Women's basketball six points shy of victory
January 6, 2004
The St. Olaf women's basketball team hosted the Saint Benedict Blazers on Monday, January 5. The Oles played hard as both teams exchanged baskets to each hold the lead at various points in the game. Free-throw shooting late in the game enabled the Blazers to come away with the win, 67-62.
St. Benedict came out strong and led by as much as eight points, but a jumper by Jill Johnson (Sr., Butterfield, Minn.) with 12:47 left in the first half, began a run by the Oles to even up the contest. The Oles went into the locker room with a 29-28 lead.
In the second half, the Oles led by as much as six points, but the Blazers tough defense and strong rebounding brought them back to take the lead with 3:32 to go. The Oles never gave up, and Holly Grimsrud (FY, Zumbrota, Minn.) made a clutch three-pointer with ten seconds to go to put the Oles back within four points. Grimsrud was fouled on another three-point shot with three seconds to go, but there was not enough time for the Oles to make their comeback.
Grimsrud led the Oles with 15 points, six assists, and no turnovers. Johnson also had ten points, and Christina Sampson (FY, North Branch, Minn.) had ten points, shooting 100 percent from the field, and nine rebounds. The Oles had a solid all around game, shooting 42 percent from both behind the arc and overall.
The team returns to action on Wednesday, January 7, at Bethel College at 7:30 p.m.
