This course is offered each fall semester and is a great general course for students interested in all kinds of performance (Theatre, Dance, Music & Visual Art) and the visual and aural elements of the performance environment. It is also a great "gateway" course to the Theatre major for students with an interest in design and production.

252 Drawing and Painting for Theatre
As the catalog says, this course is offered "periodically". Check with me. The goal is that it will be offered at least once during a students four years, perhaps more frequently. Painting in Theatre includes all kinds of surface work on scenery and props. The position in the professional performing Arts world is usually referred to as a Scenic Artist or "Scenic". Good drawing, color, texture, and painting skills are important and this class covers these with perceptual drawing exercises, color and painting projects.

253b Theatre Practicum: CADD
Being able to read and create technical drawings for performance design work is an important part of communicating your vision to the others in the performance project. This class introduces VectorWorks CAD software and is devoted to helping you learn the application, learn about technical drawings and learn how to create each of the common drawings used in performance design work. Fall Semester.

This course covers the design areas of scenery and costuming and we go through the entire process that designers follow to do their design work. Reading and analyzing the script; researching the production; collaborating with others on the project; creating preliminary designs, models, sketches, renderings; showing how the elements are constructed with drawings and making final presentations; these are all part of the course as we make our way through the semester. The buildings or environments that we go to when we see a performance or create that performance are silent partners in the experience. What makes a good performance space- good for experiencing performance and good for creating that performance? Picking up where the 250 class leaves off in lighting, this course reviews lighting production information, focuses on the specific details of the lighting design work that is followed by seasoned designers and applies this to practical projects in lighting a performance.
