The St. Olaf womens hockey team and Gustavus Adolphus College battled it out, on Friday, January 23, for the second place position in MIAC standings. The Oles hosted Gustavus in the first game of a two game series on Friday night at the Northfield Ice Arena. Although it was a fast and physical game, the Oles fell 3-0.

The first period was a combination of offensive and defensive play. The Oles controlled the puck in the Gusties zone, but also played smart. Both teams were not able to put any points on the board and went into the first break tied at zero.

Early in the second period, Gustavus took the lead with a quick goal. They kept the momentum of the game and scored a second goal about half way through the period.

In the third period, St. Olaf came out aggressive and worked hard. However, Gustavus scored after about eleven minutes, notching the score to 3-0. Throughout the whole game the Oles played tough but were not able to put the puck in net. The Gusties held St. Olaf to a game total of 12 shots on goal. Andrea Smith (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) played great in the net, recording 39 saves.

The Oles are now 6-3-0 in the MIAC and 8-5-2 over all. St. Olaf will face off against Gustavus Adolphus College again on Saturday, January 24 in the second game of their two game series at 5:00 p.m.
