Asian tour included in Freeman Foundation support for eight faculty/staff projects at St. Olaf

The Freeman Foundation Faculty/Staff Development Program in Asian Studies has announced that five faculty and three staff from St. Olaf will participate in a three-week on-campus seminar in June 2004 and in a three-week tour of China and Japan in June 2005.

The selected individuals will work on a project with a mentor from the Asian Studies faculty, attend the Asian Studies faculty seminar and take survival language training in either Chinese or Japanese in academic year 2004-05. Projects will be implemented in academic year 2005-06.

The faculty and staff and their projects are:

  • Associate Professor of History Laurel Carrington will work with mentor Robert Entenmann on "Vietnam under French Colonialism."
  • Director of Government and Foundation Relations Patrick Dale will work with mentor Bruce Dalgaard on "Supporting Asian Studies After Freeman."
  • Associate Professor of Psychology Dana Gross will work with mentor Rika Ito on "Child Development and Family Life in Japan."
  • Assistant Professor of Music David Hagedorn will work with mentor Phyllis Larson on "The Japanese Theater Music Tradition."
  • Assistant Professor of Biology Kim Kandl will work with mentor Richard Bodman on "East Asian Medicine."
  • Library Catalog Associate Jeanie Owens will work with mentor Kris MacPherson on "The Chinese-Japanese-Korean Cataloguing Project."
  • Associate Director of Admissions Luyen Phan will work with mentor Karil Kucera on "Successful Recruitment for an International Campus."
  • Associate Professor of Dance Anne Von Bibra Wharton will work with mentor Katherine Tegtmeyer-Pak on "Asian Dance Technique."
