Concordia stops women's basketball in MIAC opener
December 1, 2003
Two days after Thanksgiving, the Ole women traveled to Moorhead for their first conference game of the season. The team tried to catch up to the Cobbers, who led the whole game, but the Oles fell 71-49 in MIAC conference action on Saturday, November 29.
Jill Johnson (Sr, Butterfield, Minn.) led all scorers in the contest with 20 points, but the Oles struggled from the field, shooting only 27%. Kelly Sweeney (Sr, Oakdale, Minn.) was the top Ole rebounder with nine boards. Molly Simon played a solid game dishing five assists and grabbing five boards.
Concordia got off to a quick start, and the Oles pulled to within six. Concordia went on another run, taking a 32-19 lead at halftime. Throughout much of the second half the scoring remained even, and a jumper by Holly Grimsrud (FY, Zumbrota, Minn.) with less than seven minutes in the game, pulled the Oles within nine points. Although the Oles bounced back and out-rebounded Concordia in the second half, the Cobbers strong shooting and presence in the paint proved too much for the St. Olaf women, as the final score was 71-49.
Next up for the women's team is a conference game against Saint Mary's in Winona, Minn. on Saturday, December 6th at 1:00 p.m.
