Early musicians to play for the public on Thursday
JULY 27, 2006 — The Viola da Gamba Society of America will host its annual weeklong conference and celebration of music-making at St. Olaf College the week of July 23.

St. Olaf to feature second annual chess camp in July
JULY 27, 2006 — St. Olaf College will host its second annual chess camp this weekend. The camp, which used to be housed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is designed to provide participants with professional instruction in a social environment.

Vintage Band Music Fesitival
JULY 27, 2006 — More than 15 bands will present 40 outdoor concerts from the 27th through the 31st of July during this unique International Wind Music History Symposium and Vintage Band Music Festival. The event is hosted by St. Olaf College and the City of Northfield, and sponsored by The Historic Brass Society (HBS) USA and Internationale Gesellschaft zur Erforschung und Forderung der Blasmusic, (IGEB) Austria. Arctic explorer Eric Larsen '93 chats with Leno

JULY 26, 2006 — Last year Eric Larsen '93, along with Lonnie Dupre, attempted the first summer crossing of the Arctic Ocean. Unfortunately, the duo was unable to complete their journey due to unexpectedly premature ice melt. On Monday Jay Leno hosted the two on The Tonight Show, where they talked about global warming. Leno's site currently includes a link (featuring a photo of Larsen and Dupre) to a site that encourages taking action to "stop global warming."

Professor comments on Hatch complaint in Star Tribune

JULY 26, 2006 — Minnesota Attorney General Mike Hatch has accused the Star Tribune of asking "sleazy" questions after it was revealed that a political rival had hired an investigator to conduct research on Hatch. St. Olaf Professor of Political Science Dan Hofrenning doesn't think voters will remember much about the issue come November, but "I think it does reveal Mike Hatch to be a hard-charging, aggressive politician," he says.

JULY 25, 2006 — "There's a certain ethnocentricity that you don't find in the Swedes and Germans and others," says Odd Lovoll, professor emeritus of Scandinavian Studies at St. Olaf, about the Norwegian-Americans of Benson, Minn. -- one of the subjects of his latest book: Norwegians on the Prairie: Ethnicity and the Development of the Country Town (available in August from the Minnesota Historical Society Press). Star Tribune reporter Chuck Haga recently visited Benson and surrounding communities to see how Norwegian locals keep their heritage alive... sometimes to the annoyance of non-Norwegians.

Women's golf team ranked nationally as all-scholar team
JULY 21, 2006 — The St. Olaf women's golf team has been noted in a national ranking for the academic achievements of its student-athletes. St. Olaf came in third, with a collective average team GPA 3.65, ahead of Wartburg and Carleton colleges.

St. Olaf hosts conference on Worship and the Arts

JULY 20, 2006 — Several Oles are on campus this week to lead the St. Olaf Conference on Worship, Theology and the Arts. Seminars, workshops and daily worship services will be lead by St. Olaf alumni, such as Larry Rasmussen '61, former Reinhold Niebuhr Professor of Social Ethics at New York's Union Theological Seminary.

Fourth marks 100th anniversary of band, baseball in Norway
JULY 4, 2006 — During its historic 1906 tour to Norway, the St. Olaf Band took a break from performing, broke out the bat and ball, and introduced baseball to Norwegian soil. This Fourth of July denotes the centennial of a little-known event in the century-long relationship between Norway and St. Olaf College.

St. Olaf begins new ring road construction
JULY 3, 2006 — Rerouting the campus ring road is an integral element of St. Olaf's plan for a new Science Complex. "The college is taking measures to minimize the impact of this construction," says Assistant Vice President for Facilities Pete Sandberg.
