Men's hockey gains one point in MIAC standings
January 28, 2004
The mens hockey team gained one point from last weekends series with the first place Tommies. The Oles and Tommies faced off for a two game series that included 21 goals. The Oles skated to a 5-5 draw on Friday night at home, and lost a heartbreaker 6-5 on Saturday at St. Thomas. St. Olaf forward Kyle Hilmershausen (FY, Wausau, Wis.) got the scoring started for the Oles early in the first period Friday night. He skated down the right side of the ice and ripped a shot high over the goalies glove. The Oles struck again in the second trailing 3-2. Ron Guild (So., Woodenville, Wis.) notched his third goal of the year when he put in a rebound to the side of the net.
The Tommies would make the game 4-2 later in the second, but the Oles responded with two goals in 40 seconds. Defenseman Mitch Mudra (FY, Edina, Minn.) flipped the puck from the point over everyones head and somehow it found the back of the net. Seconds, later Josh Biser (So., Waunakee, Wis.) drove hard to the net on a rush and put in a rebound kicked out to him in the slot. The Oles went into the third knotted at four. The Oles took the lead early in the third period when Wally Cisewski (Sr., Minnatonka, Minn.) scored his first of the year. Goalie Garret Hasti (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) played great through the third, helping kill off several Thomas power plays. St. Thomas scored with seven minutes remaining in the game, to send it into overtime. The score remained 5-5 despite five minutes of overtime play.
The second game of the series was similar to the first, except the Tommies finished the game with a 6-5 score. The scoring for the Oles came from Ron Guild, who scored two on the evening while leading goal scorer Dan Norsten tallied his eighth of the year. Sophomore Ted Bickel (Chanhassen, Minn.) scored once and Senior captain Mike Jewison (St. Paul, Minn.) had a nice back door goal.
The men's team returns to the ice this weekend for a two game series against Augsburg. The Oles host the Auggies on Friday, January 30 at 7:00 p.m.
