening Weather
JANUARY 29, 2001 — The men's and women's basketball home doubleheader scheduled for Monday against Concordia-Moorhead has been postponed until Thursday, February 1. The games will be played in Skoglund Athletic Center with the women tipping off at 5:00 with the men following at 7:00 on Thursday night.

Shakespeares Twelfth Night to be presented Feb. 8-10, Feb. 15-17 at St. Olaf College
JANUARY 29, 2001 — Twelfth Night, a romantic Shakespeare comedy, opens Thursday, Feb 8, for a two-week run at St. Olaf College.

Ole Women Fall to Gustavus
JANUARY 25, 2001 — The Ole women?s basketball team fell to Gustavus Adolphus 56-42 at Skoglund Center. Elisa Hatlevig (Sr., Rushford, Minn.), leading scorer for the Oles, finished the night with 12 points, followed by Liz Mundahl (So., Eagan, Minn.) and Amanda Renneke (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) each with eight. Lisa Eidenschink (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) led the Oles on the glass with six rebounds.

Oles Battle to the Buzzer against Gusties
JANUARY 25, 2001 — In the Men's basketball game yesterday, Gustavus, perched on top in the MIAC and ranked 8th in the nation just edged by St. Olaf with a 78-75 win. This leaves St. Olaf at 3-8 in the MIAC and 5-10 overall. St. Olaf travels to Winona as they take on Saint Mary's on Saturday, January 27th, at 3 p.m.

Great Results for St. Olaf Racers at International Federation of Skiing Races.
JANUARY 25, 2001 — Members of the St. Olaf College Alpine Ski Team participated in a series of races sanctioned by the International Federation of Skiing last week. Coach Wojick was pleased with so many of the team doing well. This successful competition follows wins in races hosted by the Midwest Collegiate Ski Conference on the first two weekends of the month.

Spriegel and Ryan earn first team Lutheran All-American Football Team honors
JANUARY 24, 2001 — Manuel Spiegel (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) and Steve Ryan (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) were named to the Lutheran Brotherhood College All-American Football Team. Players from Lutheran schools from all divisions were eligible for consideration. Both Spriegel and Ryan were First Team selections.

Trnka and Mattson named to 2000 Lutheran College All-American Volleyball Team
JANUARY 24, 2001 — Lutheran Brotherhood announced its 2000 All-American Volleyball Team. Lutheran Colleges from the Division 1, II, III and NAIA levels nominated players for the team.

Nordic Ski Teams win at St. Mary's Invite
JANUARY 23, 2001 — The St. Olaf Nordic ski team competed at the St. Mary?s Invite in Winona, Minnesota. Last year, both the men?s and women?s teams dominated the MIAC ski conference by winning the conference titles at the MIAC championships last February.

St. Olaf Women's Track and Field turns in Impressive Performances
JANUARY 23, 2001 — The Ole Women's track and field team competed in the UW River Falls Early Bird Open meet last Friday night. No team scores were kept, but the Oles turned in a number of impressive performances.

Williams Leads Oles over the Knights
JANUARY 23, 2001 — Hallie Williams (Sr., Fort ,Worth, Texas) recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench to propel the Oles to an 80-72 decision over Carleton. Mike Ludwig (So., Blaine, Minn.) had 21 points and Ryan Olson (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) added 11 points and five assists in the victory.

Ole Swimmers Pursue Goals
JANUARY 23, 2001 — Coach Dave Hauck outlined the goals that he has for the St. Olaf swimming and diving team before they headed off to this past weekends meet in Wisconsin. Goal number one: we want everyone on our team to compete as much as possible. Goal number two: we don?t expect sensational times, but we want to compete in a preliminary-final meet format to prepare ourselves for the conference meet. Goal number three: we want to build team unity. Overall the Ole men?s and women?s teams placed 3rd. The women had a total of 575 points falling to University of Wisconsin Stevens Point finishing in 2nd with 700 points and Wheaton College finishing in 1st with 799 points. The Ole men finished the meet with a total of 733 points falling to Wheaton College who topped the men by just 1 point after winning the last relay. Wheaton had a total of 734 points. On the men?s side University of Wisconsin Stevens Point captured 1st place honors with a total of 788 points. Despite the long days, and developing sickness, the Ole swimmers and divers had a great weekend of competition at the annual Steven?s Point Invitational. This meet will be extremely beneficial to the team as the challenge of the conference meet approaches.

Mens Hockey Dominates MCHA Opponents in Weekend Sweep
JANUARY 23, 2001 — The St. Olaf Men?s Hockey team traveled to Wisconsin this past weekend for a 3 game non-conference series and came away with three very impressive wins by beating MSOE (Milwaukee School of Engineering) 13-2 on Friday night, 6-2 on Saturday night, and Lawrence University 9-2 on Sunday afternoon. St. Olaf now moves to 7-9-1 (3-4-1 MIAC) on the year. Up next for the Oles is a two game series with the Royals of Bethel College this upcoming weekend. Friday night?s game will be in St. Paul and Saturday night?s game will be in Northfield. Both games begin at 7 pm.

Ole Women Lose to Cross-town Rival Carleton
JANUARY 22, 2001 — In a game where both teams put school pride on the line and that has been called "a season onto itself," Carleton came out ahead of St. Olaf, 67-56. Winning the first of two matchups, the Carleton Knights moved their record to 10-3 overall (8-2 MIAC). The loss puts St. Olaf at 6-7 overall 4-6 (MIAC).

Ole Women Beat St. Kate's
JANUARY 18, 2001 — The Ole Women?s Basketball team defeated the St. Catherine Wildcats 75-62, putting the Ole?s MIAC standing at 4-5 and 6-6 overall. Liz Mundahl (So, Eagan, Minn.) scored a game high 14 points for the Oles.

Loring Knecht, long-time St. Olaf French professor,international studies pioneer, dies at 79
JANUARY 17, 2001 — Loring Dahl Knecht, long-time professor of French at St. Olaf College and a pioneer of college?s highly regarded international studies program, died on Tuesday, Jan. 16, in Three Links Care Center, Northfield, Minn., following a battle with liver cancer. He was 78.

Schlenker Leads Ole Hoopsters to Upset Victory
JANUARY 16, 2001 — The Oles played their hearts out yesterday, beating Augsburg 82-76, and moving up their record to 2-7 MIAC and 4-9 Overall. The Oles were lead by Matt Schlenker (first year Rochester, MN) who scored the game high of 18 points and had 9 rebounds, and Mike Ludwig (sophomore, Blaine, MN) who scored 15 points and racked up 7 rebounds. The Auggies were lead by Travis Hinze who scored 18 points.

Women's Hockey Drop Three
JANUARY 16, 2001 — The Oles fell twice to Augsburg and once to U. W. Steven's Point last week. They are looking forward to their upcoming MIAC series at Concordia.

Ole Swimmers Swamp Macalester
JANUARY 16, 2001 — On Friday, January 12, the St. Olaf men?s and women?s swimming and diving traveled to St. Paul for a dual meet verses Macalester College. Coach Bob Hauck said, "Both the men and women had great races. Going into the meet we knew that the number of men participating on the Macalester team were few. That left the St. Olaf men with the challenge of racing against each other in some cases. Even with fewer opponents, the men?s team was able to do a wonderful job of creating a competitive atmosphere amongst themselves." The final score of the men?s meet was St. Olaf 150 and Macalester 34. On the women?s side, the final score was St. Olaf 172 and Macalester 69.

Mens Hockey Earns 3 of 4 Points in Weekend Series
JANUARY 16, 2001 — The St. Olaf Men?s Hockey team returned to MIAC action in full force this past weekend by beating the Cardinals of St. Mary?s University 7-5 on Friday night in Winona and tying 4-4 Saturday night in Northfield. St. Olaf now moves to 4-9-1 (3-4-1 MIAC) on the season. Up next for the Oles is the final non-conference series for the season with games at Milwaukee School of Engineering on Friday and Saturday nights at 7 pm and Lawrence University at 2 pm on Sunday afternoon. The Oles return to MIAC action with a home and home series the following weekend against Bethel College. Friday night?s game will be in Minneapolis and Saturday night?s game will be in Northfield. Both games begin at 7 pm.

Ole Women Lose Heartbreaker in Triple Overtime
JANUARY 15, 2001 — In their second consecutive overtime in a week, the St. Olaf women fell to Augsburg College 90-89. The Oles fought back again and again, but could not capitalize. At the end of regulation, the Oles missed two free throws to send the game into the first OT.

Ole Nordic Ski Teams Open Season at Michigan Tech
JANUARY 15, 2001 — This past weekend the St. Olaf Nordic Ski team competed in the Michigan Tech University Invitational in Ishpeming, Michigan. These races were the first events of the Central Collegiate Ski Association.

Free Throws Carry Tommies over Oles
JANUARY 15, 2001 — St. Thomas had five players in double figures as they defeated St. Olaf 89-78. The 23rd ranked Tommies shot 53% from the field and 88% from the line in the victory. Mike Ludwig (So., Blaine, Minn.) and Tim Nelson (So., Braham, Minn.) led the Oles with 22 and 19 points respectively.

St. Olaf Orchestra, St. Olaf Choir to appear in rare joint performance during Orchestra winter tour
JANUARY 11, 2001 — The internationally renowned St. Olaf Orchestra will join the world-famous St. Olaf Choir for an historic joint performance in San Antonio, Texas, during the Orchestra?s nine-state tour in late January and early February.

Ole Wrestlers Compete at North Country Invite
JANUARY 11, 2001 — The Ole wrestlers had a successful day at the North Country Invitational Tournament, held at St. John's University in Collegeville. The injury-depleted Oles had only seven wrestlers competing, but still finished 8th out of fifteen teams, including nationally ranked teams from Division III and the NAIA.

St. Olaf Falls on the Road to St. John's
JANUARY 11, 2001 — St. John's University defeated St. Olaf in convincing fashion 90-60 behind 27 points from Troy Bigalke (Sr., Monticello) and seven assists from Ryan Keating (Jr., Minnetonka). Mike Ludwig (So., Blaine) had 23 points, while Matt Schlenker (FY., Rochester) added ten points and seven rebounds for the Oles in a losing effort.

Ole Hoopsters Take Number One St. Ben's to OT
JANUARY 11, 2001 — The St. Olaf Women?s Basketball team put up a valiant effort, but succumbed to the number one Blazers in overtime 72-63. The loss puts the Oles? season record at 5-5 overall, 3-4 in the MIAC.

Oles Nip Hamline
JANUARY 9, 2001 — The St. Olaf men earned their first MIAC victory Monday night at home beating Hamline 71-65 in overtime. The win leaves the Oles with a 3-7 mark, 1-5 in MIAC action while Hamline drops to 0-9 and 0-5. The Oles do not get any rest and will travel to meet St. John?s in MIAC action at Collegeville on Wednesday. A 7:30 tip off is scheduled.

Services scheduled Jan. 13 for Gerry Thorson, professor emeritus of English, prolific scholar
JANUARY 9, 2001 — Gerald Thorson, professor emeritus of English at St. Olaf College, died Sunday, Jan. 7, of congestive heart failure at his daughter?s home in Knoxville, Tenn. He was 79. Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, in St. John?s Lutheran Church in Northfield.

Ole Swimmers Travel to Florida
JANUARY 9, 2001 — On the morning of December 26, thirty swimmers, six divers, two coaches and their wives, along with the newest member of the family, baby Cully arrived at the airport to catch their flight to Fort Lauderdale in order to make St. Olaf?s 16th annual training trip to Florida. Every year this trip gives the team an opportunity to have a great bonding experience whether it is making it through the tough two a day practices, or relaxing on the beach and playing cards in between practices. According to coach Bob Hauck, "the bond that is created on this trip is very special and helps to make a unique team atmosphere that is much needed going into the championship meet."

JANUARY 9, 2001 — Internationally renowned virtuoso pianist Piotr Folkert will present a masterclass at St. Olaf College on Friday, Jan. 12.

Mens Hockey Swept in NCHA series finale
JANUARY 9, 2001 — The St. Olaf men?s hockey team ended a tough six game non-conference series with the NCHA by losing a close game to the University of Wisconsin-Stout Blue Devils 3-2 on Friday night in Northfield and 6-2 to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in River Falls on Saturday. St. Olaf concludes their series against the NCHA with a 1-5 record. St. Olaf now moves to 3-9 overall (2-4 MIAC). The Oles return to conference play next weekend against the Cardinals of St. Mary?s University with a Friday night game in Winona and a Saturday night game in Northfield. Both games begin at 7 pm.

All-Norwegian music to be featured in cello-piano recital Jan. 11 at St. Olaf
JANUARY 8, 2001 — All-Norwegian music will be featured in a recital by cellists Mira Frisch and Melita Glass and St. Olaf College music faculty member and pianist Kathryn Ananda-Owens on Thursday, Jan. 11, at the college.

New works by Wendell Arneson to be featured in exhibit at Steensland
JANUARY 8, 2001 — New works by St. Olaf College art faculty member Wendell Arneson will be featured in "Reflections" showing at Steensland Art Museum starting Friday, Jan. 12, and continuing until Sunday, Feb. 18.

A Festival of Trombones concerts scheduled in Northfield Jan. 14, Rochester Jan. 21
JANUARY 4, 2001 — St. Olaf College?s Trombone Choir, directed by Paul Niemisto, will perform in "A Festival of Trombones" concerts in Northfield and Rochester on Sunday, Jan. 14, and Sunday, Jan. 21.

Ole Women's Basketball Opens New Year with Win
JANUARY 4, 2001 — The Ole women's basketball team opened the New Year with a 63-49 win at Bethel College. On the heels of a three-game losing streak at the holiday break, the Oles controlled the tempo of the game from the outset, with a swarming defense, causing 31 Royal turnovers.

Oles Fall to Bethel
JANUARY 4, 2001 — Despite the heroic efforts and point production from Mike Ludwig, the Oles dropped their fifth straight at Skoglund Center, Wednesday night. Bethel defeated St. Olaf 72 ? 68. The Oles are now 2-6, 0-4 in MIAC action. The Oles travel to St. Paul to face Macalester in their next contest. Tip off time is 3 o?clock on Saturday, January 6.

Norwegian music, dance program Jan. 5 features Hardanger fiddlers, dancers
JANUARY 3, 2001 — A Norwegian music and dance program featuring Hardanger fiddlers and Norwegian dancers will be performed at St. Olaf College on Friday, Jan. 5.
