Womens hoops, four points away from upset
December 9, 2003
The Oles travelled to Gustavus for their third conference game on Monday, December 8th. Although they put up a tough fight, the Oles came up short, losing 70-74.
Gustavus led by ten points over halfway through the first half, but Molly Simon's (Jr. Hudson, WI) three-pointer with 37 seconds left put the Oles within three at the break 43-40. Less than four minutes into the second half, a lay up by Simon put the Oles on top. With less than ten minutes to go, the Gusties regained the lead, but a jumper by Jill Johnson (Sr. Butterfield, Minn) with nine seconds left brought the Oles back within three. However, Gustie Kate Sandvig hit a freethrow at :06 to put the final score at 70-74.
The Oles outrebounded the Gusties 40-36 and drastically improved their shooting, hitting almost 50 percent of their shots, while the Gusties shot just 40 percent. For the first time this season, they had four players in double figures. Molly Simon led the team with 19 points, Jill Johnson had 17 points and eight rebounds, Sarah McBroom (Sr. Mora, MN) had 15 points and three assists, and Kelly Sweeney (Sr. Oakdale, MN) had a solid all-around game with ten points, six assists, and seven rebounds. Christine Schwictenberg (So. Hopkins, Minn) also grabbed eight boards.
The Oles face crosstown rival Carleton at 6:00 pm Wednesday, December 10 at Skoglund Arena.
