Men's hockey sweeps Bethel for fourth consecutive win
January 19, 2004
The St. Olaf men's hockey team hosted the Bethel Royals for the second game of their weekend series on Saturday, January 17. Coming off a road win at Bethel on Friday night, the Oles came out looking for the sweep. Although they fell behind early, they used their great powerplay to seal a 4-2 win for the second consecutive night.
Mitch Mudra (FY, Edina, Minn.) ripped a slap shot from the top of the circle to tie the game at one. Dan Norsten (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) added his name on the score sheet with the assist along with Pat Gilles (Jr., Waunakee, Wis.).
The Oles began the second period with a go-ahead goal from Josh Biser (So., Waunakee, Wis.) who scored with a slap shot past the goalie on a one on one. Norsten would light the lamp on a powerplay firing a shot from the slot off the far post and in. Bethel answered with another goal, but the Oles held on to a 3-2 lead going into the final break. St. Olaf then took a 4-2 lead when Norsten came in on a one-on-one and exploded another slap shot past the goalie. Teammated Gilles and Mutra were credited with the assists. Goalie Garret Hasti (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) played excellent in goal for the second straight night, stopping 31 of 33 shots.
The victory is the Oles fourth consecutive win and they have won five of their last six games. The men's hockey team is now 3-2 in the MIAC and 6-6-1 overall. They return to action this weekend when they host the University of St. Thomas on Friday night January 23, at the Northfield Ice Arena at 8:00 p.m.
