MARCH 18, 2007 — English professor Diana Postlethwaite, who holds the Boldt Distinguished Chair in the Humanities, has followed novelist Jane Smiley's characters to the rich farmlands of Iowa, the inner workings of a Midwestern university, the particulars of "horse-breeding subcultures" and more. Now Postlethwaite journeys with Smiley to the sex-soaked bedrooms of the Hollywood hills, and she isn't sure the ride is worth it. Our professor's review of Ten Days in the Hills appeared in the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune.

MARCH 14, 2007 — "You've got to teach me that, dog!" yelled a sixth-grader to Luke Anderson '02 as the St. Olaf Admissions staffer recited the first 250 digits of pi and performed an Eminem-style rap about the special number for a Minneapolis classroom. The St. Olaf community can experience Anderson's act on campus March 15 (his eighth in as many years), but anyone unable to catch that gig can read all about Anderson's devotion to pi in the Star Tribune.

MARCH 13, 2007 — "In order for students to expand their understanding of vocation it is critical that they have first-hand contact with people whose lives mirror a sense of vocation," says Merrie Benasutti of the Center for Experiential Learning. Benasutti recently took a number of St. Olaf students to Washington, D.C., to get a first-hand taste of many types of service vocations.

He notes that St. Olaf consumes a great quantity of these commodities every day, and he hopes his lecture will provide new insights into the consumption of these goods.

Prof. James Hanson examines Jesus' 'lost tomb'

MARCH 4, 2007 — When a big-name Hollywood director produces a Discovery Channel documentary called The Lost Tomb of Jesus (which premiered March 4), both secular society and scholars of religious thought are going to take notice. Associate Professor of Religion James Hanson is among those paying close attention to Titanic director James Cameron's story of the discovery in 1980 of a tomb believed by many to be that of Jesus. "I don't think it's a complete publicity stunt," he recently told the "Faith and Values" section of the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune.

St. Olaf Provost and Professor of Classics James May says the lyrics of the piece, dealing with the Day of Judgment and eternal salvation, interestingly complement the commercial's theme.
