Bethel edges Ole women's basketball by four points
January 8, 2004
The St. Olaf women's basketball team traveled to St. Paul, Minn. on Wednesday evening for a game against the Bethel Royals. The Oles had a second half lead, but could not maintain the lead as the Royals slipped by them 67-71.
St. Olaf came out and took the early lead, but the Royals took advantage of three Ole turnovers within one minute, shortly into the game. Bethel controlled the remainder of the first half until Jill Johnson (Sr., Butterfield, Minn.), assisted by Sarah McBroom (Sr., Mora, Minn.), hit an inside jumper with 0:18 seconds left to tie the game 27-27 at the break.
In the second half, the game remained close, but with seven minutes to play, the Oles captured the lead by ten points. Rushing their offense in the last few minutes, as well as Royal Jen Ahlbergs 13 points in the final six minutes, the Oles lead diminished. Although the game was tied with less than 30 seconds remaining, the Royals scored the last four points to edge the Oles, 71-67.
St. Olaf had three players score in double figures -- Johnson with 15, Holly Grimsrud (FY, Zumbrota, Minn.) with 14, and Molly Simon (Jr., Hudson, Wisc.) with 13. Natalie Rigelman (So., Lake City, Minn.) and Christine Schwictenberg (So., Hopkins, Minn.) each grabbed eight boards, while Kelly Sweeney (Sr., Oakdale, Minn.) had five assists.
The Oles travel to Augsburg on Saturday, January 10, with a 1:00 p.m. tip off.
