Last minute surge sparks Cardinals past Ole women
January 26, 2004
The Oles dropped a close one to the Saint Marys Cardinals on Saturday, January 24. Despite leading much of the game, a run by the Cardinals near the final minutes of play put Saint Marys in a position to fight for the lead. Down by one point, with one minute left, the Oles could not get the shots they needed to win the game and fell 60-54.
The Oles started slow, but halfway through the first period Jill Johnson (Sr., Butterfield, Minn.) hit a jumper to put the Oles on top, 16-14, and spark a 12-4 run until Cardinal Ashley Leuhmann hit a last second jumper, leaving the Oles on top 28-20 at the half.
St. Olaf maintained their eight point lead for the first minutes of second half play, but the Cardinals went on a 14-4 run to put them up by one point with nine minutes left of play. The Oles and the Cardinals both led in the last minutes of play, but Cardinal Beth Walch hit a three-pointer with 0:41 on the clock to increase their lead to four points. The Oles could not get a shot off until the final seconds of the game.
Johnson led the Oles with 23 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Holly Grimsrud (FY, Zumbrota, Minn.) had nine points, while Christine Schwictenberg (So., Hopkins, Minn.) and Sarah McBroom (Sr., Mora, Minn.) both chipped in seven. The Oles and Cardinals both shot 43 percent for the game and St. Olaf outrebounded Saint Marys 34-32.
St. Olaf hosts Gustavus on Wednesday, January 28 at 7:30 pm.
