Men's hockey shuts out Lawrence, 6-0

The St. Olaf Men's hockey team posted a convincing win this past weekend, defeating the Lawrence Vikings 6-0 in non-conference play. The Oles got off to a fast start, scoring in the first two minutes of the game.

In front of a packed house on Friday evening the Oles came out flying, scoring just one minute into the game. Joel Ihrie (So., Woodinville, WA) cashed in on a rebound in the crease and the Oles never looked back. The score remained 1-0 until the second period where the Oles exploded for five unanswered goals.

Ted Bickel (So., Chanhassen, Minn.), drove hard out of the corner to the net and slipped the puck past the goaltender. Seven minutes later forward Kyle Hilmershausen (FY, Wausau,Wis.) had a fantastic backhand shot that went in over the goalies glove hand. Hilmershausen received a break away pass from Mitch Mudra (FY, Edina, Minn.) and broke in down the left side of the rink. Using his speed he drove in front of the net and buried a shot.

Continuing the momentum, Josh Biser (So, Waunakee, Wis.) scored next for the Oles, only 16 seconds after Hilmershausen's goal. Biser received a pass from behind the net and one-timed it in the back of the net. Biser scored minutes later, notching his second of the night. Kyle McDermott (Kasson, Minn.) slipped the puck ahead to Ron Guild (Kent, Wish.) who drove wide in the Viking's zone. Biser remained high in the slot waiting for the pass and fired a shot past the goalies glove. The assist was Guild's third of the evening.

The final goal of the second period came off of McDermott's stick with only four seconds remaining. He broke toward the net from his defensive position on the blue line and received a pass from behind the net tapping it home.

Garret Hasti (Sr., St. Louis Park, MN) stopped 15 shots for the Oles notching his first shutout in his four-year career. The Oles pounded the Viking goalie with 56 shots.

Both teams return to action on Saturday for game two of the weekend series at the Northfield Ice Arena at 2:00 p.m.
