Calling it "a tricky show on all levels," the St. Paul Pioneer Press described director Gary Gisselman's staging of Pacific Overtures at Park Square Theatre in St. Paul as "graceful" and "impressively solid throughout." The Minneapolis-based Star Tribune praised the production's "amazing pageantry and lively pacing." An artist in residence in the theater department at St. Olaf College, Gisselman is a highly regarded director in the Twin Cities, having staged productions at Chanhassen Dinner Theatre and the Guthrie Theater, where he is best known for his annual direction of A Christmas Carol.

As for Gisselman's latest work at Park Square Theatre, "he and his collaborators have created a visual and aural masterpiece," wrote Star Tribune critic Graydon Royce. "But amid all the display, the director makes the story accessible and vivid. Excellent work.
