St. Olaf College faced the Hamline University Pipers on Monday, January 19 at Skoglund Arena. The Oles and Pipers traded the lead back and forth, but the Pipers pulled out a last minute victory, passing the Oles 71-69.

Hamline started out strong and took a seven point lead at the beginning of the game, but Molly Simon (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) was fouled on a three point shot, 12 minutes into the half, and put the Oles up with her three free throws. The Oles would maintain the lead for most of the first half, as they shot 48 percent from the field and outrebounding the Pipers 19-17 at the break.

In the second half the Oles were up by as much as 11 points with just eight minutes to play, but the Pipers stepped their play up and took the lead, just four minutes later. Jill Johnson (Sr., Butterfield, Minn.) hit a jumper to put the Oles back up, but Jess Barrett of Hamline hit two key shots in the last minutes to allow Hamline to regain the lead. Holly Grimsruds (FY, Zumbrota, Minn.) last second three-pointer just missed the basket. Hamline shot 58 percent to the Oles 37 percent and outrebounded the Oles 23-15 in the second half.

Grimsrud played outstanding for the Oles and led all scorers with 24 points, going 4-7 behind the arc. Simon also scored in double figures with 15. Johnson had eight boards and four assists.

The Oles return to action in just two days when they host the Concordia Cobbers in a 5:30 p.m. game at Skoglund Arena.
