Swimmers and divers have success at Stevens Point

The St. Olaf Men's and Women's swimming and diving teams competed in their final invitational before the MIAC championships when they traveled to Stevens Point, Wisconsin on January 23rd and 24th. It was the last chance for the Oles to compete in some of the events that aren't offered in a dual meet format. The Ole Men finished with 708 points which put them third out of seven teams, and ahead of conference rivals Gustavus and Carleton. The women finished fifth out of nine teams with a total of 453 points ahead of Gustavus and right behind Carleton.

The Friday night finals session proved exciting as the men and women won five of the first six individual events. Katie Detwiler (Jr., Fort Atkinson, Wis.) started things off with a win in the 200 IM in a time of 2:14.91. Mark Glineburg (So., St. Paul, Minn.) kept things going with a win in the men's 200 IM in a time of 1:59.52. Kelly Dolan (FY, Lincon, Neb.) and Anne Lindberg (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) turned in season best times in the 500 Free earning them 3rd and 4th respectively in that event. Kelly finished in a 5:16.50 and Anne went a 5:18.54.

Joe Anderson (FY, Madison, Wis.) and Adam Thomas (FY, Eglin, Ill.) got the Oles back on the winning track by getting 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the men's 500 free. Both Anderson and Thomas finished under the 4:50 mark turning in times of 4:49.27 for Anderson and 4:49.34 for Thomas.

Carly Knoell (So., Lincoln, Neb.) and Tom Kukla (FY, Dubuque, Iowa) turned in a pair of 100 Backstroke wins. Knoell finished in a time of 1:01.02 and Kukla finished in a season best 53.83. Eric Palmer (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) had the top finish for the men in the 200 breast, finishing seventh with a 2:20.68.

Drew Vanderwert (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.) turned in an impressive season best in the 100 freestyle with a 48.17, finishing fourth in the event. Katie Detwiler and Hannah Berg (So., Edina, Minn.) performed well, finishing third and fourth in the 200 Butterfly. Detwiler swam it in 2:17.98 and Berg in 2:18.35.

Andy Tompsett (FY, Nashotah, Wis.) and Patrick Marzolf (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) turned in top eight finishes in the 200 Butterfly. Tompsett went 2:05.12 to take fifth while Marzolf went 2:09.72 to take seventh. The 800 Free Relay team of Anderson, Thomas, Glineburg and Lee Thomsen (Sr., El Cajon, Calif.) took second with a time of 7:11.43.

The Divers also performed well on the first day. Emily Koeck (Jr., Fargo, ND) had the top finish for the Ole women on the three meter board with a score of 314.00 to take tenth. On the one meter for the men, Brad Wourms (Jr., Cohasset, Minn.) scored a 419.15 to take second. The second day of finals began with great finishes in the mile for both the men and women's teams. Carly Knoell, Anne Lindberg and Kelly Dolan all finished in the top eight and Joe Anderson, Adam Thomas and Mark Glineburg took first, second and third in the mile.

Detwiler finished third in the 400 IM with a national 'B' qualifying time of 4:43.87. Glineburg proved his dominance in the Individual Medley by winning the 400 IM by over ten seconds with a time of 4:13.73. Dolan took third in the women's 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:59.92.

The Men's 200 freestyle final heat was filled with Oles. Thomas, Vanderwert, Anderson and Thomsen all placed in the top eight. They took 2nd, 5th, 6th and 8th in the event, respectively. Palmer had another top eight finish in the 100 Breaststroke in 1:03.79 to place eighth.

Knoell and Kukla showed their backstroke prowess again by winning the 200 backstroke. Emily Love (So., Kansas City, Mo) had a great finish in the 50 Freestyole, taking seventh with a 25.67. Drew Vanderwert took fifth in the men's 50 Freestyle with a 22.29.

The Divers added some valuable points on their second day of competition. Koeck took seventh on the one meter and Christian Lorentzen (FY, Phoenix, Ariz.) won the three meter competition for the men and Wourms finished third in the three meter.

The Oles will return to competition with two dual meets this week. They will travel to St. Paul to take on St. Thomas on the 27th and then host Carleton on the 31st. The Ole women have a dual meet record of 3-3 while the men are undefeated at 4-0. The season will culminate with the MIAC Championships at the University of Minnesota February 12-14.
