Women's hockey continues winning ways with 5-1 victory over Augsburg

The St. Olaf womens hockey team continued their conference action with a two game series against Augsburg. The Oles hosted Augsburg at the Northfield Ice Arena on the Friday, January 16. The Oles played a solid game all around with great defense, tricky offense and great intensity and came away with the 5-1 win.
The Oles got on the scoreboard right away when Lindsay Weier(So., Menomonie, Wis.)scored on her second shift of the game, with an assist from Brit Schultheis (Jr., Shoreview, Minn.). The teams next goal came with about two minutes remaning in the first period, as Kate Barnett (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) snipped a shot from the slot. The Oles took a 2-0 lead into the first break.
Protecting a two goal lead, the Oles began the second period with another score. Maria Richardson (Fr., New Brighton, Minn.) slipped the puck into the net for a 3-0 lead. Goaltender, Andrea Smith (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.), was a crucial aspect of the Oles defense as Augsburg continued to outshoot the Ole women.
As St. Olaf skated into the third period, they had a chance to execute their power play. The fourth goal came off the stick of Erin Baxter (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) as she one timed it off a pass from Weier. With the Oles ahead, 4-0, Augsburg snuck behind the play and caught the loose puck to score a break away goal marking their first of the game. St. Olaf answered with one more goal as Weier scored her second goal of the game, off a pass from Barnett, to finalize the Oles 5-1 victory over Augsburg.
The Oles are now 5-2 in the MIAC and 7-2-4 over all. St. Olaf travels to Augsburg College on Saturday, January 17th to play their second game of their two games series. The action starts at 2:00 p.m.
