Women's hockey sweeps Augsburg for third sweep of the season
January 19, 2004
The St. Olaf women's hockey team traveled to Augsburg on Saturday, January 17th for their second game against the Auggies. Coming off a Friday night 5-1 win, the Oles went into the game looking for their third conference sweep of the year. With less than 24 hours to recover from previous game, St. Olaf played hard for sixty minutes and game away with the 2-1 win.
The St. Olaf came out flying in the first. They produced some really good scoring opportunities but were not able to get the puck past Augsburgs goaltender. Both teams went into the first break scoreless.
In the second period, the Oles and the Auggies continued to battle it out. With two minutes left in the second period, Kendra Ruff (So., Willmar, Minn.) received a tripping penalty as she stopped Augsburg from getting to the Oles net. There was still no scoring after two periods.
Twenty two seconds in to the third period the Maria Richardson (Fr., New Brighton, Minn.) scored the first goal of the game off a pass from Kate Barnett (Jr.-C, Burnsville, Minn.). Augsburg soon answered St. Olafs goal to tie it up again, 1-1. St. Olaf found themselves on a power play for the first time of the game. They took full advantage of this opportunity. Barnett pulled the puck back to Sarah Ray (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) who scored on the first shot of the power play to give the Oles a 2-1 lead and win the game.
Kerry Rollwagen (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn.) had 30 saves. The Oles penalty kill played tough as they found themselves killing four penalties throughout the game.
The Oles are now 6-2-0 in the MIAC and 8-4-2 overall. They play their next game on Friday, January 23rd when they host Gustavus at the Northfield Ice Arena at 5:00 p.m.
